Artificial

Natural.. I saw this and had to have it. I could tell by the pics that his camera didn't quite capture all the colors and knew it would look better in hand. Which it does.

Looks like a veggie turkey to me! And you will be a turkey if you pay big bucks for this as a coin with "monster toning."

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Ah, good old amber, neon pink, and electric blue.. the toning on both coins is intentional, IMO

  • No. Didn't pay a premium at all for it. I've seen plenty of them that are offered at $50 on up. Even saw one for a little over $100. Didn't pay anywhere near that and never would. I checked all his other auctions and usually the people who are pushing the "monster toning" have a lot of other toned coins as well. I don't think it's artificially toned but I have to admit, they're getting pretty good at it. Unfortunately.

If someone is going to artificially tone one, they help but do it again. They both look AT. That electric current nonsense they are doing.
  • Grade that with a Geiger counter!

  • At the very least, I will be stuffed. Here's a couple other pics with no adjustments on the camera for your evening amusement.

They are both AT.....many techniques, different results....and the doctors are still innovating...Cheers, RickO

The first one is silly AT. The second, better AT.

Looks like a patch of hairlines in the field above the date….no higher than PF64
  • Evidently I haven't kept up close enough on the techniques and outcomes. I thought it was a pretty sure bet by the "worm tracking" around the bottom of the bell. I've watched all the how to vids on yt and such and the ones on eb that are from sellers that only sell AT coins and hadn't seen any with those types of marks in the toning. Could have already had some toning and it was "enhanced artificial toning"?? Oh crap... what a horrible thought to think that someone could take a beautiful, naturally toned coin that's spent decades or longer getting to where it is and have it ruined in an instant.

  • If anyone has time while digesting a belly full of turkey day stuff, take some time and check this site out before you nap. When I saw the name of the site (Jhon E. Cash), I was instantly leery of the site. Expected it to be like a poor pawn shop kind of site with a "come on down" pitch, but in giving it a quick go through to see if it's worth more time, I think it is. There's a ton of info on here and seems to be legit. But, I also thought my ben was too. image

Horribly AT....Not attractive at all. The things some people will do and for what? Just to ruin a what would have been a nice couple of coins.image

Even if it were natural, I prefer Mint State without

That often is indicative of a liquid having been applied.

The abrupt color changes on the obv are another clue that a liquid may have been involved.

IIRC, Brandon Kelley (aka poorguy) set up that website after Anaconda Rare Coins closed. He has since left Jhon E Cash and has his own website, "the best of yesterday" or something like that.

I watched a youtube with a guy, a battery, 2 pieces of wire, bowl of water, a 1 oz silver bar. That first coin, that is exactly the same blue/purple (I'm partially color blind, so lets just say blue) that was on the bar in the video. The moment I scrolled down and saw that color, I immediately knew that's how this guy toned the first one. The second, was a bit more subtle, but still has that 'electric blue'. Both have had that same 'electric current' treatment to get them to tone like this. Melt max, though on ebay, that's where you sell THESE coins for a lot more than they are worth. There are tons of people who have bought coins like this for huge premiums.
    I'll come up with something.
