    According to Eric Jordan's book:

    2006-W 466,573
    2007-W 690,891
    2008-W 535,000
    2009-W None issued

but that's all he has (book was issued in 2010).

    2011-W 309,927
    2012-W 188,143 (but they're still selling them)

    2011-W numbers in coinupdate.com show 309,135* +100K in the 5 coin set.
I`m not sure if the had any additional sets that included the 2011-w unc.
If not 2011-w could be the new key!

The "Key" to the uncirculated ASEs is the unappreciated 2011-S at 100K. For now, the 2011-W is 2nd, but WILL be surpassed by the 2012-W. Buy all of the 2012-W's you can find in PCGS FS MS70 label. In first strike 70, the 2012-W pop is about one-third of the 2011-S, but sells at 1/4th the price--and the 2011-S is too cheap! image

SUMMARY: The 2012-W should (and soon will) be selling at $150 in MS70 fs, that's a pretty good ROI.

NOTE: I know the OP specified "W," but I'm not sure mint-mark is a distinction the market will recognize when talking "key" among ASEs...

One ASE that has not gotten a lot of ink is the 2012-S proof. A sub 300K mintage is likely, making it significant and a top 5 ASE.

More info can be found here. Though, no mintage for 2011 yet.

The 2000 Coin and Currency set contained an uncirculated West Point minted ASE with only 75,000 struck thus making this the Key.

    Just saying, Larryimage

Did it have the W mint mark.

It bears no mint mark however it was struck at West Point and is an uncirculated issue.

While he's clearly talking about the W mintmark uncirculated, burnished collector coin sold directly by the mint, the OP didn't specify gold, silver or platinum eagles.

    Feb. 12 Mint sales figures

2011 W unc. ASE collector coin, final mintage 309,927

2012 W unc. ASE collector coin, sales so far of 194,135. Mint continues to offer the 2012 individual coin and also offers it in the 2012 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set (XA3).

Looks like the 2012 W will be coming in the as lowboy of the five uncirc W's issued thus far.

Anybody wanna sell a 2009 ASE proof? image

All other ASE minatages, not including 2012

the 2000 ASE from the coin and currency set doesn't bear any distinguishing characteristics, as far as I know. It would have to be recognized either within the set or slabbed, wouldn't it?

PCGS Certifies it as 2000 Millennium Set if received in the original Coin and Currency set.

Correct. The 2000 United States Millennium Coinage and Currency Set included a 2000 D Sacagawea Dollar, 2000 bullion American Silver Eagle and a $1.00 1999 Federal Reserve Note. Mintage for this ASE is included in bullion mintage for the year. Nothing special about the coin, just the packaging. Slabbed, it makes a great gift for the label collector.

Most mint specialty sets include coins that are not unique and only add to the final mintage of the regular issue. Reverse proofs are nice exceptions to this. Once the specialy sets are removed from the mint sealed shipping box by anyone other than a major grading company that is going to give them a special label, the otherwise normal coins are no longer unique to anyone other than the original purchaser of the set.

Thank you. Yes, hence its limited appeal in the marketplace, unfortunately.

I tend to believe that special grading labels drive most sales of the mint's special coin sets.

2012-W SAE's are still available individually at the Mint, $50.95. It was the 11-W that went offline at the end of Dec.

    ..You're missing the 100,000 2011 W's in the 25th Annie sets (mentioned in a post above)...still below 2006

..the 2012 W most likely will be for sale for another year so it will be a while before numbers start talking....

I realize that...and that's why his numbers were off by 100k....actual 11-W mintage is a tad over 400k (309k singles and 100k in the Annie sets)

good point, mint released sales figures quoted do not specify if they include the 100K unc. W ASEs included in the silver ASE 5 coin set.
