It's a scan, which normally hides a lot of marks. I'm going to say MS64.

Did the seller not disclose the grade or are you just playing guess the grade?

    65 DMPL?

Edit- ah, I didn't read your last post.

63, huh? But it's definitely DMPL, right?

I once bought one that was in an older small ANACS 63 DMPL holder that was uberfrosty like that. It was also an '81-S, of course.

I'll WAG that the left obverse field is what limited the grade. Looks like micro chatter in front of the forehead/bridge of nose. Scanner images are difficult to interpret.

  • I would be willing to bet the update is going to be returned. I think the pics are orientated just right and small for a reason.

That said I hope you get the gold. I enjoy your posts ats.

In a GTG thread, you guess a 'grade', a numerical grade. Dimple? it just may be a DMPL, but if all you can say is 'not sure of the number (is that new jargon for numerical grade, I must have missed the memo), but looks like a 'dimple', then you really better do alot of learning....you NEED to be able to grade for yourself, or you'll take a beating....and do not just rely on ANY grade a holder says, YOU need to learn to grade....unless you just want 'dimples').

    Now, before you post 'Rule #5 AGAIN;

I don't think this post violates any rules (especially #5). I'm imparting a suggestion to help, and constructive criticism in regard to your referring to the grade as 'the number', so, leave the rules out of it.

    So, lets see:

Rule 1) This is not a public forum. This is a PCGS forum paid for by PCGS and provided for PCGS customers to exchange information regarding collecting US coins. We make the rules this is not a democracy. (not applicable here, I know where I am and how to act accordingly to what forum I'm on...this one is strict)

Rule 2) Anyone posting crude or vulgar pictures or language will no longer be allowed to post. No more warnings. (no vulgarity in my wording or images)

Rule 3) Anyone attacking another poster or making disparaging personal remarks will no longer be allowed to post. No more warnings. (not attacking, just constructive criticism...just what the boards are for, believe it or not)

Rule 4) Anyone making libelous remarks concerning any individual, any company, or any other entity will no longer be allowed to post. No more warnings. (nothing libelous. merely suggesting you ease up on the reigns and learn more about the hobby, like that Seated Lib quarter you thought wasn't even a U.S. coin)

Rule 5) If you have nothing to contribute to an OP then do not post. Snide remarks and other negative comments will result in your losing your ability to post. No more warnings. (nothing snide, just constructive criticism to help, so I AM contributing)

Rule 6) This forum is about US Coins. If your post is not directly related to US Coins then this is the wrong forum. Do not post it or your posting privileges may be removed. (post is about a U.S 'dimple' coin, the coin the OP presented in a GTG)

Rule 7) This is a PCGS forum. Posts promoting or bashing other grading companies or service are not allowed. Those posts will be removed and your posting privileges may be removed as well. (nothing about any other TPG's)

Rule 8) This forum is provided for the education and sharing of information. Not as a personal soapbox. If you want to learn and share information about US Coins you are welcome. (trying to share that you should learn 'the numbers', or the numerical grade....means more than the 'dimple' part...you HAVE to be able to grade on your own and not rely on another's opinion, a TPG's or not....thats why they have a review service)

Rule 9) Your signature may contain multiple images and/or links but must be limited to a single line. If you would like additional advertising space on this site please contact our Advertising Department. Violators will have their posting privileges removed. (not appplicable)

Rule 10) If you don't like any of the rules outlined above see Rule 1. (I know what rule #1 is in place for, so....)

So, don't post that I violated any rules (as you always do when the heat gets turned up), as I have shown, rule by rule, that NONE were violated.

By the way, how's civilwarcoincollector doing???

Lastly, don't say you were permanently banned from the other site, because your last activity was last night at 7:28pm.

Sorry, not trying to derail your thread, AJ...I just think that 'don't know the number....' deserved a response, but a totally rule conforming post. I can't believe that didn't get a PL.....unless there are breaks in the frost that we can't see due to it being a scan, but a chance well taken

    I'll come up with something.

Ok here are quick pics. To me it looks like a lock 64. The mark on the cheek is enhanced by the angle of the light, and is not nearly as pronouced in hand.
The fields are VERY Proof Like with die polish lines and lots of frost. The reverse is AMAZING!
I expect it to go gold at CAC. Fingers crossed! image

  • I think you've got a pretty good case for a 64 ... but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't sticker. I hope it does! image

Marks and lines and an easy date/mint don't merit that much excitement in my book, but hey, I like your passion.

Reverse chatter, right of the wing confirms the MS64 grade.
    The obverse seals it.

Like the luster and overall originality!
    Sweet looking coin.
(Your photo is honest, the first scan, not so much so.)
