I didn't really expect MadBum to get blown up like this. With Timmy going tomorrow, and Zito going the next day, Giants are gonna need to generate some major offense to avoid getting swept.
And once again the team gets owned by a halfway decent pitcher. The offense disappears again. If it werent for Hunter Pence the team would have scored one whole run in the last 18 innings.
MadBum's performance didn't surprise me.
Sure they can beat the Dodgers but they need to find a way to beat mediocre teams outside of the division.

He's a good pitcher. He'd probably cost a few prospects, but he comes with a fat contract of $25m/year through 2015, with an option/buyout for 2016 that makes Zito's look cheap.
But with the possibility of 3 starting pitchers not returning next year (Timmy's contract expires, Zito's option won't vest, and Voggy's $6.5m option for next year looks murky right now), the Giants may need to make some bold moves for the future. Cain and Bum are here for the long haul. We have no idea if any of our pitching talent will do anything.
My honest opinion is Timmy isn't coming back next year. Despite what lots of fans here want to believe I think he hates it here and has been using every tactic to financially penalize the organization for wanting to keep him around through his control years. That should have been pretty evident when he turned down that nine figure extension offer last year. I don't know about Zito but as long as Vog doesn't spin totally off the hook I think chances are he'll be around next year.
I haven't heard about the Cliff Lee rumor, but the idea is intriguing. But the question is, does the team even have prospects worth anything as trade bait?

Giants have a crop of minor league pitchers who are looking solid. A bunch of potential "Matt Cain clones" as one writer put it. I think the biggest part of the deal would be taking $75m worth of contract obligations off the Phillies hands as they look to start building out for the future (assuming they are sellers at the trade deadline).
If the Giants are doing THIS vs the 3rd place team in the NL East, how do you think they'll do vs the 1st place team in the NL East? Gonna be a nasty ugly weekend for Giants baseball when the Braves come for a 4 game set.
If this is how 2013 Giants baseball looks, I don't think there's a team in the league that the Giants can truly challenge.
Casilla down with a knee injury. I hope Machi didn't unpack.
El Mechon got clipped, but the Giants still managed to win. If Belt didn't suffer a brain freeze between 1st and 2nd earlier in the game, the game would have ended with Zito getting the W and Romo getting the save. Oy.
I'm enjoying this new Barry Zito who dominates at AT&T Park: In 5 home games this year, he's given up 2 runs in 33 innings, and the Giants are 5-0 behind him.
It really looks like Voggy channeled everything he had into 2011 and 2012, because right now, he seems to have cratered harder out of the gate than he ever did in any year prior to coming to SF, and he was a pretty bad pitcher back in the day.
This year, he's got 1 quality start in 7 starts. Last year he had 6 in 7.
Well, it's good to see that the team can light up a good pitcher every once in a while, a guy who has owned the Giants for the good part of the last decade.
Cain pitches another very quality start. Is this a sign he's shaken off the hiccups of April?

