The rain, for now, has stopped, the wind is a popcorn f*rt, but all the leaves are off the trees, and it's actually much warmer now. The only signs we had a 'blustery' day was street signs, for sale signs, trash barrels, tree branches, and the uprooted tree every street seems to have. It was being covered on local TV all day, but since the temp rose (62 deg), wind died, rain stopped, it's as if it's all over. IF it is finito, the Boston area got spared...was starting to sound like a train going by every few minutes, shook the house a few times....but wasn't devestating in any real way....

(this is before the 11pm news, when I find out the rest of the state is a nightmare)
    I'll come up with something.

Heavy rain (or snow depending on exact location) and 40-60 mph winds here in WV. We still have our power although people are starting to lose it in our area.

Still have power in York PA. Thought it would be a lot worse since the storm was tracking right over our location. My best wishes to the others that are getting hit the worst. I've been watching TWC for a while now, and I see our friends in NYC are getting some serious flooding. Good luck to all.

In east central Pennsylvania the lights went off once for an instant. The strongest winds were overnight. Less rain fell than expected.

We'll be back to normal schedules on Wednesday.

My power in central Maryland came on around 9:50 am this morning. I was sure it would be out longer, but glad it wasn't. I think NY and New England got it much worse than we did down this way. Hope everyone is safe.

Wow, such devastation! My heart goes out to all of you in the east.

My hubby and his fellow lineman buddies here at Southern California Edison are all on stand-by waiting to hear if/when they will be sent to the east coast to help restore power. We will know later today who's going - so help from around the country is on its way!

I was in Detroit for the WS and all you could see on the highways were line trucks heading south.

Laura just emailed me and said they survived but the area is completely messed up. Legend will be closed til Thursday while they deal with loss of power, flooding and debris.

Power has been out since 5:30 PM yesterday here on the Maine coast. Hopefully it will be restored later today.

The weather now is calm and bright, with no more wind or rain. Not much storm damage, thankfully, and minimal cleanup to do.

Our thoughts are with those who took a more direct hit.

Maybe it's a coincidence, but out here in Reno, NV (yes, RENO!) I saw a flatbed full of power station transformers pull into air freight at the airport last night around 7:30.

Sort of in the same vein, there was a convoy of about 25 power company bucket trucks eastbound on I 80 at 730a this morning in Iowa.

Trees down everywhere here in suburban Boston, including a few that fell across the road taking electrical wires with them. Power has been out since yesterday afternoon, and I'm thinking it's going to be another day or so before they get it up and running.
  • South shore Long Island here. By Sunrise Highway. Some rain, some wind. Was it hurricane or was it not? Post-tropical something or other at landfall? Like last year - very mild. Media frenzy in any event, at least around here. Sorry for those with true losses - I'm sure there are many. Its a fairly sunny day here, breezy. Am I in a bubble?

    Best wishes,

Power outages in the 'general' Boston area are sporadic, but outside the city, lot's of downed trees and telephone poles/wires on the street. Saw one pole, right down the street.....snapped in half, bottom half rolled into street, the top half is still connected (has the transformer on it) and it's still delivering power...needs to be disconnected and a new pole, but it's crazy that it's still working as normal, while it's just dangling there).

In my town, just 8 mi outside Boston, I it turns out that we are one of the few neighborhoods that has power. Bentley and Babson colleges are here, and they are operating on their own mini 'power plants'...was worse than I originally thought, as it wasn't that bad for us, in the house, and on this section of the street. It's like those houses that JUST get missed by a tornado, but unfortunately, their neighbor's gets leveled to the ground. We must have been in 'the right place at the right time' for this one. Turned out alot worse outside my immediate area than I thought, being sheltered in the right place, and all.
    I'll come up with something.

    NYC update...

LaGuardia Airport is still under water, but JFK is hoping to be back in service tomorrow (maybe).

The subway tunnels have all been flooded with SALT water that likely shorted out the electrical systems and signals...possible out anywhere from 5-10 days.

The East River met the Hudson River at the World Trade Center site and then decided to stay awhile...the Army Corps is trying to figure out how to pump out the new WTC Memorial pools!

And for all those who know Manhattan...imagine a 3to 4-foot tide rolling inland about a block or two around the perimeter of the southern portion of the island...because that's what happened at about 9:00 last night...taking all the parked cars with it!

And we're blacked out south of 29th Street, which is about half the island.

