Keep posting! This is one hell of a challenge and hopefully you not only help people save, but maybe get one of them to be a collector as well
Im joining the challenge but mine will be slightly different because some coins such as dollar and half dollar coins are nearly non-existent here in my overseas military post. I will, however, substitute the dollar coins with bills if i cant find any and the 50 cent pieces will be substituted with quarters. I had tons of change just laying around so I will instead start quite a few weeks ahead of time and instead of finishing by Sept next year Ill be finished by late July.
This coming week Ill be starting on week 9
My goal???
A mint state (perhaps MS 62, maybe a 63 if Im lucky) 1955 Double Die penny which I should be able to buy for about $2600
<< <i>Thank you all for your support, rodzm, It's good to have you on board. You mentioned military post, are you serving? Where are you at? >>

Ill be watching your giveaway and will throw my guess some time. Im starting on week 9 already. Had to go to the bank to get more coins and the teller had $20 in dollar coins (Sacs unfortunately), she was very happy for me to take them off her hand.
<< <i>great idea to save! What will you do with the money? I think I'm going to do something like this too! >>
Thanks for the question, I am going to use the $$ on a vacation to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. We are currently planning a trip to Vegas but that might change between now and then.
Well maybe the challenge is to do it week by week but every day Ive just been searching all over for change that I have and have managed to complete this weeks and next weeks ahead of schedule. I didnt know I had so much change just laying around collecting dust. I started last week and am now 9 weeks ahead of schedule. There is no dollar coins left so Ill see if the bank has some more, if not then Ill have to settle for bills instead. I think from now on its going to get a bit tougher since change is drying out around the house. Ill probably end up cashing my Euro change which i dont use anyways and will cash it for dollars.
Todays coins put me at week 10, next Sunday Ill be adding coins for week 11. Tally so far in coins is $105.05, all from change in a week's time

Holy smokes, $105.05 in change sitting around the house in Germany... now that's impressive...lol. Do they still use Pogs over there?

Change accumulates easy over here especially Euros since they actually have 1 cent, 2 cent, 5 cent, 10 cent, 20 cent, 50 cent, 1 Euro and 2 Euro coins. So needless to say Ill be cashing those as well for the challenge. As far as pogs...well havent seen those since about 2003 when I deployed to Iraq. I believe AAFES did away with the damn things after a few years.
Yes amazing how much change I had laying around. I know I have a few boxes of pennies from 2009 sitting in the basement and some dollar coins. Just have get the courage of getting it without having the boxes attacking me (basement is kind of messy)

You have the unique opportunity to do this with Euros too What's the exchange rate? When I was over there we had Phennings and marks
One more thing rodzm, be sure to keep track of your time left over there and have an escape route to get out from under all those coins. My local bank takes only rolled coins (No charge) and they give coin rolls free (Bank of America) not sure if you have the same opportunities but it might be a good idea to start asking for the rolls now (You know a few every week) so when you do need to turn in the coins you have the rolls on hand.
So it was my birthday in Friday and i got some Euros Form friends and family. It is extra money so i will put this towards the challenge. Should be roughly230-240 dollars which will put me way ahead oft schedule. Will still even Marke my weekly contributions so it will put me Fürther ahead
So I got a very nice gift in the way of money from family and friends. A total of 210 Euros plus a co-worker owed me 25 Euros from a while back so I just threw it into the piggy. The conversion to dollars came out to $311.75
The added totals actually put me way out to week 23. I know it may not be a weekly challenge but any extra cash i get I may as well add it towards my challenge. Ill be back on track for my single weekly additions starting next week so it should be slower from now on. My grand total so far is $527.16
Dollar coins are exhausted at my bank so i have to rely on bills and coins. Even coins (believe it or not) are kind of limited here overseas as much of the coin that banks have are small amounts that circulate only within local businesses. Here is the latest in pictures...
Wow, nice! You put together over $500 USD in about 2 weeks that you didn't know you had... Great job.
Back when I was over there, the PX used POGS. They said it costs to much to ship coins (Weight and security I guess). I still have a nice collection from deployment.
Great job, keep it up and you will reach your goal in no time.
<< <i>Frankly, I don't understand why you are putting effort into this.
Why don't you just open a savings account and automatically deposit $50 a week into it?
Seems like you would be better off using the time you would have devoted to this project to do something more productive...perhaps even earning an extra $50 a week... >>
The OP has a fantastic idea, and I wish his full success at the end of a years time. Saving is a lost idea in America, in general, but I think a lot more people are seeing why it is so important.
Last year, I sold almost all of my coin collection to make a principle payment on my house. In September, I decided to save $1000 a month, and will be totally debt free at the end of next July, Lord willing .
DNA Dave, thanks for your support. I am enjoying the adventure. So far I basically had one "outing" where I was searching for coins, other than that I had the coins on hand or get them in every day commerce. I have enough for a few more weeks but then I'm off for another outing to find more dollar coins.
So pay day is on Tuesday for me so since my next challenge deposit is this I decided to do it a couple of days earlier. My deposit was $45.84 bringing my new total to $573. This will be week 24 for me so Im closing in on my halfway point of the challenge. I went to the bank to try and get some quarters but the tellers didnt have any rolls of quarters. Im thinking that I may be drying out their supply. For now Ill have to use bills to provide change using the existing coins that I have
^^^^^ Nice stack...thats gonna be one heavy bucket. On a side note my small bucket is getting to the brim however with the local shortage of coins I believe I may have enough change for a while to switch between bills and coins, hopefully limiting the amount of coins I will eventually have to dump.
<< <i>^^^^^ Nice stack...thats gonna be one heavy bucket. Ya, I'm guessing a few hundred pounds I can't wait. I may have to cut the container open to get the coins out if I can't lift it or at least knock it over to get the coins out when I am done...lol. I have a give away set up to guess the final weight (I will be doing more giveaways in the near future, watch the signature line link).

