1960 Racks

Thoughts.
Packs

Guy says they are not fake. But we all know what these are. Also they used different packaging on each of them. And they show all the signs that we know. Also where do you think he got these lables? Some cheap toy lable from the 60s and decided to make these racks with it.

What are yalls thoughts?

Aside from the automatic response that Christmas = fake, that is a mighty beaten and abused header for cards and cellos that are as he says "nm", very fortuitous...

Aside from the red flags you mentioned, it is hard to imagine a company keeping a redemption offer open for four years (check expiration on back - 1964).
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

Nice shiny staples too. With some "extra" staple holes near the right hand one...

    Yep
  • Check out the staple holes below the staple. Seems like it has had a staple there before.

You would think he could do a better job lining up those new staples with the old holes, LOL.

    Horrendous....lol
  • Christmas packs dont equal fake - just not packaged by the actual manufactuer... but in this case, those cards look like they were placed in there from someones personal collection - assuming the sellers. The corners on each of those cards indicate that they have been handled and are not the type of coners that selaed packs usually have. All 4 corners ON each card seems to be touched.

I like it when the seller states that he can imagine that "PSA will holder this pack." Heck, they don't even "holder" legit racks...............

  • Hey y'all.....Christmas Racks are no more than a clever backroom reproduction using less-than-mint cards! DO NOT BUY THESE unless you want some really nice EX to ExMt cards and NO stars (unless they're showing, of course!!!!) Biggest scam ever!!!!!

Someone is still, or until recently was, definitely churning out additional Christmas packs, but my question is whether, when Mark Murphy first started selling them, they were in fact cards acquired from Topps, or the secondary market, and repackaged by a third party for retail distribution by some ( as far as I know ) unknown retail store(s), and if so, when did that occur. This guy claims it was a year end thing. I had never heard that. I have heard at different times the "original" repackaging occurred in the 60s or in the 70s or in the 80s...and of course I think it has recently been an ongoing process. I have seen them for the years 1952 to 1963. Murphy originally did not offer any from 52 or 53.

I would like to know when the first Christmas packs were put together, by whom and for whom. Were they originally a "legitimate" repackaging market effort by someone, or have they been from day one a con effort. In either event they are just repackaged cards, but I think it would be interesting to know their origins from a hobby lore standpoint

"Murphy originally did not offer any from 52 or 53."

I dont think that is true. If I remember correctly he had a 1953 topps With mantle on top being his most expensive one he offered. I think he had a list in SCD with a lot of these or on his web page. But I do remember him having a 1953 Mantle pack.

He may have eventually offered the 53s, but his ads for "complete runs" in SCD originally did not include them. A person by the name of Skip Mathews who apparently partnered with him on these has told me their original purchase did not include the 53s, but that they did later get some of them from the same source. He believed there were no 52s from the original source. He could or would not say who retailed them. He and Murphy did say the original re packager was a "Packing/Toy Co." It was his understanding that the original re packaging occurred in 1982. I have saved emails and letters I received from both of them when inquiring about the ads in SCD. But still have never seen anything more concrete on how, when and where these things first came to be

I can imagine there being an elephant in that pack that grows to the size of a city block when adding water.

I actually just imagined 2 of them
