    Thanks for sharing! >>

Welcome. I really like them as well. 1985 Topps is hands down my favorite set from all years and companies. Simple, clean, bold with strong rookie and star power. To me, virtually every card has an iconic quality to it.
  • Picked up a few more items for my collection recently. A 1989 and 1990 OPC factory set. Interesting how big the 1990 set is in comparison to previous years. Its a full 792 card set! Also managed to grab a 1990 Fleer Canada wax box at a decent price. These will go in my PC for now.

No clue how I missed this thread initially, but I'm certainly glad you bumped it. Love those jumbo boxes! Any particular box you're after to add to the pc?

Nice pickups. If I may be so bold, would you mind PMing me the price you paid for the 1990 Fleer Canadian box? I'm only asking because I've been tracking sales on those for the past year and they don't come up often so any new data is appreciated. Thanks!

    You skipped 84 Topps??

I mean as far as a wax box.

If Jumbo boxes for like 88 exist, I would like one of those. I have 87 and 89. Also looking for 1990, 91, and 92.

I am enjoying finding rare pack types. Not so much because of the cards, but more of 'how' they are being sold. Grocery rack packs are on my list as well. I dont know how many "officially" come in a sealed box as I dont have any, but I have been getting 12 and calling it "complete".

  • << <i>You skipped 84 Topps?? >>

I did. At least as a wax box. I have 1 rack pack box. But I will eventually get to it.

I've seen a few jumbo cases but they've all been opened. If I came across any that were still factory sealed I would be all over them but it's just too easy for sellers to search those packs for the All-Rookie cards. So far I've only been able to find two 1989 cases that were still sealed. Good luck on your quest.

    << <i>

<< <i>Commentary: These are two boxes of 1987 Jumbo boxes. These were not very cheap considering the cards that are in them, but I got them mainly for the rarity of the box and packs. There is one box on eBay resting at $100 which I wont touch and the seller won't budge much on the price. So he can keep them. These are in packs of 100 as well with the All Star Rookie Team special cards in each pack. So they are a welcome addition to this collection. >>

I don't remember coming across these back in the day. Any idea as if these were a regional thing or retailer (i.e. Walmart) exclusive? Has the gum fused to the top cards? Any Bonds or Bo showing?

    Snorto~ >>

I remember buying or at least seeing these 1987 Jumbos all the time in the local grocery stores in 1987. Not sure if it was regional or not but I'm in Michigan FWIW.

Great additions and I hope you'll keep us posted on anything new. Like Foo mentioned - I love the threads with lots of collection pictures.

BTW - they Topps made Jumbo packs in '93, as well. I believe they contained 5 or 6 gold cards - and are relatively tough to find.

Yes they did indeed. They have 5 gold card per pack. I have 2 sealed boxes of Series 1. Although they are jumbo, they only have 41 cards per pack, while these other jumbo have 100 cards per pack (split into 2 sections). I don't have of the series 2 despite lack of interest in that series, they also seem difficult to get.

Incidentally, the rack packs have 3 gold cards, cello packs have 2 gold cards, and standard packs have 1 gold card. I think the Factory set came with 10 gold cards and BBCE has a vending box with 500 gold cards!! (go figure).

  • Commentary: I have added, and completed the 80's portion of the Topps Baseball Jumbo boxes when this box of 1988 arrived the other day. This one seemed the most elusive of the bunch, for whatever reason. But I am glad to have it in my collection now. I know there is still 1990, 1991 and 1992 of the jumbo packs, but I have yet to see boxes in this format.

Wow!!! This is a great thread. Love the pics and the commentary. Thanks for sharing!!
  • Incidentally, has anyone ever seen these variants from 1991 Topps? They are both standard 15-card packs with gum. One is packaged similar to a "Michigan Test" pack, while the other has crimped sides. And then there is a regular wax pack version out there. So that makes 3 kinds of packs for the standard 15-card pack, in addition to cellos, racks, and jumbos.

I have two packs like this from the 1989 set. I was wondering the same thing.
  • Other stuff I forgot to post are these two boxes that I got in the last couple of months:

Commentary: This is the 1985 Topps Traded wax box. Unfortunately the 1985 Topps Traded set was not a very good set. With Vince Coleman never panning out, the key card in this set is Rickey Henderson in a Yankee uniform. But this box in and of itself is very rare, especially as a complete box. What is unfortunate is that they only have 8 cards per pack, instead of the usual 15. So the box is lighter in weight than a normal 1985 box. It is exceedingly expensive compared to a standard wax box and there is no reason to rip this box open. But for one who is collecting all types of boxes/packs from the 80's, this is a nice box to have in my collection.

    image
    image

Commentary: Lastly is a 1989 Topps "Michigan Test" box. I dont know the history of these (nor of the 91 packs I just posted). But this is a welcome box in my collection as I dont know how many are out there. I wonder if they did this for 1990.

    Cool thread thanks for sharing!

I actually picked up a jumbo box of 1991 and a cello box of 1991 from my LCShop

They were on the bargain shelf, he asked me if I was starting a fire?? LoL!!

