<< <i>I am probably in the minority on this one but I think it is pretty cool how they (Reed) is telling everyone that they almost put a $100K deal together today but 50 cases of 1987 derailed the deal. I actually appreciate and like hearing information like this. I have had three deals with Steve on trading some heavy product between us within the last three months and he passed on a couple of items that we offered him because he had too much of it. Like most dealers they want to get the stuff that moves quickly and stuff that won't take up a three car garage for 10 years for storage. I understand completely.

We all love the find stories, it's the tone. Blaming the seller, calling him as much an idiot. here's how the post might be properly written.

"Hey guys. We were THIS CLOSE to terms on a monster deal today. Only problem: a menacing wall of 50 1987 Topps BB cases got in the way. Sometimes you beat the junk wax, sometimes it beats you. We'll keep looking hard for you as always!"

I don't believe that Reed's detractors are jealous of him - if they were jealous of anyone it would be Steve, and nobody writes these things about him. However, some of us might be worried that the inevitable Reed major f'up down the line will tarnish or irreparably damage BBCE's credibility - and by (selfish) extension the value of our own collections and the unopened market as a whole. I'm guessing that those who don't see his actions as a big deal haven't had to deal with problem employees in the past. These things are major red flags.

That said, I'm sure Steve gets a chuckle out of all of this ZOMG AMAZE free business advice offered to him on these boards. What a resource! image

Again, you don't know it was Reed who wrote that.

One of the things I like most about BBCE is their honesty, and no-nonsense posts like that one only increases my support for their business.

    Sayings

A fool and his money are soon parted

Stupid people spend their money carelessly and soon become poor.

A good name is better than riches

Your good reputation is worth more than money.

A good payer is master of another's purse

Someone who is known to always pay exactly as promised can borrow money from other people at any time.

A good paymaster never wants workmen

An employer who pays well is never short of staff.

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise

It is good for us to sleep early in the evening and wake early in the morning.

He who pays the piper calls the tune

The person who pays a musician can decide what music he wants to hear. And the person who pays for any service has the right to say exactly what he wants.

    Health is better than wealth

Being free from illness is better than being rich.

If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys

An employer who pays low wages will have bad staff.

    Money doesn't grow on trees

It's not easy to get money. We have to work hard to make money. We can't just walk around and pick it like fruit from the trees.

Money is a good servant, but a bad master

If you have money, it will serve you and work for you well. But if you owe money to other people, that money will control you in an unpleasant way.

Money is the root of all evil

According to this saying, all immorality and wickedness is caused by money. This saying is a misquotation, and the original version ("the love of money is the root of all evil") implies that all immorality and wickedness is caused by people loving money, not by money itself.

    Money isn't everything

There are other important things in this world, not just money.

    Money makes money

If you have money, you can use it to get more money through investment.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be

Do not borrow things. Do not lend things.

Pay beforehand was never well served

If you pay for a service before you receive it, you will not get good service.

    Riches have wings

Money can disappear easily. Money is like a bird with wings: it can fly away if you are not careful.

The best things in life are free

We don't have to pay for the things that are really valuable, like love, friendship and good health.

The rich knows not who is his friend

When you have money, you don't know if people are friendly with you because they like you, or because they like your money. The structure of this saying is difficult. In normal English it would be something like: "Rich people do not know who their friends are."

    Where there's muck there's brass

There is money to be made in dirt and dirty jobs. For example, many people have made fortunes by processing rubbish or waste materials.

You can't take it with you when you die

When we die we leave everything on earth. We don't take anything with us. Even the richest people cannot take their money with them after death. This proverb reminds us that some material or worldly things are not really so valuable as we may think.

Much of what I feel has already been said by other members. I'll only add this

Reed seems be a solid employee and negotiator but it's clear this dog needs a leash as the one thing he's doing wrong is PR&marketing.

With the kind of business that Steve has, I'm sure he can afford to get himself someone who isn't arrogant (and insecure for that matter) on every post, email, and conversation. An intern with a college education can handle tweets, posts, emails, etc better than him.

If he continues to let Reed control this piece of his business, I would have to assume its for the wrong reasons since nothing positive can come out of consistently childish responses.

I remember buying a new 1987 Topps Wax Box for $15 at the local card store. What a fun rip! The RC selection was fantastic, and it only got better in 88 and 89 when some unknown RC's began hitting (e.g. Greenwell, K. Mitchell). And $15 was about two weeks alllowance saved up, so I wasn't breaking the bank.

Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

My thought as well. I don't see any arrogance in that post.

What is interesting is they lost this wax that they feel is legit, wax that is now going to hit the market via some other seller that this board will then be suspicious about.....because you can only trust BBCE wax.

Not at all, just making an observation using CU lingo. I understand why some people are put off by Reed's tone but believe most of those expressing fauxrage, just because they can, aren't even customers.

edited and replaced correct employee's name. sorry for the confusion.

This forum has come together for many noble causes. Maybe the mancrushers can come together and have a "Save the Authentic Wax" fundraiser for BBCE. We just need 50 people to commit to buying a 1987 Topps wax case at a special CU member price. For the less affluent members of the forum sportscardtheory could organize a box or pack rip. For goodness sake people don't let this deal go to Dave & Adams.

Do I win a prize Tim? If I do it better not be a 1975 Ron Blomberg Mini Card!

"Mad as a hatter" is a colloquial phrase used in conversation to refer to a crazy person. In 18th and 19th century England mercury was used in the production of felt, which was used in the manufacturing of hats common of the time. People who worked in these hat factories were exposed daily to trace amounts of the metal, which accumulated within their bodies over time, causing some workers to develop dementia caused by mercury poisoning (called mad hatter syndrome). Mercury was also placed in the linings of hats at the time for comfort..so people who wore the hats for long periods would also absorb the mercury and develop the symptoms. Thus, the phrase became popular as a way to refer to someone who was perceived as insane.

I don't think people are angry at Brent for his tone. They are angry at him because he did not identify a Brown Old Mill back. But maybe someone should start a separate thread about that! I am sure it will have its own source of Mad Hatters and Man Crushers!

Haywood swings and crushes one towards South America. Tomlinson's gonna need a visa to catch this one. It is outta here, and there's nothing left but a vapor trail.
