Just curious, who's buying?

Assuming the current model of unlimited orders taken over a month or so, I still think that this, like the UHR, will be great medium to long term even if the sales numbers are high. Whether or not this is the sales model, I hope to buy several - one or two to keep and more to sell in a few years. Given the popularity of this coin and how fantastic an RP will look, the UHR model seems valid. Of course, the 20th anniv. AGE RP, while it's done well, has not done as well as I thought that it would.

I'm very interested in what others think.

The UHR was a one-of-a-kind. The RP Buffalo, like the RP gold, silver and platinum eagles, is an existing design in a different finish, with a possibility of more to come. I don't expect it to do as well in terms of price appreciation.

I must be the only one who sees no novelty, only ugly. To me the reverse proof look is one of the fugliest presentations, ever, no matter the design. It actually makes the Shriver commem look good in comparison -- and that's saying something!

As a youngish, new collector I have not spent more then $150 on a coin needless to say I have no gold or anything very "cool" but I will put all my unnecessary purchases aside so I can scrape together for one of those. Made my weekend with this news. (I hope that doesn't make me sound lame.)

Interesting. But it looks like the mint may never do fractional Buffalos again. Only the one ouncers. So this may be good for the 2008 fractionals. I will try to buy one from the mint and hope for a PF70 First Stike. Probably be aournd $1750. Hope it is late fall though when they are offered. I just sold my2006 AGE PCGS PR70 First Strike Reverse Proof last month as well as all my other platinum and silver reverse proofs.

Score one more for the "ugly" camp. IMO, part of the appeal to the original design was the rugged look of the chief in particular but also the buffalo. Reverse the proofing and the coin becomes glitzed and perfect for the Red Carpet...LOL

Still, do you not agree that mirroring a design that is supposed to reveal the ruggedness and raw character is given Hollywood glitz by the proof process in general, and even more by the reverse proof?

Then there is the regular proof buff and the UNC AGE - man, shaping up to be an expensive year.

My first opinion is that I really don't care for it. I'll reserve final judgement for better pics.

How will a frosted design in a field of lumps look ? ? My customer insists on 24K gold. There's no argument , only unanswered questions. How will it look in hand ? She barely opens the box and then stashes them. And those type of customers I beg... "PLEASE put my business card with your coins, so when you die, your family will bring them back to me "

The mint is wearing out the reverse proof design in my opinion. Time to do more ultra high reliefs instead.

I was reading in NN that the RP Buff will be minted to demand. I wonder what that demand will be.

It looks like going forward, there won't be any more limited mintage sets which sell out in a day. Bodes very well for some sets like the ASE 25th set.

Collectors with limited budgets may have to decide on buying just one of the two 2013-W American Buffalo Gold Coins that will be released by the United States Mint this year. This article provides coin images for the two versions to offer comparisons that may help in making a buying decision.

On Thursday, May 23, 2013, the U.S. Mint will release its standard, annually issued 2013-W Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin. At a future yet-to-be announced date, the U.S. Mint will also release a special 2013-W Reverse Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the design appearing on both coins. Never before has the Mint released this type of Buffalo coin.

Just to be clear, the standard version that has been issued annually since 2006 is a proof. The commemorative version for the centennial is a reverse proof.

"Reversing the mirror-like background finish of a traditional proof coin and applying it to the design elements of the coin achieves a magnificent contrast," the United States Mint website describes.

Found on American Buffalo Gold Coins is the heads and tails designs as first created by James Earle Fraser for the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel. This includes a heads with a profile of a Native American and a reverse with the image of an American Buffalo.

Since their original release, all Buffalo gold coins have been composed from 24-karat, or 99.99% pure, gold. Because of their gold content, prices for the coins can change weekly. The standard annual proof will launch on the 23rd with a starting price of $1,790. The U.S. Mint has said it will use the same pricing method for when the reverse proof is released. While the totals can change, collectors are looking at a sizable, roughly $3,600 amount to own both coins. That is why some may stick to buying only one of them.

I think the "matte finish" refers to the box, not the coin.

"The coin is presented in an elegant hardwood box with a matte finish and a leather-like inset."

The coin pictured on the Mint's website looks like a regular proof.

Not to mention that I long ago have lost any desire to buy anything from the US Mint. (Oops - I mentioned it anyway).

Kind of a disappointment; I had been excited about it.

Had the reverse proof been the norm since 2006 and the "normal" version the one just coming out, I would be thrilled and order for sure. It is a very handsome gold coin in its regular proof version.

I'm not sure...I was all ready to order one or two, but I really don't like the looks of it. Maybe it looks better in person, I don't know. But with the huge premium the mint now charges, it makes the decision tougher...

I think all of the Mint's Reverse Proofs so far have been beautiful, so I'm gonna guess the 2013 Buffalo will be too! I think we need a PCGS RP registry set...

There's so much contrast in the CW pic of the RP, all that black shadowing, kind of distorts the RP image compared to the regular finish proof. I think the RP will look good in hand, therefore, I'm staying the course, in for two RPs.
