AU-58+ -- Anyone upgrading their slider set to the new grade level?

Top AU58 is no longer top AU grade.

Who's upgrading to the plus?

    OK - I'll bite.

What is the process for determining if a pile of AU 58's qualify for the plus?

Can we assume an AU58+ is the same as an AU59?

    I couldn't pass up a 58+ a few months ago,
even though I wasn't searching for one.

I was looking at Heritage Live for SLQ's to
upgrade my set, and a nice 1930-P in 58+
was just smiling at me... Had to take her home !!

I can think of at least four of the PCGS/CAC AU-58 coins in my set that get mighty scarce in MS. There are no PCGS AU-58+ examples for any of them.

I'll submit them in Baltimore next month.

No it has been stated many times MS69 and MS70 coins are not eligible for + grades.

And it has been proven already that in some cases coins going for the AU58+ can and do end up as MS coins.

No, that would be the same as assuming an MS65+ is the same as MS66.

No. There's a big difference. PCGS doesn't use the AU59 grade while they do use the MS66 grade. An MS65+ can be considered to be an MS65.5 since it's half way to the next higher grade just as an AU58+ can be considered an AU59 which is half way to the next higher grade above AU58.

True as CAC doesn't consider the + when stickering...

So a AU58+ is just being reviewed for being a solid AU58.

Don't believe in upgrades. Buy the coin you like in the first place.

Every time you buy or sell a coin, there's a minimum of a 10% of the selling price (could be quite a bit more) that is going into someone else's pocket.

So you lose this fee when you bought your first coin, again on the second coin, and a third time when you sell the first coin. If you bought a nice coin in the first place and have luck timing the market, you can still make money, but for most of us, that's the exception, not the rule.

I rarely resubmit either, for similar reasons. I think too many people get so hung up with the marketing, that they lose sight of the fact that they are buying / selling the coin.

But it was also stated many times that 2009 UHRs would not be designated PL, that no-grades would not be given a details grade, that no-grades would not be holdered, that plus grades would not be given, etc.

I guess I'm just saying that things change and maybe at some future date there will be ......... MS69+, MS71s? Who knows.

Who Knows maybe it's all aimed to get us to accept the computer grading 100 point scale that was discussed years ago.

<< <i>Can we assume an AU58+ is the same as an AU59? >>

Doesn't the "+" indicate a coin which is in the top 30% for "the grade"? Meaning a "high end" AU58?

As long as they don't use the AU59 grade, the next higher grade is MS60 so it could mean a 58+, 59, or 59+. This is just speculation on my part for discussion purposes of course.
