Newp: 1906 Barber Quarter

I collect mid grade barber quarters, but I have been looking for a nice MS example for my type set. I purchased this one earlier this week:

image

It is in an PCI MS64 slab. What are your thoughts on it? At what grade do you think it would crossover to at PCGS?

That's just a beautiful example of the type. I would have gladly bought this for my own collection, which includes only four Barber quarters. Now brace yourself for the inevitable crowd of people who are going to call it AU58.

Based on the wide range of grade guesses from the scores of GTG posts, which are often a 30-40 point swing/range, I entrust the grade opinion of PCGS (oops - Misread the OP - Doh!) as the coin being a non-slider.

Not to mention the advantage of an in hand inspection/appraisal vs. a picture

Edit as I misread the original post as being a PCGS graded coin -

I like it as a 64 and if rhedden is correct you'll probably make more money selling it as a PCGS 58 for the Everyman competitors.

I think it is PCGS MS63. I just expect a herd of people to say it's AU58 based on the typical response on this board.

Nice looking coin and I think definitely uncirculated.

From the pics 64 seems quite accurate in my opinoin.

What's going on at Liberty's throat, there?

Nice coin with nice toning. I dunno if it'll be a 64 by another service, but I like it.

Old PCI green label? How many digits in the serial number?

AU58 "common date" quarters (although I say the 1906 is under rated) are available in the $200 range where a 63 would be double.. Even the EM Registry Fever hasn't vaulted the common 58s over the 63s.

Semi-keys and keys are a different ball game (see 1907-S et.al.) but most of the P dates are in the $200 range give or take

Lovely toning with nice luster. PCI got it right IMO from those pics. I've seen PCGS 64s with far more distracting marks.

Well! image I'll be the 1st! Grading it by the picture I think it is a 58! That opinion could change very quickly in hand. If there are no luster breaks I think 62 shot 63.

Thanks for the responses. I really like the look of this coin in hand. I would grade it 63 or 64.

To answer some questions: It is in a PCI slab with the gold bordered label (9 digit serial number.)

The mark on the neck is an abrasion, and it looks worse in the photo than it does in hand.

I'll probably send this one in on my next submission. I've never cracked out a coin prior to submitting - I've always done crossovers. Do you think I would do better cracking it out or submitting it for crossover?

I can see it in a PCGS 64 holder. It has that look
and although I hate to grade MS coins by images,
I do not see any rub or circulation marks, so, it's
    not an AU 58.

Attractive coin and it should cross grade for grade, IMHO .

    Hello,

    This is technical/market grade MS58/AU63?
I personally would not place this at MS from these images.

    Best wishes,

Very lovely. I enjoy mid grade barber quarters as well....and probably would have tried to put together a run except for those pesky keys. Always thought about just a date run....which is possible..

Im with the 64 folks. Although hard to tell from the pics if the grey areas on the Liberty Cap and the shield are rub or just toning, I'm wagering that the OP checked the coin well enough before buying to see that it wasn't wear.

    That's a really sweet coin . . .

PM me what you paid for yours. I saw a really nice example up on eBay.

I am guessing all of the small scratches are on the holder.

    I like it! I just got a MS62.

I would say 63/64. Not that I am the best in grading.
Unless that is a scuff mark on Liberty's neck.
    Then a 58!

    Nice coin.

My guess at a grade would be "I like it" and that is as close as I can get with this series.

It looks like an MS-64 to me. There are too many minor marks to grade it any higher, but fields are Mint State, and the eye appeal makes a Choice Mint State piece.
