Right now, it's just raining, very little wind. It's not too bad now but it's gonna get real nasty here in southern Maryland.

Nothing of note yet. We've had only occasional rain in central Pennsylvania. So far just enough rain to get the ground wet.

Generator and gas cans at the ready.

A-Ok here on the east coast of FL, after two days of wind and rain, but then it only skirted us, as it was centered at least 200 mi off the coast.
Still had monstrous waves at the beach. It is going to be pushing a lot of water when that sucker makes landfall in the NE, our prayers are with you all up there.

I'm on the 32nd floor in my building, have plenty of food, water, wine, soap, etc...... 4 of 6 elevators shut down as of 8pm ET...will ride out unless we are told to leave. Coastal CT here, right across the sound from Montauk Point, NY
My weather station is reporting gusts of 15-20 mph right now and Sandy is hundreds of miles South.
Gutters are clear, plenty of drinking water, canned soups, fuel, chains, bars, mix, etc.
About as prepared as I can get. Anything could happen Sandy may decide to take a more Northerly
track then turn West. I expect to lose power as winds are forecasted to gust up to 75 mph in my area.

Live in brooklyn in a waterfront area.Nothing yet except a few drops of rain.I was at a wedding this afternoon and they made an announcement that some bridges were closing at 7pm.The place emptied out fast.I bought a few packs of batteries and some peanut butter and tuna fish just in case.My son went out and tried to buy some burger king for dinner only to find out that all of the fast food in my area had already closed. In our area its the wind not the rain that worries people.

If you have a UPS for your computer, you can use it to run a 13 watt compact fluorescent (60 watt equilvalent) lamp for several days. Rather than try and run a desktop computer, your UPS can power only your dsl/cable modem and router and a laptop with its own charged battery for several days of short sessions (limited to your laptop's battery capacity)

So far here n coastal CT, nothing but a little wind, no rain, not a drop. My weather station has recorded a maximum gust of 21 mph.
There is actually a break in the clouds and the sun is out. Is there really a hurricane in the Atlantic?

Isle of Wight County, Virginia. About an hour west of Virginia Beach and border's Suffolk, VA.

My house is on nine foot cinder blocks, so flood prone here.

Been raining for two day's and wind is now starting to pick up.

    Currently:

In northern Virginia, heavy steady rain for several hours (over 3 inches since morning). Winds were brisk earlier, but have slowed. Worst here is expected tonight.

I just looked at Dominion Virginia (electric utility) web site, and in my area there are only a handleful of small scale power outages. Further south in Norfolk and Hampton Roads, there are much bigger outages affecting thousands. This is sure to only grow for the next 1 1/2 days. Link to interactive map of Dominion Power outages.

It is storms like this that make me very glad that I live in the Western USA (Colorado and California).

Dealing with earthquakes in California (lots of little ones and during my time living in Calif. very few big ones) is easier than dealing with frequent Hurricanes and NorEasters.

Batten down the hatches and stay safe to all forumites in the Eastern USA that will be affected by Sandy.
  • RichRRichR Posts: 3,913 ✭✭✭✭✭
Normally...I'm 2 blocks from the edge of the East River in Manhattan...but as of right now, the river has creeped about a block closer (and that's after the tide...not the occasional rogue wave...but the actual tide...climbed over a 10-foot seawall and across a waterfront park)!

And my car has been parked farther inland...lest it become a raft!

Big fun for everyone in the Big Apple!

  • Weatherbug reports nearby wind gust of 49mph. The Weather Service says we'll have SUSTAINED winds over 40mph for twelve hours! I'm not letting my son sleep in his room tonight - the prevailing wind forecast then will be blowing the tree outside towards his windows.

Hell no I won't! Rather than staying stranded in Zurich, I booked flights and trains and got to Osnabrueck this afternoon. Might as well make the most of it. Will sit through the Kuenker sales tomorrow and then head back to Zurich. With any luck, CJ and I will get to take Aki out for pasta on Wednesday night!

Well now we have a rooftop huge tower crane that has buckled, partially collapsed and has its boom and cab actually dangling about 900 feet about 57 Street in midtown Manhattan, near Central Park! Try fixing something like that in gale force winds!
