Why eBay Sellers Drink Part LXVII: "Lucky be a buyer tonight"

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,389 ✭✭✭✭✭
Amidst the many wonderful eBay buyers I deal with, I've found that a few immensely rotten apples take more than their fair share of my time. Sometimes I just get to look back and laugh, like here (you can't make this stuff up). Let's head back to the end of March. Bidder lucky1688yahoo.com.1688 placed bids on a lot of my items near their end time, and proceeded to retract at least 14 of them. I immediately blocked him. Then I realized he won one of them. As soon as he found he was blocked, he left me a positive feedback to the effect of "remove me from your block list" (eBay removed the comment, kept the positive). Then the emails began image

For added fun, eBay blocks messages sent through eBay messaging to him because his user ID is flagged as a website. Even if his user ID wasn't in my message, it was still blocked. All my replies had to go via email, which then showed up fine in eBay messages. And if you're wondering, since he joined on 1/26/13, he's had 1141 retractions and counting. Yes, that's 1141. While the buyer is likely not a native English speaker, he does live in the US.

hi my friend , i did pay for item # 230950555305. please remove block list from Ebay . i want to buy more coins + paper moneys . many time i retract bid because i see other bidders final price+ i put back behind other bidders same price . your items amount go higher, you earn more . you go back to see on bid history + benefit you. i am not bad bidder. my apologies to you .i put down your are my favor list + feedback positive on your coin i brought. thank you very much.
---

Me:

Hi,

Your usage of bid retractions is a horrendous practice and absolutely forbidden on eBay. The coins I sell will sell based on their merits and the values they deserve, not based on shill bids placed by you, which will then be retracted and make other bidders think I am shill bidding my own auctions. At least one sale (item #230950523405) as already been ruined because of your bidding practices, and I will now need to spend extra time and money to relist the item. Unless you plan on honoring your bid on that item, I will not reconsider removing the block. I am not the only seller who blocks bidders who have many retractions, and you can be sure I will be telling others about your practices.

Thank you,

Jeremy Katz

hi my friend , we are all human being make mistake . please get me second chance. my apologies to you + other bidders. i promise never do again .God bless your family + your businss have good fortune. thank you.

Me:

Hi,

Last Wednesday, you had 615 retractions in the last 12 months. Today you have 638. That's 23 retractions in the last 4 days. I will make a deal with you. I will let you bid on my items if you agree to the following:

1- You will not retract any bid on any item of mine. No exceptions.
2- You will honor every one of your bids on my items, and payment will always be received within 7 days unless otherwise agreed upon.
3- Your 12-month retractions will not surpass 650. You can be sure I'll be checking often.

If you agree to the above, I will let you bid on my items. Those are your promises to me. However, if any of those promises are broken, I will do the following:

1- Block you immediately from my auctions. You will not get another chance.
2- Report your bidding practices to eBay, which will likely result in your account being shut down.
3- I will let every coin seller I know about your practices and encourage them to block you, as well. I guarantee you will be blocked from bidding on many more auctions that interest you.

Please let me know if you agree.

Thank you,

Jeremy Katz

Lucky:

hi my friend , i will not retract bid any your items . i thank you get me a second chance.

---

Me (thinking I can help save the eBay seller community):

Hi,

I have taken you off my block list. Please remember my requirements. You cannot retract a bid on any of my items, and I also expect that you will stop retracting bids on ALL items. If I see you continue to retract bids with other sellers, I will put you back on my block list.

---

Lucky (one of my favorite messages... love the last sentence):

hi my friend, if i wanted your coins or other items belong to your , so easy to get because i have good friends + family members accounts on EBAY. you only worry about your coins , not other sellers items. everybody make mistake before or few time in life. other people get your chance before. i known your work hard + so much headache to relist again.you still do not remove block list. i am( beginner collector ). you put too hard me. other sellers do not care retract bid + even EBAYTOO.i am apologies many time to you . i brought coin from your before , the feedback i do not put down bad message on your Ebay account. you are hardhead person, thank you for attention

---

Me:

Hi,

You are not on my blocked bidder list, and I removed you when I said I did. The only reason you would be blocked at this time is if you have met my requirements that automatically block bidders--excessive unpaid items or policy violations.