<< <i>Cain pitches another very quality start. Is this a sign he's shaken off the hiccups of April? >>
Well, he was dominant vs the lowly Dodgers, and he was dominant vs one of the best teams in the NL.
Now we just need to hope that Voggy and Lincecum figure things out.
Last time Hudson took a loss vs the Giants was in 2006. He got lit up in the first 3 innings for 8 runs: Moises Alou (2 run homer), Omar Vizquel (4 RBI), Steve Finley (1 RBI), and Mark Sweeney (1 RBI) drove in those runs vs Hudson.
Oy. There's a lineup that conjures up some bad-dreams for Giants fans. However, it's the suckage of that 2006 team that resulted in us getting the #10 pick in the next draft. Giants picked MadBum with it.
I remember back then fans were calling out for the "youth movement." We wanted to see more:
Fred Lewis Nate Schierholtz Dan Ortmeier Kevin Frandsen Travis Ishikawa
I wasn't really expecting the Giants to have a pair of blowout wins vs the Braves this weekend, especially vs their #1 and #2 starters. MadBum's a beast when he's on, and he's "on" more often than he's "off" these days.
Weird weekend. I expected the Giants to get lit up, but instead it was they who did the lighting, holding the Braves to 4 runs over the last 3 games while posting 23 of their own. They also out homered the Braves 6-2 over the whole series.
Over the first 22 home games, the Giants have hit 20 homers. Last year they hit 6 homers in the first 22 home games. They went on to hit a total of 31 homers at home for all of 2012.
The homer guys in 2012 were: Sandoval = 2 Huff, Pagan, Posey, Blanco= 1 each
2013 Posey, Pence, Sandoval = 4 each Crawford, Belt = 2 each Torres, Quiroz, Pagan, Scutaro = 1 each
The power's coming from the 3, 4, and 5 spots in the lineup. In 2012, they lacked a real #5 hitter, using Huff, Pill, and Schierholtz, and Pagan in that spot early in the season.
Lincecum mentioned that after the last turn of the rotation got rolled, the starting pitchers got together and "kicked each other in the ass" and pushed each other to step it up. The result has been a strong showing from the 1, 2, and 3 starters and the smothering of the deadly Braves. I suppose a little pep-talk works sometimes.
After yesterday's game, the Giants sent Francisco Peguero back to Fresno and recalled Brett Pill. Pill's been raking in AAA, and he's a much better option (between he and Peguero) as a "righty off the bench." Plus, given that the Giants will be in an AL park for the next 2 games, he gives the Giants a DH with some power.
I wonder how many runs the Giants can give up today? Already at 9 after 6 innings.
Giants came into this game with +19 runs differential. Right now that number has fallen to 12. Its very possible that by the time the Giants leave Toronto tomorrow night, they'll have a negative number.
Lose by a single run or by 15, it's all the same. Apparently the team can compete when playing at home but come a team with a bad record in an unfamiliar ballpark it's all bets are off. My prediction is the they lose tomorrow the same way they will lose tonight.
Dickey has sucked this season, except for tonight.
All four Bay Area teams play tonight. I'm getting the feeling now that all four teams will lose tonight.

For SF Bay Area pro sports fans, the 2012 MLB season, the 2012-2013 NFL season, the 2012-2013 NBA season and the 2012-2013 NHL season have been very fun. 5 out of the 6 pro sports teams in the SF Bay Area have played very well, have made the playoffs, have won a World Series, have played in the Superbowl and are currently competing for the NBA and NHL titles. The Giants and A's were great in 2012 and look to be very good again in 2013. The 49rs just missed winning the Superbowl and are loaded again for 2013. The Sharks are perpetually in the NHL playoffs and may break through this year and play for the Stanley Cup. The Warriors have been a huge surprise and look to be finally on the path to being playoff contenders again. Only the Raiders have not gotten better.
After years or decades of lousy pro sports, the SF Bay Area has really good teams again.

Playoff caliber, yes, but it's winning it all that ultimately counts. Giants have done their thing, and are the only team to have done so. 49ers laid an egg in the Super Bowl, and considering how the Super Bowl loser is no different than the worst team by record in the league, what they accomplished last season will only be remembered for its infamy. Sharks will likely lose this series in 5 games while the A's are no better than a 3rd place team at this time. Raiders will probably be the worst team in the NFL next season, which will earn them the first overall draft pick, which in turn they will use to draft one ginormous bust.
As for the Warriors, my feeling is the Spurs will be the team moving on. I don't think the league nor media networks can stomach the Spurs going home while the Warriors move on. The refs and the league will do everything in their power to prevent that from happening.

And no worries about parking, I'll be taking the BART from my sisters place.

AT&T Park is arguably the coldest baseball park in the majors. Some players have even invoked their no-trade clauses so they wouldn't have to play at AT&T Park. It's colder and breezier than Dodger Stadium and Petco Park.
Bart then a walk or Bart then a transfer to Muni Metro is the best way to do it. Do not under any circumstances drive to a game. Just don't do it.

Some Brewers players who were chatting up the fans at AT&T Park a few years ago complained that SF in the summer was like Green Bay in the winter. I know he was exaggerating, but if someone from Wisconsin is complaining about SF being cold, then it must be freaking cold!
The Bart/Muni thing is good advice. I forgot that my wife and I did that in our last trip to the park.

