The Giants did get a huge gift in a bad strike call in the 6th though.
With 2 on and no one out, Cain delivered an outside pitch to Hanigan on a full count that got wrongly called a strike by the umpire, and Posey fired over to 3rd to catch Bruce stealing. Instead of bases loaded, nobody out, it was suddenly 2 outs, man on 2nd. Boch knew that Cain was out of gas, so he brought Kontos in, who induced a grounder for an out to end the inning.
If Kontos came in with the bases loaded, who knows what would have happened?

So which team is preferable as an opponent in the NCLS? The Cardinals or the Nationals?
Further, and looking ahead, which of the remaining AL teams (Tigers, NYY or Baltimore) would be the preferred WS opponent for the Giants?
P.S. On the way into work this morning I was listening to Armstrong and Getty and they mentioned that from a video of the Giants celebrating their win yesterday that it appears that Buster Posey does not care for Tim Lincecum (the video supposedly showed TL joyously approaching BP to celebrate and BP turning away, giving TL a cold shoulder and walking away from him).
A celebration of winning a series 3-2 after being down 0-2 would seem to be a situation where happiness and joy would overcome most any personal dislike between players. If BP does not care for TL the source of same must be fairly significant to manifest itself the way A&G described it this morning.
Not every player likes every other player on a sports team and rightly so given human nature being what it is. The best outcome is for any dislikes to be left at the clubhouse door on game day in order to have a unified team effort on the field.

At 0:34, you see Posey put his hand out to MadBum, who pretends to eignore it and keeps walking with a smirk, followed by Affeldt who also does the same. Posey then stands there alone, holding his hand out looking for anything, then Cain, Mota, and Gardner come in and give Posey some love. At around 0:45, Cain's giving Posey a hug when Timmy walks up, and gets a hand-clasp and a hug from Posey as Arias waits patiently.
Posey admits that he avoids any unnecessary scrums on the field due to his foot, so you won't see him jumping into anyone's arms like he did in 2010. You'll also notice that the Giants outfield trio don't do their jump-bump anymore, probably for similar reasons: avoiding freak injuries.
However, I have heard the rumor that Posey and Lincecum have issues with each other, allegedly centering around Posey being more business than party, and Lincecum being more party than business.
After watching the video clip you posted I do not see what they A&G are talking about either (unless they a referring to another video clip). Whole lot of nothing.
BTW. I bet Posey has no problem finding a date and would not have any such problem even if he was working as cashier at the local grocery store.
WOW! Cards had a pretty amazing comeback, down 2 runs with 2 outs in the top of the 9th, and scored 4 times to win.
So, Giants vs Cards. Game 1 in SF on Sunday.
Giants split their series vs the Cards this year, 3 to 3.
May 16 = Bumgarner looses to Garcia, 1-4. May 17 = Cain defeats Wainwright, 7-5.
August 6 = Cain loses to Westbrook, 2-8. August 7 = Zito beats Lynn 4-2. August 8 = Voggy beats Kelly 15-0. August 9 = Bumgarner looses to Wainwright 1-3.
Jaime Garcia owns the Giants, and he's out for the year. Giants had trouble vs Westbrook earlier in the year, and he's not active.
The Rotation:
in SF Game 1: Bumgarner (on 6 days rest) Game 2: Vogelsong (on 5 days rest)
@ STL Game 3: Cain (on 5 days rest) Game 4: ??? (Lincecum or Zito, both on 7 days rest)
On an under-the-radar move, the Giants reinstated (instead of released) Melky Cabrera and outrighted Justin Christian and Shane Loux to Fresno.
Giants could have simply released Melky and been done with him. The fact that they held on to him makes me wonder if they're going to see if he wants to come back at a discount.
good luck, looking forward to the series from a Cards fan here.....

