Looks good, but I would have left out the "we would have paid way more" bit. Does anyone thinking of reselling not say this?
  • Very impressive. Anyone know who the underbidder was?
  • Just had to have it didn't you TDN? image

Just curious how someone can tell that this is the first coin struck in 1794?

Read the Stacks Bowers description. I don't think we can be certain but the evidence points to it.

I wonder if that is eligible for the "First Strike" label? Of course the box has been opened.

Pretty safe to assume that dropping 8 figures on a coin is predicated on that. image

I wonder if ole Geo Washington handled that coin. Pretty nice.

I think it's a very nice treasure. A little on the pricey side, but a nifty coin nonetheless.

I've often wondered, given this is probably a first-strike specimen (as far as we are able to determine)
why the mint workers didn't select a planchet without the adjustment marks? They took such obvious
care in striking up and preserving the coin otherwise - we'll probably never know.
  • Congratulations to the new owner, what a beautiful coin,"the stuff dreams are made of." I might add that I have done business with Legend but always with George and had never met Laura. I know she can come across as abrasive in print, but when I walked by their booth during a lull and introduced myself I found her nothing like her on line persona, she came across to me as very genuine and most affable.

I think the 1804 PR65 $10 sold for $5 MILL after Legend/Bruce owned it or after unsuccessfully trying to acquire it.

Yes, if ever there was a time to drop the used-car-salesman sales tactics, this would be it.

It was determined that because no others before seen had a plug, that this was a first run, correct TD?. The mirror-quality surfaces would also support the first-struck case. I think it's worthy of the "crown". Especially since the 1933 Saint has become "The Emporer's Clothes". image

Does TDN have a financial interest in this coin?

Read the press release - I would say the answer to that is self evident

I think the Proof 1804 Eagle and Garrett J-1 pattern large cent, both for Mr. Simpson.

so, putting down a nut like that on a coin is unusual. in fact i'm not sure it actually happens because i've never seen coins like this and the whole thing might be a big front to get us little folk to buy coins. but let us put that theory aside for a moment.

i'd expect that you did a little dance or sang a little song or let out a little tourettes or smoething. or maybe just a boring "woo hoo".
because it is hard for me to believe you were silent and stoic.

so what was it? please describe the peak of your excitement. i wanna hear what it was like to win this.

    Thats definitely an interesting description!

I'm curious though, had the screw presses been done away with by the time this coin was made? If not, how would a "die clash" occur?

Some collectors/dealers try to increase the value of a coin through doctoring. Here we have a different approach, a collector who likely increased the value of a coin or at least the excitement about it through detailed research. Very cool.

I don't question the assertion that you would have paid more, I just don't see the point in including that in the release. The acquisition of such a treasure is enough without citing any figures. I realize passion and business intersect, and the release indicates business. I assume that at heart this is more a passion purchase than a business one (although the business one ain't bad)

I don't care if they flip it tomorrow for 10%, bottom line is it takes a lot of guts to fork over $10M for a coin.

I have heard TDN and others say that they would pay to see the Pogue collection, but aside from the Childs 1804 dollar and the 1822 half eagle, I have no idea what is in it ... can anyone shed any light?

It has been said that it is the single greatest US type set ever assembled. I know from my reading that they sucked up most of the great gold pieces in the 1982 Eliasberg sale.

Another way to interpret this is as a "back off" message sent to potential suitors in the near term that think they might get a chance to buy it.

Congrats to Legend on the historic acquisition of a historic coin. Looks to be a shrewd move by folks who make a lot of them.

I would indeed pay to view the Pogues set. It is not just a type set, but a complete set of early US coinage. Not just a complete set, but a set filled with miraculous examples of the issue. I once saw the bust quarter portion of the set at a show - they were amazing. My jaw was on the floor.

Fun to watch this video of the actual action taking place.

<< <i>Fun to watch this video of the actual action taking place. >>

That video illustrates the difference between perception and reality. Laura and I had discussed extensively our strategy for the auction prior to the sale. Once it gets to $5M, if there are other real bidders then we go nuclear to ensure we get the coin. The video shows Laura appearing to jump her own bid when in reality from the first bid over $5M I'm yelling in her ear on the phone to jump the bid. She finally hears me and announces it - after the auctioneer has recognized her for a lower bid. Looked funny, but it wasn't.
