Case Fresh 1982 Topps baseball wax box from BBCE (and other BBCE shrinkwrapped 70s/80s boxes)

Just got UPS delivery today of the 1982 Topps baseball wax box I ordered from Steve last week. The box is truly case fresh and as clean as any 1982 Topps wax box I've seen.

Thankfully, I've gotten a nice headstart on the 80's as I've already noticed the increased competition. At least Tim is still only interested in 80's Topps so I can still hoard the other two. image

Let's see. An '82 wax box, '82 cellos. '82 grocery racks, '83 cellos, '83 wax, and even OMG an '83 Donruss Fun Bag! Oh my, the unopened world is turned upside down. Tim, it looks to me like you just yelled "Cannonball"!!!!!

Those of you who were participating in group rips back in the early days may recall when Steve got in a sealed 1980 Topps baseball wax case. Here's a full box from that case..

How can you tell if a box is case fresh? Does it have to be shrink wrapped in the cellophane? Please excuse my ignorance. Thanks, Tom

Tom, the case fresh boxes are boxes that Steve pulled straight from a sealed case. Topps did not shrinkwrap boxes during this era so there is no way to know by looking at the box in its original state, but Steve will shrinkwrap the box and in recent years will indicate that the box is case fresh on the sticker outside the cellophane.

And the final piece in the BBCE wax box run, 1975 Topps mini baseball. I bought this particular box about 12 years ago from Steve, and still somewhat surprised I haven't yielded to temptation to open it, as I have opened a few REA boxes during that time. I credit the BBCE shrinkwrap for saving the poor 36 packs inside from ripping carnage. image

The big question is, what was the going price on the mini boxes 12 years ago?

  • << <i>The big question is, what was the going price on the mini boxes 12 years ago? >>

I'm gonna guess in the ballpark of $600.

Wonderful boxes, Tim. When was the last time you saw case fresh '76 wax boxes?
  • Grote, amazing collection of boxes. I think Ive seen 79 and even possibly 78 but Ive never come across a 76 at BBCE's website. Thats a beauty. Almost a 35 year old wax box. That is some serious wax right there. I still haven't received my 82 yet. I was actually surprised you got your already actually. I think that the 82 is going to be the new hot item for sealed wax boxes. 82 has a vintage feel to it as well and it seems hard to come by. You saw how quick those last 6 boxes went once I announced it. Gone in less than an hr. Thats never happened before. I think sealed products are starting to become very popular now on these boards.

Thanks, fellas, appreciate all the kind words. The arrival of the '82 box made me realize I have a complete run from 75 through 83 now, but missing '76. For some reason, '76 seems to be a very tough box to find intact and original from the case. I don't even recall offhand ever seeing a full '76 Topps baseball wax box for sale on the BBCE site.

Lamehohn, the '75 mini box was actually $1,200 12 years ago, iirc. The value of 75 mini wax boxes was pretty flat over the years, and actually declined to about 1K a box shortly after all the Conlon cases were sold off by REA about 4-5 years ago. Since then, though, prices have risen sharply, as they have with all wax boxes from this era.

I haven't seen a 1976 wax box from a sealed case in a long, long time. I do recall BBCE having a 1976 wax box probably 3 or 4 years ago, but it wasn't from a case.

I have one more BBCE wax box that sequentially fits this thread.

Nice run Tim. I am trying to make my runs from sealed cases but it is so damn tough anymore.

Mike - I seem to remember that 74 box. image

Now we need Jim (MacrosB) to pull out his stuff to finish the run from 73-60. image
