Draped Bust Gold Type!

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
In 2006, I began collecting coins. It all started with a 2006 24k 1 ounce Buffalo. Eventually I purchased one and began looking into other coins. One cool fall day, I remember looking through a newly purchased Red Book and found the Draped Bust gold Half Eagle section. The design was amazing, but then my eyes tracked down the page to the prices! image Wow! Obviously looking at the Mint State prices more than shocked me. Maybe some time in the future I thought.

Fast forward to 2011, I was able to add a choice VF example of a half eagle to my collection. With some patience and luck, I managed to add a better grade early $5 and the rest of the type to my collection. There is a story behind every coin, but I will spare you the details.

Feel free to post your examples!

1807 $2.50 PCGS XF45 CAC. Was PCGS OGH XF40, but was upgraded. (Not by me)
image

1798 $5 PCGS VF35 CAC. (Breen-6428, BD-4, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d with two upper reverse cuds)
image

1800 $5 PCGS AU55 CAC.
image

1799 $10 PCGS AU58 CAC.

Thanks for looking,
Ankur

Love the last two for sure
  • Last coin is worth 27 grand. I am drooling at the fact I would never be able to afford such a coin.

they are all awesome coins, but the 1807 qe and the 1799 eagle are my favorites of the set.

Here are my three. I suppose some might think that I should be upgrading these, but they please me. I too have had a long standing fascination with these coins. I really had to pull some strings (use my wits) to get the quarter and eagle because they were well beyond my budget at the time I acquired them. These coins have never been cheap and least during my collecting lifetime.

1804 quarter eagle, green label AU-50. Nearly all of the examples I've seen of this date have had adjustment marks.

    imageimage

1806 half eagle. I bought this at the Auctions '82 sale that was held before the ANA in Boston that year. It is now in an AU-58 holder.

    imageimage

1799 Eagle. I acquired this at a NENA (New England Numismatic Association) show in Boston well over 20 years ago in a three way trade that involved two two coin dealers. This one is now in an AU-55 holder.

  • My favorite in each of the photo-posts is the last (so far)
Edit: I grade the last one in Bill Jones post a 58 instead of 55. I think that's the only coin that would upgrade.

This didn't fit the territorial type set, but since early error coins are so rare, I really liked this one. Good example of the QA process as these were coming off the screw press one at a time......image

For a young country and the resources they had to work with, these are really quite incredible pieces. Imagine what they would have purchased at the time.

The 1799 in AU58 is my favorite.

In 1975, I began collecting coins, and obtained my first example of the type last year, this coin is in a Genuine-92 holder and was priced as a Fine

If you ask me, it is poor taste to state the value. Since you are a newb, I mean newpimage why don't you edit your post. >>

LOL! There's this thing called the PCGS price guide -- do you think you'd feel better if we all assumed the piece was worth $500?
Ankur by showing such pieces obviously demonstrates that he can afford them. I imagine I would pursue such things too, had I the disposable income to do so.

Gorgeous coins. The designs (both obverse and reverse) are my personal favorite! Here are a few more... one of these days I'm going to pull the trigger on an early $10. I'm content with chasing early $5's for now... still looking for a nice '04 (Large 8 over small 8) at a reasonable price.

Most early gold coins didn't circulate that much. They mostly went from bank to bank in bags. That's a piece in VF is about as low a grade as you will see, and most are EF to AU. The pieces that are badly worn, and I've seen a few were probably some rich guy's pocket piece.
