Cleaned, retoned. Even the reverse looks off.
  • This coin looks familiar image

    What happened to it?

Lost - I would strip it (soak it in Coca Cola -not diet) and then recolor with Dellers Darkener. It would look better than now.

Why in the world would you soak a coin in egg yolks? image and I certainly wouldn't consider those results "nice". You just damaged it further.

  • egg yolks contain sulfur which oxidizes copper and other metals, that is the basis for most treatments that are used to retone coins. That is why you use cooked hot egg yolks, crush them up while hot and put the coin or other metal you want to give an aged look to in the container and seal it. this was discussed in another thread my a senior member.

Why did you delete your opening post? I'm guessing you didn't like what people were saying about your coin. Sounds like it could have been educational. I guess in the future when you ask about a coin we'll have to use the quote feature to document it before you get a chance to delete it.

  • sorry I will repost the pics etc if you like. What people said did not bother me it was there opinions and that is what I asked for. The question was answered and I did not want to waste anyones time would you like me to put the pics back?

Ah.. and you guessed I was hiding the darn coin from an auction.
Why do you criticize others for what they feel to do on their thread; assuming it isn't against the rules?

I suggest you mind your own business future wise.

Because it is poor form. Perhaps someone else would have had valuable input or perhaps someone else would have learned from it, too.

I guess our new breed of forumites is interested in getting their questions answered for themselves only and then shutting down the conversation. Seems rather selfish to me. Never was like this before.

  • If you want to put it like that, RYK, that's fine.

But, that wasn't really the case. I don't think anyone should be addressed as Perryhall addressed him.
Especially with crappy assumptions to tick someone else off.

It's a bad case of bitterness perryhall has. To comment on every deleted post, with his "guess" on why it was deleted. Don't tell me that's proper form.

There's two sides to the story. If you want to blame it on posters being fairly new, that's fine with me. Whatever floats your boat.OK.
  • here are the images again the reason I deleated the thread and stated it was answered is because othe forums I have tryed out that I did not like because of the people on it who would rather demean people openly instead of sending a private msg would always complain that once an answer was given to post that it was given so as not to waste peoples time (lincolncentre******). For any future issues that you have with me PM me and ask it's not like I can bite you. There is no need to attack people when we are all having a plesant conversation and learnig new things every day. No matter how much you know you will never know everything.....

    The rest makes sense now.
Thanks for putting the pic back.
Now I need to brush up on egg yolk, Coke Classic & Dellers Darkener.

  • The same as using a sulfur reagent/chemical solution. I use it in making some of my jewelry. The egg yolks are gentler way to do so especially for those that have sensitive skin. As a side not sulfur is good for the brain. Now how does this coin look? image

the highly skilled coin doctors do not reveal their secrets on public forums unless they want to come clean, but I've never heard of that happening.

the obverse of the first coin is especially indicative of crude AT work.

Not sure if it works on other metals other than silver.

  • what happens to a coin that has been in a sulfur impregnated envelope? it tones it colors it oxidizes what ever you want to call it. so the sulfur in the egg yolks works but it is not instant it takes days...

  • now see we were having some fun? whats wrong? Does this look worse than the first pics because this was done based on the suggestions of other members. this coin is staying with us so no worries. there are times when toy want a coin for your own book but it has been cleaned whized etc so what do you do especially if its cheap. This coin was only $17.00 not like it broke the bank. My son has some badly cleaned coins from a friend in england and he still wants them for his book of british coins but wants those to look better also so why not talk about it, get a consensuses of what looks best and then he can do the same to the coins he is keeping. This is not about value but about the actual joy of owning a coin you like.

Pic posted above,,,,,looks best. Is it your lighting that changes the look of the coin? I know it's a cleaned
example but the pic above looks best as far as all the pics you posted of this coin.
A good pic will tell most of the story for the majority of those here on the forum. And that's the best so far.

It may look a bit more silver than copper but it's still the best.

Might try experimenting with your lighting, John.

I find incandescents work best on copper but are horrible on silver.

  • how am I doing it wrong I say thank you when people answer questions and that does add to my post total significantly I havent started over 300 threads. I have even asked that when people have something non coin related to the post to PM me but people don't get it so when people leave a comment I need to answer that question just as any other member has that I have seen while reading the many posts. So what is wrong with that?

but what will still raise eyebrows is difference in the reverse and obverse coloring contrasts. there is a larger contrast on the reverse than the obverse which would still make it suspect to the discerning eye.

I would and wouldn't worry about the complaints.

they are just saying listen more in a not so good way.

I used to post a lot more when I came on and some accused me of doing it simply to get a higher post count and some false sense of credibility. image

As to the digging holes type coments... I think they may be referring to the sulfur envelope vs. eggs post. immersing it in egg is a faster and harsher chemical soup process than an out gassing old envelope. There is a difference.

  • Thank you Bob for keeping your response on the coin and thank you for your response (I am not supposed to say that because I am posting wrong(meatwad))! I have changed my lights I got rid of the L.E.D.s because they are just nasty for me for some reason. I am using a True light incandescent system with a time delayed flash and they are getting better. Part of me posting my coin pics is to get an opinion on how they look as that is important to any sales or questions about type, VAMS or errors as well as condition. My goal is for the coin to actually look like the coin in hand without having to edit the pic. As for the questions about retoning here is my sons coin. Lets keep this post informative and just maybe we can all lears something. As a new member I do feel that some of the long time members are very against the new people and harass them, this helps no one!!!! Also as a new member I am reading a lot of past posts but there is no way for me to read them all and I may ask questions that have been asked befor but that is what being new to something is about. When I had people working for me when I had my own business the people who did not ask questions were the ones I worried about. I always answer a question if I have the answer and feel it is right to do so. This is just my opinion so like it or not there it is.......

  • do not use raw egg yolks they need to be hard boiled and the coin or other item you are aging should never come in contact with the yolk ever because it will damage the surface of what ever metal you are working with. I use Metal clay alot for sculpting ans after Have to get a patina and this is just one way to do so it is the off gassing of the hot hard boiled yolk that does the work.

  • IMHO, I would never try and alter the natural aging process. That would be like trying to talk your wife into a boob job. You would only lose in the end. image

  • fade to black I sent you a private msg and asked you to PM concerning things other than what the post is about. I see this is to hard for you to understand. You at one point in your now Omnipotent knowledge base needed to ask questions. You are also saying people who do not have as much knowledge as you are not welcome here and that is very sad that you say such things. Then you make a veiled threat about the moderators and that is very inappropriate and you your self need to understand yes it is a privilege to post here. Why do you feel it is your job to dissuade me from posting and replying on this forum, are you the head moderator and owner of the board? Quit being nasty and putting it in posts where it does not belong.
