Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Like disco, the late 70's are very over-rated. Sure, there may be a long lasting hit or two but otherwise, not so much.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
It's hard to be objective when nostalgia is in play. I started collecting heavily in 1973, and love every set from 1971-1980. Conversely, I think 1968 and 1969 are among the most boring and unattractive sets ever. Can't stand all those airbrushed hats
<< <i>It's hard to be objective when nostalgia is in play. >>
I have to agree wholeheartedly. 1968 is my favorite set and I'll be the first to concur that it's not visually one of the best.
Topps has far worse though. 1961 is incredibly boring, as is 1964. 1964 much more so. You have a small card to begin with, and then you choose to give up almost 25% of your space for team and player names? Stupid. 1957 and 1967 had it right. 1968 and 1969 for all their faults at least gave you a decent size picture.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the PSA 10 collector he didn't exist.
<< <i> For a modern set, I think the most over-hyped is 93 Finest. It included the 1st refractor....I get it. But it wasn't the 1st premium card. 91 Stadium Club was the game changer in terms of producing a really premium product and asking people to pay $5 a pack instead of $1. '93 Finest was just an extension of a movement that '91 Stadium Club created. If '91 Stadium Club had been produced in less quantity, I think it would be a highly sought after set even today. >>
No one said it was the first premium card. But 1993 Finest and 1993 Flair were the first super premium "Cadillac" sorts of cards.
<< <i>'89 Upper Deck. How many Griffey rookies are in Richard McWilliam's estate? And what percentage of them were issued in packs or complete boxed sets? Nick >>
The set was a groundbreaker visually and quality-wise, but I believe that over time it will decrease in value just due to ridiculous supply and lessing demand.
I've never seen a Griffey sheet, but I'm sure the stories about McA$$hole are not apocryphal. He'd still be printing them now if there was a stronger market for them.

Who has been pimping the 1991 Upper Deck baseball set? I don't think I've ever heard anyone comment on it one way or the other.

To me, it's 89 UD Baseball. It has the most over-rated RC in the history of collecting with Griffey. Still can't believe what people are paying for PSA 9's and 10's knowing there's 2 million cards in circulation.

In the collectible market perception often trumps reality.
Most people know the 89 UD Griffey is just one of 5 Griffey rookies. They also want badly to believe the 89 Griffey UD is an important card -- so it is. And the amount produced doesn't seem to matter to these people. I don't own one but I'd love to get a PSA 10 and sell it one of these dolts on eBAY.

I wanted to place a vote on behalf of my kids. We were discussing this topic the other day and I asked them both (4 and 2) "Which of daddy's cards do you hate the most?" The answer was pretty much any set that isn't 88 Topps stickers. When handling the "not sticker" sets, my 2 yr old asks continously "What I do with them?" with a very confused and frustrated look on his face noticing that the backs don't peel off, nor do the fronts stick to the refrigerator. He's got a point....
<< <i>For me it has to be 1978 and 1979 Topps. A pure plain and ugly design. Not sure why anyone would want to put a PSA 9 or 10 set together. Just flushing money down the toliet.

I can despise the entire persona of BBG (which I do ), without despising an object of it's desire. The 1979 Topps baseball set is a great fondness of my youth, and even having the stigma of BBG attached to it doesn't bother me. It's love of 79 Topps, is one of BBG's rare redeeming qualities to me
<< <i>What other people think doesn't mean a damn in the final analysis. >>
In a media driven society , this statement, IMO, is flawed.
I think the 1978 set is a lot better as a whole then the 1979 set. There are more HOF rookies, HOVG players and multiple stars. I did find it interesting that there is a large contingent of members collecting the PSA graded set in both years. After 1979 the numbers drop immensely per year.

How can a set like 1979 be "overrated" when it was not especially popular ever? Other than maybe 1973 I would 1979 is the least popular set of the 70's.
To me a set, to be "overrated," has to popular!?
Thus, to me, 1975 minis are the most overrated BB set of all time... by far. Tons of miscuts, they look goofy, small size doesn't fit into storage containers, etc....

Close second is 1968 Topps BB in terms of design. However, with the Ryan and bench RCs it could never be #1 on this list.
