OK, I was at Heritage today re-viewing the Newman lots and finalizing the CRO bidding strategy.
Without revealing any highly secretive information (or mentioning coffee again), I will say that I looooved some coins, and really, really did not care for some others, irrespective of holder grades, CAC status, and where they were positioned in the catalog.
In other words, it appears to me to be a complete and utter crapshoot during which it will be possible to make an astute purchase causing a spontaneous eruption of celebratory high fives from other bidders, or to make a mistake which will be the numismatic equivalent of being run over by a steam roller in a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

I have a feeling that any research done on pricing history or other "trends" for these coins will all go out the window. If you want it, you basically will have to keep bidding.

I looked at the Heritage Catalogue of the collection. Based on what I collect, I did not find one single coin which I thought was attractive for the grade. The experience reminded me of the I don't know how many Barber Halves in MS 65 holders I had to view before I found one that I liked and bought for my collection.

I browsed HA.com and saw many of the Newman coins. All though I do not collect any bust halves, babers, or any other classic coinage yet, I see many from the Newman collection I'd love to own. Of course I'd have to hit the lotto first lol. I saw some franklins from his collection but they totally are not my style . For those that will be going after those classic examples I wish you luck as I'm sure the bidding is gonna be fierce! Anyone know the auction closing date(s)?
NGC didn't do the collection, the pedigree, itself, or collectors any favors in not being more discriminating with the grades. It's like Reiver all over again.

I am hoping for the former.