Maybe you should change the name to, "Contribution Challenge", you are building waaaay to fast...lol. Seriously though, great job.
I find it amazing that the bank did not have any rolls of Quarters. Did you go to a bank on a base? (Do they still call them Kaserns?)
Theyre still called Kasernes. But yeah the coins here on post are limited because not much is used except for the few businesses on post and since most people use their cards anyways they see a limited use of coins. I would have to say that pennies are even more limited especially at the commissaries. They are now doing penny rounding whnever you pay with a card.
Even though Ive been accumulating fairly fast It will be slow from now on except when I receive any unexpected and unnacounted money. As it stands Im on target to finish om 27 April 2014
So my next deposit is scheduled for 20 October which is 3 days from now so iwent ahead and didt today anyways. Brings my total so far to$620.75. Coins inside the container are beginning to decrease and be replaced by bills because of the local shortage of coins.
So far this has been pretty easy, as I said before I am going to try to do this in order. I was thinking about what I would do if I did not have dollar coins available and I decided that I would put the extra cash in an envelope until I can find the coins. That said, I am good for a few more weeks with the last dollar pick up that I got a few weeks ago.
I did not end up picking up the dollar coins this past week so I am still on the look out for some more.
Well today I decided to clean out the basement and remembered that I bought throughout the last few years several mint rolls and quarter bags which I thought at the time may have a decent secondary market increase but bottom line is that they are cash and they have very limited upside in appreciation. So I went and took all the bags and rolls i had and now theyre going towards my weekly deposits. I am currently on week 25 but with this it ctually puts me way ahead to week 34. Nice pile of coins and cash...great mix of stuff.
First pic is this weeks deposits starting from right to left are:
Amazing how it builds so fast. Thanks for sharing the pics. I did the same thing awhile ago with my "State Quarters" that were going to give me a return...lol. I did get a return... .25 cents each.
I decided to also collect enough paper rolls to roll all the coins so when it is time to cash in, I am not looking around for rolls. This should save some time at the end and add to the fun now. I can get them free at my local BoA but they don't like to give more than a few at a time because they figure people have only a roll or two of coins sitting around. That said, they know me from bringing in my change every year (Usually a few hundred dollars worth) and they give me about 10 of each when I ask (Cent, Nickle, Dime and quarter) I am going to have to find another source for the halves and dollar coins.
<< <i>Cool stuff. That half dollar on top just to the northeast of center looks like a 40 or 90%. I'm sure it's been checked though..... >>
Wes, I checked them before they went in. The rolls I got were marked by a roll searcher (A black line down the side of the roll) so I don't expect to find any silver.... but I still look
I on the other hand missed my 27 October contribution because I was on vacation in a remote cabin. Once the bank opens tomorrow I will be making the 27 October, 3 November and 10 November contributions at once (3 because payday was on the first). Once the 17th comes around I will do that with the midmont paycheck but will bring my overall totals from the current $1,136.45 to $1,342.73
I just realized I missed last weeks contribution, so here it is.
I found that my local bank had some dollar coins so I picked up $100 to keep me safe for the next few weeks. This was the first time that I found circulated dollars. The mix contained 74 presidential dollars, 24 Sacagawea dollars and 2 Susan B. Anthony's, so I will be adding them to the jar over the next few weeks. I talked to a guy about getting some of the older large dollars so I think I am going to work on getting them next.
Yesterday was deposit for weeks 42 and 43 of $80.22 and $82.13 respectively. I started September 22 so Ive managed to put a very nice dent into the pot due to birthday money, etc. My noew total now stands at $1,806.86. Nothing exciting over the last few weeks due to a limited amount of coins at my bank and also because i really want to keep the hassle with coins to a minimum. I have amassed quite a bit of coins and being that Im so close to the goal I dont want to take on another headache. I have changed my startegy from making deposits every week to every two weeks to match each paycheck. At this rate my final deposit will be on February 14th but may be sooner if i end up getting some Christmas cash. All in all a total of 9 deposits to go or a total of 5 paychecks.
Im now faced with a different dillemma. I was going to spend the cash on a 1955 Double Die but Im enetertaining the notion of acquiring a well known error (any US coin) for the budget of around $2,600 or less). Ive been considering a 3 legged Buffalo, the 1955 Double Die cent , 1972 Double Die cent. Perhaps some of the folks here can chime in on some well known and popular error coins to be had. I must say though that they must be something impressive and something that really pops out at you.

I must say though that they must be something impressive and something that really pops out at you.
