<< <i>For future reference, take another look at the two dates shown above. Notice how the base of the 2 for the 1923 is noticeably flared, while the base of the 2 for the 1928 is mostly straight. The e-bay image shows a noticeably flared base of the 2. Definitely a 1923. Sorry. I think the seller scored. >>
After some research I now tend to agree that it's a not so skilled seller. BUT-
In the interest of playing devil's advocate, here's a thought... If I had a nothing-happening 1923 Peace dollar and saw all the listings for that date, most of which were far nicer than mine... Knowing mine was subpar- BUT, also knowing that cherrypickers are always looking to capitalize on others' mistakes... ...why not put up some soft-focus pics to make people think I might have accidentally typoed the date and it could be a '28? If I put 1923 in the auction, they can't easily file a SNAD claim as they got what was advertised, right? It's going to be hard to use "buyer protection" to bail them out of overpaying for something that was properly described, yes?
I think a bit of trickery was at work here, but the coin is a 1923 as described.
I posted a 1911 Gold Quarter Eagle here a couple weeks ago. Looked like it had a D mint mark. (or was it a shadow) It was advertised as a 1911 but got $150 extra because some saw the D.
The seller asked to cancel my purchase and refund my money and I agreed. All ends well the seller was a very decent individual.
RACC I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then question the manner in which I provide it. I prefer you said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand to post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

Hold on... the seller asked you to cancel a purchase where he got 2.5x more money than he should have? Are you sure that didn't work the other way around? Did you contact him after the auction and ask him about the actual date on the coin?

Yeah , don't you know most ebay sellers will ask to cancel if they feel the bidding was in their favor ... sure they do.
I bet it was actually a '23 and the seller was attempting trickery. He got busted and felt that he would do the right thing and return the money instead of facing the music with a ebay/paypal dispute.
TTT. I'd still like to know why the seller made his generous offer to cancel a sale where he got at least twice book value for a common silver dollar. Was he informed that the coin was coming back for a refund if he did ship it?

Perhaps the OP counted his chickens before they arrived... Somebody might have messaged the seller and told him to take a second look- and if in fact a 1928 to either relist as such or they would double the purchase price.
1. Either the seller realized it was a 28, listed it in error, and cancelled the sale since he left money on the table. (bad)
2. He is a member here or reads the boards, listed it with decieving photos, and knows he is in hot water. (bad/good, depending on his photographic intentions)
3. He knows the coin sold for too much and looking at his photos, feared negative feedback retaliation. (good)
4. OP did not give complete details of sale cancellation. (no offense OP, just a possible scenario.)
<< <i>The seller asked to cancel my purchase and refund my money and I agreed. All ends well the seller was a very decent individual. >>
OK for clarification purposes. I received an email from eBay with the link in the email indicating that the seller wanted to know if I would like to cancel. I said yes. So I guess it was my decision but he initiated it.

The 1928 is sometimes mistakenly called a 1923 by the grading services and is hard to detect if pictures are not very good. Both the coins I showed pictures of previously were actually 1928 and not 1923 as listed on the holder. Here is another example of a 1928 called a 1923 by ICG.

I agree with this. Why would anyone want to discuss a possible "score" before even receiving the coin in hand?
I think someone was convinced it's a 1928 and offered more money off-eBay. There was little motive to cancel based on this thread. The coin was listed as a '23, and after some examination we (majority) determined it was a '23. I don't see any glaring posts here which suggest the seller could get better money by re-listing.
Basically, don't blame the forum for blowing the deal. IMO.