Found a Chipper Rc showing through a cello pack. That made the purchase image

    Havent looked at the jumbos

What do the edges of those "Michigan" packs look like? Is it folded tight like a normal wax pack or is there a seam on each side.

I have a different 1989 (and 1990) wrapper I'll get a picture of and put up for you.

Which are you referring to? The 1991 packs? The 89's are wrapped similar to a normal wax. I will get scans up and post the fronts and backs of each to show comparisons.

I was talking about the 1989 packs. I have the 1989 and 1990 boxes similar to the 1991 shown.

I need to find a box of the 1989 packs like you are showing.

Yes I did get that box! Was a cool find. Not too bad of a price either (all things considered of course).

  • Ok, so here is an update to my collection. I have taken the time to lay them out on my bookshelves. I think they look good. I dont have enough space for everything. So I will need another bookshelf for the remainder. But the blunt of it is from 1981

That is one awesome unopened collection you have amassed. I love the layout by shelf with unopened boxes by year and loose packs and racks to compliment the boxes. Great arrangement and an impressive shrine to the wax Gods. Keep posting the great photos!

Oh!! I totally forgot about that. You really think if that was a full box it would be just sitting on its side like that? That would be the star attraction! Incidentally, a guy at a local shop gave it to me when I bought the last pack of 1980 from him.

Thanks for compliments! I do like my collection image

Thanks man image I enjoy looking at it actually.

1980 would make the run more or less complete. Even though there are still many holes in the collection, I have something from each year except 1980. I would be willing to trade a sealed BBCE box for my loose 76 football and 75 mini wax packs if anyone is reading this (I have other stuff to trade as well).

Outside of that, I dont have many rack boxes which need to get filled in as well as some cello boxes. Donruss and Fleer rack packs are nearly just as tough so those might have to be built pack by pack just to make it happen. Same thing with grocery racks.

Some need to be re-bought. I realized that the Leaf boxes I bought are not perfect as in the Series 1 box, there is a pack for Series 2. Plius they did not come sealed. So I will probably rip those at some point. Also see a 1986 Topps wax has 35 packs, so that will probably be opened as well.

In the long run I would like to see if I can build a box of wax trays from 1980, and 1980 and 81 super cellos.

In the meantime I have been picking up cheap wax from the 90's to satiate my buying. I figure early 90's would be cheap to grab at the moment.

Are you going to do the oddball issues as well? I like them. They're cheap, and usually have better graphics/artwork on the boxes so they display nicely.

Don't forget the 1989 and 1990 Donruss Canadian.

Oddball...you mean like the Jumbo boxes? Then, yeah. I am trying to have at least one box of each type the cards were sold in. As long as they were distributed in pack form. I have traded sets for most of the years, even though they were released primarily as a factory released set. But I will do my best to find complete boxes. Also vending boxes are something I will get eventually. Its quite an array of products if you come to think of it. Even though its mostly topps, Donruss and Fleer both released cellos and rack packs from every year.

I have 3 boxes of 87 Leaf and one from 1986. I need 88 and 89. Did they do 1990? Also have the 1990 Fleer Canadian box, which is sitting there.
  • ReggieClevelandReggieCleveland Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭✭✭
In oddball I meant the stickers, league leaders mini, double headers, pop-ups, etc.

Donruss made Canadian issues in 1989-1991. The cards themselves are the same but the boxes and wrappers have slight variations.

Oh that stuff. I am not as invested in those kinds of things. If anything, maybe 1981 and 1986 Fleer Star Stickers. But outside of that, probably not. I used to collect that stuff when I was younger. The minis, the jumbo size cards, the double headers, coins, marbles, etc. They were fun. But I am focused on the card end of it all right now.

I did not know Donruss released Canadian editions.

Pic brings back memories. All these 80's unopened pics and threads have me thinking about buying a couple of early Donruss(never could find Donruss in my area) boxes and leave unopened, like say 81-84.
  • My newest edition. A 1987 Topps Football wax box from a sealed case arrived the other day. Nice the box bottom looks clean with Walter Payton.

  • Update: I recently picked up 2 boxes of 1991 OPC at, what I think, very good prices. The box on the left was described as "from a sealed case". I am not sure how one verifies that by the box alone. But I am happy. I also grabbed a 1988 OPC Factory set. Does anyone know anything about these? The seller said they were "exclusive to Toys-R-Us". Is this true? I had also read that it was not released factory sealed. Even though this one did. There is a TRus sticker on the side, but that does not sound exclusive. It does feature 4 bonus cards. I am not sure what those are.

Not sure about the 88 factory set, I know mine isn't sealed and doesn't show signs of having been sealed. But that doesn't mean much.

I think the 4 cards are Toronto/Montreal cards that Topps didn't produce. Or somehow "Canadian Only" in theme. I don't recall any of them being too desirable.

It appears new. I dont know how rare these are versus some of the other factory sets. I have not seen them before. I have 1989 and 1990. I assume there is a 1991 as there is a 1992.

1988 was not factory wrapped, but it is unclear if Toys R Us did it or it was done afterward.

The 1988 OPC Delino DeShields was mildly popular when he was a rookie prospect with the Expos. His other cards weren't produced until the '90 sets.