I wonder how many times Cueto has been in his wind-up with a batter calling time? With his delivery one would think he'd have learned to follow through. Scutaro did him in for the series. I like conspiracy theories.
No changes in the 25 man roster for the NLCS, and the same lineup we've been seeing.
As for the Lincecum / Zito question, Boch says that Timmy's available out of the pen in case of emergency.
Today's Game 1 lineup, via my Giants rookie card collection:
Bum's gotta dig deep and find something extra. He's gassed, and it's obvious. He hit a wall late in August, and hasn't finished the 5th inning in 4 out of his last 7 games.
Not feeling good about this game. Cards are hot, Giants escaped with a win the last game. if Rolen didn't swing and miss that last pitch he would've homered or doubled. Romo was that out of gas.
Every Bay Area team as embarrassed themselves this weekend. From Stanford to the Raiders to the 49ers humiliating themeslves at home as we speak this weekend like last weekend has been a turd. I don't see the baseball Giants breaking that trend.
Oh yeah, and Bumgarner at this point in time couldn't pitch a quality start for the life of him.

Mojo? More like toxic stank. Quarantine that whole area by Candlestick and maybe it won't make it 5 miles north.

Too late. The toxic stank of sucking made its way from Candlestick to the north. It's the 4th inning and MadBomb is getting lit up like a Christmas tree. They score 6 before the Giants got a hit.
And the Giants have MadBomb signed for how many more years?
It's as if the Giants and 49ers are trying to out suck one another.

It's official...the doubleheader suckfest is in the books. The baseball Giants made it close enough to not be a blowout but both the Niners and Giants managed to embarrass themselves in front of a national TV audience. This weekend is feeling a lot like all the weekends did between 2004-2009 except in those years the teams embarrassed themselves only on regional TV coverage.
Last year I said the Giants should've resigned Beltran. After watching him this postseason I've changed my opinion. They really should've resigned Beltran.
When Voggy pitches tomorrow, I don't know if he'll get blown up for a half dozen runs in 3 innings. He could but if he doesn't my bet is he gets Cain'd.
Who's pitching for the Cards tomorrow? Is it Carpenter? Yep, the Giants are screwed.

<< <i>Last year I said the Giants should've resigned Beltran. After watching him this postseason I've changed my opinion. They really should've resigned Beltran. >>
You really think he would have signed? He said that in order for him to re-sign with the Giants, they'd need to sign a big bat. He snorted at the Melky and Pagan trades and said "Good start", then signed with the Cards.
He never seemed happy here anyway. TV highlights show him ignoring his celebrating teammates and holding a perpetual surly expression on his face during games. NY fans called him a mercenary with no passion. I agree. He had no comradery with the other Giants players, probably because he knew he wouldn't be staying long. It didn't suit his interests.
It does appear that Bumgarner's role as a starter might be changing in this series. It appears that there's some talk of Lincecum and Zito getting Games 4 and (if necessary) 5.
Plus, looking at the box score, every Giants starting position player got a hit... except for Posey and Panda. Both went 0-fer with a walk.
<< <i>Last year I said the Giants should've resigned Beltran. After watching him this postseason I've changed my opinion. They really should've resigned Beltran. >>