I'm in rural MD and we dodged it, we are now at 38 hours of continuous rainfall, but only modest damage. Much of the area here is below sea level, if we had gotten the 13 foot surge it would have been devastating. There's supposed to be a secondary surge up the Chesapeake this afternoon and DC is supposed to get more flooding from it, but I think we're good. I have several nieces and nephews dealing with 3 feet of snow in WV but my heart goes out to NJ/NY (and I generally don't even like those people). image

North central Jersey, about 15 miles from CAC. Trees down everywhere. Big ones. Some on powerlines, some on cars, and some on houses. Snafu? Absolutely. Tarfu? Yes indeed. Fubar? No!

We were fortunate in Northeastern Penna. The brunt of the hurricane went north and south of us. Lots of power outages and some flooding in low lying areas but that is about it. I am the only one on my street with power, thanks to a Generac 25K watt generator I had installed a year ago after going 8 days without power or water after a mini tornado came through our area in Sept., 2011.
Called njcoincrank earlier today to make sure his dog, Jethro, was alright.

Lots of help is on its way - Edison is sending most of their lineman crews right away. My hubby says they'll be gone 3-4 weeks building new power lines and poles, repairing and replacing transformers, etc.

No power here in coastal CT, neighbor has a generator and internet, just thought I would check in
with my coin peeps. Power went down about 3 a.m. this morning, glad I prepared with fuel, food, batteries, chains, mix, and water. What I'm experiencing is nothing compared to what NJ and NY folks are going through. Lets not forget those affected by the blizzard on the backside
of Sandy. God bless them, God bless us all.
    Scott

A view from across the street, main reason we lost power. Spent most of the day helping out.
Unemployed so it felt good to help out and make a difference. Glad I bought xtra bars and chains.

We are in the dark and cold, but are fine. Our home did not flood. However, much of the town is/was underwater or washed away. We lost several trees that were 80-100 feet each. They were oak trees that fell in our back woods. The root ball is taller than me (I am 6-4). Trees are down everywhere, roads are blocked, much of southeast CT is without power and may stay like this for another week. The four southern counties in the state have been declared a Federal disaster area. Our girls have been out of school all week, but will have a partial day tomorrow. Much of the coast was under a mandatory evacuation, but we were not. We still have the car packed with bug out bags. It is in the 40s outside and in the upper 50s in the house. I am sitting in the dark tapping away on my iPhone. Parts of NJ, NY and MD were hit as badly or worse than us.

Yes you seem to be in a bubble. You are lucky. This from my ex wife in Lindenhurst, NY. South Shore Long Island where water came all the way past the Montauk Hwy. It has never come that far before even during the worst Hurricanes. Her story is sad and she will be competing for housing with thousands of others.

From the text she sent me today. This is a picture she snapped of her street.

Three to four feet of water in the house, five in garage. Someone elses boat stuck in the side of my house. Oil tank in my front yard. My house is inhabitable. Police at ends of our streets guarding to help prevent looting. Ninety percent of island without power. (her husband Howie works for the electric company) No phone service, sparodic cell service. People scrambling to find food in few places open. Showering at one friends who has water, sleeping at anothers. Kola (her dog) back in boarding place. Howie mandated at work (electric company) and living there. Please pass on to mark (our son) and your famiy. Dont know when I can contact again.

Legend closed til at least Sunday. Laura now homeless as her building was condemned. No banking, no email, no post office - all the things we take for granted.
  • A friend of mine is on the FD back east and they had to sit helpless and watch this happen in Queens since they couldn't move any apparatus in. As these pictures get out it looks much worse for everyone out there.

As Manhattan is usually the first to have utilities restored after any weather event...it really says something that the southern half of the island is still blacked out 3 days after the event.

The entire area really got whalloped this time...and the $$$ involved in fixing all the damage is going to be huge! Every house burned down in that photo is easily worth $600k or more...and that doesn't even factor in the rest of Long Island and New Jersey. All that real estate is also premium priced.

And, on another note, re that Queens fire...that is the same EXACT neighborhood that had a large jet crash into it not long after 9/11 (it's quite close to JFK Airport)...so talk about just extremely bad luck all around for these people!

SCE Press Release: SCE Personnel and equipment were loaded onto several planes, including this C-17, and they flew out of the fog at March AFB this morning en route to NY to help restore power to the millions of ConEd customers who lost it during Superstorm Sandy.

Can't say Thank You enough to the SCE crews -- AND their supportive families -- for stepping in to help in this time of crisis.