Melky and DeRosa doing damage to the Giants sucks.
Speaking of ex-Giants... it's being reported that the Jonathan Sanchez is close to signing with... the Dodgers!
Of course the newer Giants fans have never experienced watching a night game at Candlestick Park. Compared to the Stick, AT&T Park feels like an oven. The winds were 10x worse, it felt like your seats were a half mile from the field and 7000 people in attendance at a game was considered a busy night. You hated the place and rightfully so, but when the newer fans complain about having to bring a blanket to AT&T you wish you could bring them back in time to a game at the Stick.
Depending on where in the area you're coming in from, take Caltrain, Bart, Muni, Muni Metro or the ferry to the ballpark. Of the several dozen times I've been to AT&T since 2000, I have never driven there and hardly has anybody I know.

I'll give Cain the benefit of doubt tonight because they played at Coors Field, which has the tendency to turn into a giant pinball machine. The place can turn an AT&T infield pop-up into a warning track fly ball, and that's not an exaggeration. Combine that with unhumidified juiced balls and multiple homers are bound to happen.

Remember back when the team had good pitching and a good defense? Yeah, those were the days.
The 3rd inning isn't over and they've committed 4 errors already. Most teams don't commit 4 errors in an entire week. What's the record for most errors in a single game?
4 errors in 3 innings and a grand slam. Sometimes you just deserve to lose.

Remember back just a few months ago when the Giants won the world series? If you read WTCG's posts, you'd think the Giants were in dead last and hadn't sniffed the playoffs in decades. Sir, you are nothing but a miserable lout who cannot find any joy in sports. When you live to point out the flaws of the teams you claim to admire, and are unable to find joy in the wins, then you need some time away.
For the record, the Giants, for all their supposed faults, still leading the NL West and have the fourth best record in all of the NL, this despite not having their best pitching starts so far this year.
Team has committed 12 errors in these 5 games. While that adds to the 10 unearned runs, it also created high-stress innings and racked up the pitch count on the starters.
At the start of this road trip, the Giants had scored 18 more runs than they gave up. 5 games into this 6 game road trip, that number now stands at zero. 202 runs allowed drops the Giants to second-from-last in the NL. However, their 202 runs scored is good for 3rd in the NL.
I never expected that all 5 starters would fall into a funk and struggle simultaneously. Timmy admitted that after he threw the ball into RF, he totally lost it mentally and the rest of his game proved it true. Everyone's got dead eyes and dead arms. It might not be a bad idea to call up a starter from AAA to burn a start so the whole rotation gets a start pushed back.
I took a weekend trip to Yosemite so I was without TV or Internet for the last few days. Consequently I missed the last two games. I was hoping they would win at least a game but apparently not. Not only did they lose the series they got destroyed in both weekend games. If anybody is happy with how the team has been playing recently they are insane or just content with suckage.
At least the Dodgers have been sucking just as bad if not worse.
Anyways I got tickets for tonight's game. I'm near the ballpark now about to enter. Not expecting much but here goes.

<< <i>I'll be at the game in San Francisco on June 17th against the Padres. Really looking forward to seeing the ballpark! >>
You're in for a treat then. It's a great park. Where will you be sitting?
Make sure you bring something warm too. Even in the summer, it gets pretty darn chilly at night in the Park.
Oh, and parking kinda sucks. Get that all figured out before you arrive if you can. >>
Not sure where I'll be sitting yet. My brother-in-laws co-worker has season tickets in the outfield that he is going to try and get, but we may just use stubhub.
I hear ya loud and clear on the chill in the air. I was at games at both Dodger Stadium and Petco Park in early August and experienced some cool summer evenings. Obviously Northern California is more extreme.
And no worries about parking, I'll be taking the BART from my sisters place.
Thanks for the tips, though. Can't wait!

