How would you tie up $7500 now?

I have 7500 i want to tie up for a while, my first thought was just to buy some common raw morgans or other 90 percent. My son thinks a MRAD and a sako 42 would be a good place to tie it up but i think we have that area more than covered. The wife thinks a trip and a new sofa is what the money should be spent on.

I do not have any gold bullion or coins to speak of at this time but do have a few hundred ounces of silver. If feel that most of my coins are still well below what i have in them ( proof liberty v-nickels and proof shield nickels plus an aasortment of slabbed coins from proof MPL's to certified morgans.

I do not forsee needing this money anytime in the next few years but if i dd i would like to get the cash out in a short period of time.

I'd say bullion of you choosing is a safe bet, gold or silver.

Loan the money out at 25%.And do it at small amounts.
  • I would say 2 coins like the 1871-CC and 1872-CC dollars in F-12 condition. The total up to almost 8000$ but are good coins to own. Or you could go for a 1913-S quarter in VF-20 for around 7500$ also a really good coin. All 3 coins have done very well based on the PCGS price guide on a period of more than 10 years.

Another would be a 1804 quarter in about VG-10. Go for a graded coin easier to sell when you will require the money. A 1793 1/2 cent in VG-10 would also do well over time and so would a 1804 1 cent in VF-20.

Up to you to make a choice me I would go for the 1793 1/2 cent and the dollars 1st but hey that is me....all the mentioned coins are really good so I don't see you losing money. They are ALL key dates most any collector would like to own!!!

The BS with bullion is you have to pay like 50% capital gains taxes (In Canada that is the case) once you sell that is way to much a loss for me I rather sell a coin in the ''shadows'' of the coin field and pocket all the money.

Plus bullion swings every day and over the pas year has not really made much ground...silver is always around 30$ +- and gold around 1700$ +- . I would skip this option till gold gets back down and silver as well.

I still think Apple has the potential to go above $700/share again so I'd consider that.

But if we're talking strictly coins, then bullion might not be a bad bet for the short run.
  • BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,851 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Hmmmmm.

I'm not so sure about the sofa, but taking a trip with your family would produce more memories than a pile of bullion. With a trip, it would pretty much be spent and gone, but kids are only around for a few short years.

The MRAD isn't such a bad idea though!
  • Or comic books are doing very very well also like say a Hulk #1 or a X-Men #1 graded by CGC. Those will do well for sure + super easy to sell. Or a copy of Avengers #1 (with the new movie this one is only going up and up)!!! But be picky go only for one without any restoration and with WHITE PAGES only!!! Or a lower grade Amazing Fantasy #15 the 1st appearance of Spider-Man can't go wrong there...considered the #1 silver age comic book....again not a restored copy or one not having white pages.

If you love baseball and Mickey Mantle go for a high grade 1951 Bowman of his rookie graded only by PSA (probably could get a nice PSA 7)....to me this option has the cool factor as well as American history written all over it. BUT DO NOT expect this card to go up in value compared to the coins and comics I have mentioned. Or you could buy a lower grade of his FAMOUS (Probably one of the top 5 most important baseball cards of all time and for sure the most important post war card ever) 1952 topps rookie card graded by PSA (card #311).

I would not buy numismatic coins if I even suspect that I might need the money in a hurry. Keep emergency funds separate from hobby-related money.

Well, in that case, he should spend most of the money on "wine and loose wimmen" and save some for the divorce lawyer.

    Seated dime(s)

If you get something in the Civil war era from Philly or something in the early 1870s from CC, you can get a single coin for that. And it's not gonna be a real high grade coin either.

A sofa and a weekend trip with the wife and spend the rest on American Gold eagles. That way everyone is happy and you will eventually get back the money you spent on the Sofa and the weekend.

Pay yourself a treat with your son...buy a sofa for like a 1000$ and give her 500$ spending cash (+take her out to a nice restaurant and perhaps a show and don't for get some flowers) and use 6000$ on your hobby...everyone wins and no one feels left out + you may get lucky!!!

Buy 800 shares of BAC and hold them for at least three years (automatically reinvesting the currently miniscule dividends).

You and your wife will both be thrilled with the result.

I'm with AMRC (and Solomon: split the baby). Buy two one-ounce gold eagles, and spend the rest on a sofa or vacation. Let the wife choose which. It is half a loaf. The optimist might say it is the best of both worlds, while saving some for a rainy day. If you want to include the kid, maybe $200 for him/her to blow on video games or gadgets whatever his/her safe vices are. If buying two eagles doesn't leave enough for the other items, subtract one or downsize one.

Given the circumstance, buying a numismatic coin for $7500, would seem a foolish thing to do. During the next financial argument, the wife will be sure to bring up a $7500 coin purchase.

Boys will buy toys that depreciate, and that's no fun. (okay, so it is)
It's a lot harder to break in a new couch than an old wife. (get her the couch and hide the remote)
You should still have enough to get some gold eagles and take a small trip in to town for a Happy Meal.

I'm going to start coming here for relationship advice. image

We are taking the trailer to the Texas Nascar race in October, how can you possibly top that vacation. lol

I lost 1000 bucks on the last 1893 S morgan i bought years ago.

I think it will be spent on 90 percent will a little gold added for color, but i am going to wait until the 10th of Oct. to buy. I might be able to add another 3500 to it if she hates the rolex.

I'd go to Cabo and fish every day for a week. A guy recently landed a pending world record 427 lb. yellow fin tuna there.

This. I recently returned from a three week trip to Northern Greece and Turkey. Far more interesting and memorable than any coin I've purchased in the forty plus years I have been in the hobby.

I would think a trip with the family, or maybe a anonymous donation to a local charity in which you could see the benefits immediately!

That's the idea behind keeping it local. Donate to send some scouts or Girl Scouts to camp, or create a scholarship for YN to attend summer seminar at ANA. Make a difference in a few individuals.

Or send it to the wounded warrior project!

  • I assume your post is soliciting answers dealing with numismatics. In that case, a PF Walker and/or PF Mercury collection seems reasonable. I wouldn't suggest anything I wouldn't buy or be buying myself. A nice early US gold coin in AU would probably have little to no downside.

    Good luck.
