That seller made a nice investment a few years ago (assuming it is the original buyer in 2009). He is into his boxes at about $1,100. A much better return than the market over the same period.
Perhaps if a single box waas offered in an auction format we could see what the market really is, but to do it as a dutch auction I dont expect we'll see much action here.
The current market is being driven by perceived/actual scarcity. Where is the scarcity when 9 boxes of exactly the same thing are suddenly offered this way?
<< <i>Where is the scarcity when 9 boxes of exactly the same thing are suddenly offered this way? >>
That is true, but these 9 boxes, like the boxes Bob Beck sold Steve, are all from the same source--the Conlon collection that was auctioned off by REA several years back. Besides these boxes, you'd be hard pressed to find any others in quantity. When the REA mini wax cases sold back then, I was buying wax boxes for $800-$1000 per, but after all those were sold, the prices began to creep skyward once the reality set in that that was really all there was, in quantity, at least, and from an iron clad source, too.

It really depends on what you're looking at with those comparisons. Mini wax goes for for considerably less than regular 75 wax boxes, but mini cellos are usually sold at a higher premium because they are scarcer. When REA auctioned off the Conlon collection, there were about 18 mini wax cases compared to only about 3+ mini cello cases. As far as singles go, a PSA 9 mini Brett RC will command a premium over a PSA 9 regular size Brett card, and low pop mini commons in PSA 9 and 10 grades draw extremely strong prices, though there are certainly plenty of examples of regular 75s commanding strong prices, too. Both sets have their quirks and idiosyncracies.

The market for regular 1975s has not stood still during the past 18 months. The last wax box that BBCE broke last year was sold at $125/pack (that's $4500/box versus around $3000 18 months ago). For comparison 1975 mini wax recently hit a sales high of about $2200 (versus $1215 about 18 months ago).
As for cellos, other than the 2012 summer auction regular 1975 BB cello boxes have been reaching in the $3000/box range through Collect Auctions going back to April 2012:
April 11, 2013: Sports & Americana Auction 20 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box (24) $600.00 $2,991.66 OVER Nov. 29, 2012: Sports & Americana Auction 22 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box (24) $600.00 $3,236.22 OVER August 9, 2012: Sports & Americana Auction 89 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box $300.00 $2,386.80 OVER April 12, 2012: Sports & Americana Auction 56 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box $300.00 $2,888.73 OVER
That's up about 30% from an average of around $2200 from the year prior:
December 1, 2011: Sports & Americana Auction 74 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box (24) $400.00 $1,971.45 OVER August 11, 2011: Sports & Americana Auction 90 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box $600.00 $2,208.96 OVER April 7, 2011: Sports & Americana Auction 100 1975 Topps Baseball Unopened Cello Box (24) $400.00 $2,386.80 OVER
The recent BBCE sale of a 1975 mini cello box at $3000 is likely to drive the 1975 regular boxes somewhat higher, as they always seem to have commanded a premium over the minis. It would not surprise me to see the 1975 regular cellos move up another 20%-30% between now and the end of the year (unless a decent volume of supply suddenly appears).
Definitely noticed the "tenth" box was the one bought recently from BBCE (from the cellophane wrapping) in the last few weeks in hopes to catch a quick grand. Not a bad idea, but its putting out $3k that is difficult.
I think oftentimes these postings are of the "I don't really want to sell but can be compelled at a high enough price" variety. It's free to list, so there is no downside except potential seller's regret down the road. With eBay fees now a flat 10%, the sale of that box (I believe) jumped up an additional $250 or more in fees that need to be built into any sale. So while it looks like the seller is trying to clear a quick $1,000, he/she is really only trying to clear $500 at $3900.
That was the market price 18 months ago. 70s unopened has moved up between 70%-150% since then and the demand is still WAY higher than the supply.
In December 2011 BBCE was selling 1975 Mini Wax Boxes at $1215 ($1350 less 10% discount). The most recent one sold by BBCE went for $2300 a few weeks ago!
In late 2011 BBCE was selling 1973 Series 5 (Schmidt RC series) Wax Boxes at about $4400. They have been selling around $7200 on Collect Auctions for about a year now and the box in REA in May went for about $9600 with BP.
We can't escape the fundamentals of supply and demand.

The market for regular 1975s has not stood still during the past 18 months. The last wax box that BBCE broke last year was sold at $125/pack (that's $4500/box
versus around $3000 18 months ago).
April 11, 2013: Sports & Americana Auction 20 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box (24) $600.00 $2,991.66 OVER
Nov. 29, 2012: Sports & Americana Auction 22 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box (24) $600.00 $3,236.22 OVER
August 9, 2012: Sports & Americana Auction 89 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box $300.00 $2,386.80 OVER
April 12, 2012: Sports & Americana Auction 56 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box $300.00 $2,888.73 OVER
That's up about 30% from an average of around $2200 from the year prior:
December 1, 2011: Sports & Americana Auction 74 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box (24) $400.00 $1,971.45 OVER
August 11, 2011: Sports & Americana Auction 90 1975 Topps Baseball Cello Box $600.00 $2,208.96 OVER
April 7, 2011: Sports & Americana Auction 100 1975 Topps Baseball Unopened Cello Box (24) $400.00 $2,386.80 OVER
The recent BBCE sale of a 1975 mini cello box at $3000 is likely to drive the 1975 regular boxes somewhat higher, as they always seem to
have commanded a premium over the minis. It would not surprise me to see the 1975 regular cellos move up another 20%-30% between
now and the end of the year (unless a decent volume of supply suddenly appears).