Link to photo gallery of today's departure from March AFB: SCE Leaves for NY

And this is a picture of a charter plane filled with Southern California Edison guys on their way to White Plains, New York, to help restore power!! My hubby didn't end up going because his district held their crews back to fill in for the districts whose crews are going back east.

I agree. My friends in Long Beach, NY, my home town (a south shore barrier island not far from Queens), report the ocean and bay converging, flooded canals with cars and boats afloat in streets, the entire town deep in sand, and large parts of the boardwalk destroyed.

    Tragic.

  • Hi all, I lost power Monday nite 8:45pm, along with running water. Spent Tuesday and Wednesay at my place on the 32nd floor. After running out of ice, drinking water, food, running up and down 32 flights (I have two dogs) and losing what was left in the fridge I relocated to my girlfriend's place a block away. No electricity but running water. Spent Wednesday night there and found a hotel vacancy for today and tomorrow which is where I am now. Electricity might be on in my building effective 11pm Saturday night.

Monday night when Sandy hit my bedroom window lock broke and attached is what we heard for the night. We slept in the living room.

It's really bad in some area's of NNJ & NYC as I've heard from a couple friends it's like The Walking Dead w/o the Zombies.

Since all the business are closed there's looting occurring.

My one friend needed to get out as she has two little girls and no heat, hot water, or electric...

Her brother had to get her as someone siphoned the gasoline out of her tank image

  • I finally heard from a good friend in NJ and he was told his power may not be back until 12/1!!

The storm's impacts in eastern Pennsylania were sporadic. Some areas were lucky while others were hard hit. My immediate area got off easy. Extensive areas lost power to the east, south, west and north of where I reside. Our lights flickered once but never went out. On Tuesday morning 400,000 Pennsylvania Power & Light customers were without service. That was reduced to 280,000 by Wednesday morning. Conditions presently vary from "business as usual" to continuing blackouts.

We're seeing news reports of long gas lines in the Poconos - that is just thirty miles away. Here there is no incentive to top off the gas tank as prices have dropped below $3.50 and continue to fall.

I am one of the lucky few in Orange County, NY. My house was damaged as well. But only minor damage.

About half of our county was without power, less now.

But we have a new problem. Today we have virtually run out of gasoline throughout the county! Hordes of New Jersey car owners converged on our county and bought up all of our gasoline here.

Kerosene is out, propane is almost out and only heating fuel is still around.

I was going to buy a generator that uses gasoline but instead will get one after we hook up with natural gas.

I may also buy an old fashioned pot belly wood burning stove so that i can have heat and yet boil some water for a sponge bath if i need to.

This is in spite of already owning a pellet stove. I happen to love my pellet stove but it needs electricity to run. That's the only drawback!

Was once without power for 11 days during the Spokane ice storm - in 10 degree weather. I highly recommend a GenTrans - gas or natural gas.

TDN speaks the truth----one year ago last Sept., went without power or water for 8 days, courtesy of Hurricane Irene. Two weeks later bought a generac 25000W unit, had it installed and hooked up to my gas line---no problems since.

I lost electricity for about 15 hours, from Monday evening to Tuesday morning. I snuggled with my dog, and pretended it was like camping without the bugs.

However, the damage done to so many places in the tri-state area is heart-breaking. I grew up in Jersey, went to school here, and lived most of my life either here or in Manhattan. Like many families here, we vacation at the Jersey shore. I know Belmar, Point Pleasant Beach, LBI, Atlantic City, Ocean City (NJ, not MD), Wildwood, Cape May. All those places. All those lives. Just so sad.

I grew up in northern NJ. Bergen County, in fact. I know of the Hackensack River and Moonachie. I know of Pompton Lakes. Poor Hoboken. Just so sad. And those places outside NJ: lower Manhattan, Breezy Point (Queens), Long Island.

    And so many more places...

Ugh. Those poor people. Those lives. So sad.

I was one of the lucky ones. House made it thru the storm with no major problems. My office has been closed all week without power, and some wind damaged. With the exception of the unexected week off all ok. Some of my co-workers not so lucky, trees on some houses, no power, and water. Most of our shore homes we still don't know, can't get there yet. Thanks to everyone's nice comments.
  • Doing fine in Gettysburg, PA. We saw wind gusts over 50 mph Monday night, lost electricity for 20 hours through Tuesday afternoon, and lost a few small trees. As another member wrote, around us was bad, but nothing terrible in Adams county. Add it all up, pretty minor compared to areas both east and west of us - we were the lucky ones, and what we had was bad. It's all relative this time around...