[Note: at this point, he was back on my list and won't be removed, just in case my other requirements don't stop him]

Okay. Break time. That was 3/28-4/4. Now, jump to May 9. He's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

I get an email from eBay saying a buyer protection case has been opened. The item is damaged and the buyer wants a full refund plus shipping.

The case details:
The buyer says the item doesn't match the description.
The buyer paid on Mar 27, 2013.
The item is damaged
Additional information:
"hi ,i would like to return item to you because item is damaged, thanks.05-09-13. "
The buyer requested:
A refund. The refund amount includes the purchase price plus original shipping.

---

Me:

"Hi, Tracking shows that this item was delivered on April 1. Could you please explain why the problem is only being reported now, on May 9, nearly 6 weeks after delivery? Thank you, Jeremy Katz"

---

Lucky:

"HI I WOULD LIKE TO RETURN ITEM TO YOU BECAUSE ITEM IS DAMAGED, THANKS.05-09-13."

---

Me:

"Hi, This item had a 14 day return policy. Tracking shows that the item was delivered on April 1, which means the return period expired on April 15, which was over 21 days ago. Can you please explain why you are only now requesting to return the item? Thank you, Jeremy Katz"

---

Lucky:

"hi, can you get me vaild return address for full refund, item #230950555305,thanks.05-10-13."

---

Me:

"Hi, The return period for this item ended on April 15, which was 14 days after the item ended. Without an explanation as to why the return is being requested nearly 4 weeks after the end of the return period, I cannot accept a return for this item. Thank you, Jeremy Katz"

---

Lucky:

"hi,on Ebay policy is 45 days ,did you known policy , i will return item for full refund , i will be victory end,you will be lose to me , your are cold heart persons, i ask you for favor before but you not accepted me, did you know how much i spending on Ebay past two half monthS , i just begin to collect coins + antique items on 01-23-13.my star COLOR on EBAY NOW IS BLUE COLOR ,You are make big mistake in your whole life, thanks.05-10-13. "

[Notes: 1- Oooooh, blue star! 2- At this point, I stopped responding.]

---

As soon as he could, Lucky escalated the claim to eBay. A few hours later, I won. I only wish he had sent me a follow-up email of some kind. It would have been so enjoyable.

Looks like the user ID lucky1688yahoo.com is completely scrubbed from the eBay archives. The only remotely close one is lucky1688, who had 9 positives with seller comments in Mandarin Chinese before being NARUed in 2001.

For just a split second, it was a mix of being nicer and more trusting than I should have been, combined with the knowledge that he was winning quite a bit of items, so perhaps it could have made money. Basically, I was going to put him on a super short leash to see if it could help sales. Hey, some new bidders have been clueless with how eBay is supposed to work until they're told flat out. Guess I failed rather miserably on this one.

SleazeBay obviously really only cares about how much revenue they can generate by allowing whack jobs like this to accumulate over 1000 bid retractions in 6 months and still be an active member. The venue has literally sold their soul to the devil.

It's only entertaining for the first minute; after that, the buyer is a nuisance
and I can't blame you for blocking him. Too bad he had won a lot before you
had the chance of axing him. He then had you on a string for awhile.

Glad it all worked out. Too bad there isn't a way of blocking an IP address
and not just a buyer's name.

I feel sorry for people like this, not because they are nut jobs, but because they don't know the English language very well...

In his messages it seems the guy has some type of mental problem or just illiterate??? Either way, I'm glad I don't sell that much on ebay because of guys like this.
    "It is what it is."
  • I think it's interesting how he cares so much about his feedback score but doesn't take the time to leave any positive feedback for his sellers. If you check his feedback left for others, he seems to leave like half-negatives...
  • Sounds like you would make an excellent therapist.

This ought to be a controversial post........

Don't forget that there is between a 1% and 2% prevalence of significant mental illness in society. If you count anxiety/depression and other mood disorders it's much higher.

Many schizophrenics and people with personality disorders (the ones that can really drive you crazy) drive, vote, buy, sell, attend coin shows, post in Internet forums, file lawsuits, raise children, and generally gum up otherwise well-functioning systems with their irrational and irregular behavior. As a whole they're vastly undertreated and we don't devote much energy or time to improving their lot in life. In my business, one person like this can consume the time and effort required to assist a dozen other "normal" people.

When it comes to the OP's eBay experience, there are 300 million people in the US. Blocking a few dozen really shouldn't hurt his ability to buy and sell. Apart from the entertainment value, why bother?
