From what I understand, counterfeit US Collector coins are a product in China while counterfeiting or using counterfeit Chinese money warrants the death penalty.

So, no, I don't believe that the Chinese spend counterfeits of their own coins.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

It's legal to create replicas of any coin dated prior to 1949 in China. The current government and currency system was established in 1949 so nothing prior to that is legal tender in China. I guess they didn't care about any coins prior to 1949 since none are legal tender for transactions and did not consider collectors at the time. What we have now is a consequence of that.

  • Sounds like we need to reevaluate our punishments for counterfeiting. Well, can't do that I guess, Ebay would go broke with all the lost revenue. image Can't have that.

No. Counterfeit coins, poison dog food, poison drywall, etc. are for export only.

From what I have read the counterfeit problem is so bad in China that the banks will not take coins, which includes the new U.S. dollars. I've read that the economy has more than a few them in circulation.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
