Always a tough grade and a tough coin. Decent for a Dansco, non-certified set. I believe there may be some slight surface issues that may preclude grading, but I look at it as VF, on the lower end.
Yes, there are always potential problems on non-certified and slight surface issues, but this coin, in this grade, will always find a home with a collector if you need to sell. Not all 1872s are perfect VFs. This one is has a lot of meat.
I'm sure I won't be the only one to suggest a soak in acetone, or mineral spirits, and some careful use of a thorn to remove some of the old gunk. There may be some verdigris that likely can't be removed though. Aside from that, I think it may be a legit VF coin. This and the 1871 tend to have LIBERTY weak on occasion, with the rest of the coin showing stronger details. This seems to be one of those. The feathers and feather tips on this coin are quite sharp. That said though, the value will likely be kept on the lower end, as many insist on seeing a full sharp LIBERTY at that grade level, and the traces of verdigris don't help either. Regardless, a decent example of a very tough IHC for an album collection.
The sharpness grade is Fine-12, but there are some environmental issues on the reverse. Generally the quality of the bronze that was used to make Indian cents until about 1878 or so was of a lower quality than the later issues. This is a nice example of a tough date. Some dealers think that the 1872 Indian cent is as tough as the 1877 despite the higher mintage.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
