Looked like a endless see of junk wax and at $333 a thound this guy getting ripped off. Heck Kruck Cards would only pay him $72 for that collection looking at there web site ($6 per 5k for junk wax).

At least the cards are organized and neatly displayed. So he's got that going for him.

Just watched the video previews and agree. Looks like useful cautionary tales, but also disturbing.
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

Maybe its just me, but I dont see anything wrong with what he is collecting. If he never speaks to other people or leaves the house thats one thing, but just buying everything Van Slyke he can seems like a high percentage of this board (only if they are centered of course)

    Relatively unnkown player?

I was hoping for Rafeal Belliard.

Andy Van Slyke is making a strong case in the hobby as a near quasi semi-star.

After watching the video its definetly just a different spin on "Horders" and not a fun hobby show. I was impressed with his complete sheet collection though, I mean where does one acquire a 1990 Score sheet?
Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.

I got the vibe dude is still living at home, no? I imagine his parents would very much like to see him spend less on his collection and more on rent maybe?

    Snorto~

I'm not sure if it's so much that but the emotional issues that the guy obviously has. Dad leaving home when the guy was a kid and mom not knowing how to help her son deal with that loss seems to be the big culprit here. Likely why mom was crying in the preview.

That intervention guy is nuts asking him to burn a 1/1 autograph/jersey of Van Slyke. Some people just don't understand cards and collecting as a hobby. But I can agree that no one needs 60,000 cards of a player. I could understand 1 of every card, or maybe 9 of every card to fill a 9 pocket sheet. And there is nothing wrong with multiple signed pictures and jerseys.

The funniest part was when the intervention dude asked him to start selling his cards at the end. This shows he clearly knows nothing about collecting and the hobby. I don't think anyone is buying 500 count lots of 1989 Donruss Van Slyke cards on Ebay or anywhere.

Hardcore Hobbies would have been a pretty neat program if they interviewed really cool collections throughout the country. This episode left me feeling really sad for the card collector. On the other hand I wanted to slap the toy guy in his face for being so goofy and putting his family last in his life because of his hobby.
I know we all enjoy collecting cards but to tell your wife to cut down on the food bill so he can buy toys is sick IMO.
Looking for high grade rookie cards and unopened boxes/cases

I taped the episode last night and just watched it. He should have took that money from that guy to buy more Van Slyke cards after he left. Helping him destroy cards isn't going to help him, it's much deeper than that. I myself may have to collect Van Slyke cards now!!
  • Van Slyke was one of the most popular Pirates of the eighties. There are many supercollectors out there. He is just one of them. If he does have 500 count lots of 89 Donruss, they were likely bought back during the boom.
