A newp for the Territorial Gold type set.

Finalized the details this week on this coin from the FUN show. Wass Molitor $50, PCGS AU50, CAC (green).

It's surprising how relatively inexpensive these are compared to the octagonal slugs - one of the last private issues of the California gold rush.

    Nice. Is inexpensiveness really relative? I would never use inexpensive to describe this coin. Spectacular, yes, historic, yes, good investment, yes, cheap, no. However, from the au-50s I've seen, this one certainly looks choice for the grade. Congrats!

    Wow, thats a serious coin. I've never really seen one that nice...usually they are beat up, with the the wear of a VF at best. Most have problems.

    Yours is really, really, nice. Made right here in my adopted hometown!

    I agree with your comment, way cheap compared to slugs.

    Nice find! Mormon territorial gold has rocketed as well. I was. Surprised to see the most common Mormon five in AU was getting over 40 k at auction. Just a year or two earlier I had picked up an AU for which Kagin would not even offer 12 at that time.

    Wow, if you resubmitted that coin today it would without question get an upgrade. The graders today are more sympathetic to weak strikes than they were years ago when it was less appreciated how weak most of the Mormon gold was struck. Parenthetically I find it interesting that Brigham Young's Utah Mint was just someone's house within a block or so of Today's Temple Square just like the first US silver coin, the half disme, was minted in A Philadelphia house that is within a block or two of Liberty Hall.

    When I was growing up, 90% of the ones I saw were so whacked up that cleaning would make them even worse. Which didn't stop it from sometimes happening.imageimage
