replica or clad bullion no longer allowed on ebay

derrybderryb Posts: 36,779 ✭✭✭✭✭
They agreed with my suggestion. Added to the bullion policy under coin and currency policy:

"Replica, plated, or clad bullion isn't allowed."

Note that this applies to the bullion category only.

    Thank you.

Lets see what we catch out there. Too me, its a deception since they would lead you to believe it has value equivalent as a pure PM.

If it were worded differently and presented clearly for what it is and its value, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
But then again, many mints offer this kind of stuff as well. If the customer is OK with it and the items have
personal appeal and collectibility value to them, then its fine.

It's about time....but I'm sure that "garbage" will find a home in the Exonumia category.

I should hope not, but I easily removed those listings in the past by adding "-German" to my search ... but I agree this makes things easier as a few "silver color" and "silver plate" listings always manage to creep into the results.

I just received this reply from ccw.

    Hi Jerry,

"It actually came about because of me. I am always pushing for changes to policy and just recently a new person in San Jose was put in charge of collectibles and she is quite receptive to my ideas. Besides banning clad/layered/replica bullion and bars, we will shortly be banning mini coins and requiring sellers of raw coins to show both sides of the coin. They are not now required to do so which I have always thought a very bad idea. After all these years someone is finally actually listening to me!"

    Sincerely,

    Judith

between her & me.....we have Nuked hundreds of "German Silver" bars & rounds that were listed in the silver bullion category. Now we'll be able to get rid of those listed in the bullion category.

And I recommended it to her a while back when I reported a lot of the clad products. Seems she's always the one that responds to my reported coin violations. I asked her to suggest the change to whomever need be. Ask her if was not recommended by ebay member goldbuyer1953. I'd be interested in her reply - it will determine if I make further recommendations. I'd show the message I sent but "report" messages aren't saved in a member's sent messages.

derryb, I know for a fact that, she's been trying to implement those changes for years, but it was not a "priority" with eBay's powers to be. I'm sure that your suggestion, along with numerous others, along with the change in management, finally got the ball rolling which implemented this change. Don't stop reporting irregularities, that's the only way to stop those scammers.

I also recently recommended a minimum five day listing period for coins, currency and stamps. Anything less is the counterfeiter's dream because he can list and make the sale before being reported. Let's see if Judith can push this one through.

Great idea...even a 3 days min. auction would help.

This is also exceedingly good news, if they can manage to enforce it. Good luck!

Latest communication from ccw regarding my inquiry when we can start reporting this garbage...

    Hi Jerry,

"I actually just got an update from San Jose and you can start reporting replica/plated/clad bullion, replica/plated/clad bars and mini coins now. They are all now banned.

Thanks for all your help Jerry."

I'd like to see them shut down the "grab bag" coin sellers.

    << <i>Even if it's clad in .9999 (That's four nines.) pure 24k gold? >>

clad is clad. bullion gold/silver is all gold/silver not just the surface. Many ebay sellers have been getting away with selling clad (or "100 mils") as the real McCoy. Some of it is not even marked as clad (or 100 mils) but can be found in the description.
