This coin is graded ms67RD by pcgs (not that this is the question)

What causes all the bumps on the coin? I thought electrotype coins have looks like this.

Very common on Zincolns. The copper plating does not adhere properly to the zinc core, and bubbles form.

...probably the copper reacting with the zinc under neath.

The Mint facilities did a poor job of scheduling the application of the copper plating to the 95% zinc core of the raw sheet stock. Even a brief period of exposure of the zinc core to an uncontrolled atmosphere created a barrier to nominal bonding to the copper plating.

  • that's a shame for a tough coin. Beyond hope, not a 67 and one of the many reasons I do not collect copper coins ( i am aware there is less of a % of content copper in the modern penny then classic coin silver but the top part is pure).

I have several examples of 2010 shield cents with extreme planchet bubbles, I think they are kinda cool ....
  • Along with improper bonding, when a die gets hot that heat is transferred to the coin. With this transfer of heat a reaction is caused, that reaction can have an off gassing effect which could cause the bubbles to form as a pressure distortion.
Hope this helps. (was this a proper enough response?)

This is found on many of the modern cents..... I say many, by that I mean it is not uncommon, but by no means prevalent. Cheers, RickO

The only time I would be concerned is if the bubble is broken, and the zinc is showing. Zinc is very reactive to the air, and the coin could rot from within.

    More than likely.

The top 3 bane of new money
    Was
    Hits
    Blisters
    Spots

    Maybe in last 5-10 years
    Hits
    Spots
    Blisters

The real killer lately is the spotting, so in the last few years, maybe 1&2 are tied.