<< <i>Lose by a single run or by 15, it's all the same.
Edited to add: At least they scored a few funs in garbage time, making the final score look a bit more respectable. >>
Exactly as I predicted, four Bay Area teams played tonight and the grand total of games won combined? Zero. Zilch. Nada. Zippo. None. Maximum suckage all around with 3 of the 4 teams getting destroyed.
Nights of comprehensive sucking. Feels a lot like 1994 - 2010 all over again.

Depending on where in the area you're coming in from, take Caltrain, Bart, Muni, Muni Metro or the ferry to the ballpark. Of the several dozen times I've been to AT&T since 2000, I have never driven there and hardly has anybody I know.

The dirty one headed to L.A.? That'll be fun. I was thinking if Roy Halladay didn't end up being done for the season I swear he would've ended up as a Dodger by the All Star weekend. Could Cliff Lee end up with the Dodgers?
With or without the juice Melky could still play. DeRosa seems like half the time he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat, much less a baseball.

Just not at the level he showed in SF or KC.

Depends on where they're at. Right now, the Phillies have a better record than the Dodgers do. If the Dodgers are still in LAst pLAce, a move like that would be dumb.

Could be...
Agent Ned: We haven't met our Ex-Giant quota for the year yet, lets get this guy!
or
Agent Ned: Need moar starting pitchers!!!!!!
or
Koufax: Get this guy, Ned, I have a hunch....
or
Dodgers org: Hi there Jonathan Sanchez. Now you're out b**ch and we're gonna parade your carcass around the minors. Bwahahahaha!!!!!
Because we remember you. We remember this:

Ironically, none of these runs are being counted as "earned runs" against Vogelsong due to the errors.

It's rather shocking to see this team suddenly start playing so poorly all over. I hope they leave this crap here in Toronto.

Maybe if the game really gets out of hand we could get to see Buster pitch an inning. He couldn't do any worse than Voge.

Buster was a closer in college. However, I think Pence would be far more entertaining looking as a pitcher.

Matt Cain, dude needs to get it together.
Going into 2013, he had allowed 3 homers in a game 5 times over his entire career.
Over his past 6 starts, he's done it 3 times. He's on an historically bad pace here.
Whats nuts is that the Giants are 2-1 in those games!

<< <i>Combine that with unhumidified juiced balls and multiple homers are bound to happen. >>
Do you believe in the rumors (or conspiracy theories) that the Rockies strategically manipulate the ball supply during the game?

At the present perhaps not. Has it been done in the past? Absolutely. It's been reported that some of the Rockies players have admitted it off the record and in locker room talk.

The 3rd inning isn't over and they've committed 4 errors already. Most teams don't commit 4 errors in an entire week. What's the record for most errors in a single game?
4 errors in 3 innings and a grand slam. Sometimes you just deserve to lose.

For the record, the Giants, for all their supposed faults, still leading the NL West and have the fourth best record in all of the NL, this despite not having their best pitching starts so far this year.
Zito = 5.2 ip, 8 runs (5 earned), 0 homer (Giants fall 6-10)
Voggy = 2 ip, 8 runs, (3 earned), 2 homers (Giants fall 3-11)
Cain = 6.1 ip, 6 runs (all earned), 3 homers (Giants win 8-6)
Bum = 4.2 ip, 9 runs (7 earned), 1 homer (Giants fall 9-10)
Timmy = 5 ip, 6 runs (all earned), 1 homer (Giants fall, 2-10)
Team has committed 12 errors in these 5 games. While that adds to the 10 unearned runs, it also created high-stress innings and racked up the pitch count on the starters.
WTB: 2001 Leaf Rookies & Stars Longevity: Ryan Jensen #/25
I never expected that all 5 starters would fall into a funk and struggle simultaneously. Timmy admitted that after he threw the ball into RF, he totally lost it mentally and the rest of his game proved it true. Everyone's got dead eyes and dead arms. It might not be a bad idea to call up a starter from AAA to burn a start so the whole rotation gets a start pushed back.

Run differential now at -5. Fun stuff.

At least the Dodgers have been sucking just as bad if not worse.
Anyways I got tickets for tonight's game. I'm near the ballpark now about to enter. Not expecting much but here goes.
