    Possibly the S3?

All letters of LIBERTY are visible, but not plain, and the band below LIBERTY is not distinct, so I believe that makes it technically F-12.
But the layer of gunk on the NE is a problem.
  • yep I thought so also but I dont want to remove it. Also the date reminds me of some other over dates in the series and in the morgans any idea about the 8 and 6?

The repunching on the 8 6 and 1 match the S3 description. Is that what you are asking?
  • yes I was trying to figure out which one it was as there are 6 listed on PCGS and I was trying to figure a value for this coin. Is 100 to 150 about right ?

I see the PCGS Price Guide has $185 for the S3 F-12 (problem free).
So your estimate under that is likely appropriate.
I'm not familiar with this market myself (circulated RPDs), or how to discount it for the problems.
    Others here may know more.

I'd say the problems are significant. A much larger reduction in value is in order.

Nice catch, perhaps a variety collector would pay a premium, but the coin itself has other issues. Is the reverse in similar condition? Cheers, RickO
  • Nope the back is good which is why I was considering having the gunk on the rim removed but it appears to be metal I will have to test it

I found one of these 1864-L double punched date varieties when I was in high school. The first three digits of the date were noticeably doubled. I got excited about that, but unfortunately the coin was uniformly corroded to an even green color, despite the fact that it had EF sharpness. The coin was listed in Frank Spidone's (sp) "Oddity and Variety Guide." Do any of you old timers remember that one?

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