I might be inaccurate but I recall that the Giants didn't ever attempt to resign him at all. They automatically assumed he was going to be too expensive and never even made him any type of offer. He eventually signed with the Cards for much less than everybody expected him to be seeking. I remember his statement about signing the other big bat. At that time the media assumed the Giants were going after Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols and I took his statement as an indirect method of persuading the Giants management to get a bit more aggressive with landing a high profile free agent. Despite that I still believed he would have resigned with the Giants if they made him a competitive offer.
Beltran has been referred to as a mercenary ever since his days in Houston. He always looks surly and unemotional but I'm sure that's just his persona. He was that way with the Mets and Giants and seems to be that same way with the Cards. If he stayed with the Giants he probably wouldn't be a contender for the Willie Mac award but the team could definitely use his bat.
Follow me on Twitter @wtcgroup Authorized dealer for PCGS, PCGS Currency, NGC, NCS, PMG, CAC. Member of the PNG, ANA. Member dealer of CoinPlex and CCE/FACTS as "CH5"
Well, Beltran's not a Giant, so there's no point fussing over that anymore.
Giants aren't dead yet. They proved that when they won 3 straight "eliminate the Giants" games in an enemy park and advanced to the NLCS.
If the Giants can get a win behind Voggy tonight, they stand a good shot in StL. Giants have been a lot better on the road than at home during the past few months.
Beltran is a primma donna...the Giants are better off without him.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Today's Game 2 lineup, via my Giants rookie card collection:
Vogelsong pitched to avoid elimination in Game 3 of the NLDS and did his job. He won't have as much pressure on him today, though the stage is bigger, and the Giants are look at him to stop this skid of post-season home losses at 3 games.
Giants win tonight, it becomes a "best of 5" series, with Cards getting home-field advantage vs a dangerous road team in the Giants. Giants lose tonight, then, well, we'll deal with that later.
Either way, this could be the Giants last home game of the year. Better to go to StL tied at 1 a piece, than down 0-2.
Spent all day on the road in Dodger country and finally stepping on a plane now to head home so I didn't catch a single second of the game. But if not watching will make them win games I'm all for it. I'll gladly take one for the team and not watch any more games this season.
I haven't seen the Scutaro video yet but it sounds like a dirty hit. If he stayed in the game afterwards and got a hit that could be a good sign.
Ribs? Too impersonal. I prefer skull.

Just saw the Scutaro footage on the news. That wasn't a slide as he wasn't even trying for the bag. That was a tackle.
Follow me on Twitter @wtcgroup Authorized dealer for PCGS, PCGS Currency, NGC, NCS, PMG, CAC. Member of the PNG, ANA. Member dealer of CoinPlex and CCE/FACTS as "CH5"
I didn't know you could be over and beyond the bag?
Scutaro was in a tough position and not able to cross second to avoid him. Still it doesn't give a free pass to take a player out with a stunt like that.
When was the last time interference was called on a play like that?
Maybe Holliday will get a cleat to wrist or the face next time he does that? >>
I was referring to Holliday being nowhere near the bag. Castro was even further away than Scutaro. But yes it does get called sometimes. Just not very often. This was deemed clean by most people (even some within the Twins) as the result of Nishioka being "near the bag". Though hilljack-Swisher started his slide at the bag. That should be illegal, but it's just one of those things...and yes Holiday and Swisher should wear one. Taking out someone's knee is career ending material so anyone who engages in that gets what they deserve. Whether it's a simple back-pelting or throwing at a gased-up head in Holliday's case, or going Ty Cobb on one of their infielders spikes high. Unfortunately St Louis's middle infielders are replacement level stiffs so losing one of them for another replacement level stiff isn't really of much consequence. Take out Craig or Freese or go Scott Cousins on Yadi at the plate...even if it's late. Aim for his moronic neck tat.
It was an aggressive but clean play, and the officials agreed... he didn't go outside the path and crossed the bag with his leg. Holliday was merely doing his job breaking up the DP and unfortuantely Scutaro's leg became entangled. If Scutaro had leapt over him like most others in that situation would do, then we wouldn't be having this discussion. Holliday had no ill intent against Scutaro. I would hope that the ump will warn both sides about retribution and escalation right off. This was an accident...but any planned retribution won't be.
A reckless "accident." Holliday's intent was probably not "I'm going to hurt this guy and knock him out of the game", but based on how he slid, it was probably "I'm going to make as much contact with this guy as I can and see what happens."
<< <i>I might be inaccurate but I recall that the Giants didn't ever attempt to resign him at all. They automatically assumed he was going to be too expensive and never even made him any type of offer. >>
According to Bobby Evans:
"We talked in dollars and years, but ultimately the timing was not right. They wanted to wait and feel out the market, and we needed to execute business. All I can speculate is that Lozano (Beltran's agent) didn't convey the conversations to (Beltran)."
Today's Game 3 lineup, via my Giants rookie card collection:
Cain in enemy territory, where he's not always his best. He pitched well in Cinci though, but there's always the threat of the Giants offense getting shutdown again, as it seems to be a very finicky machine.
Blanco's been solid during this post-season, and that's vital. Curiously, in the 5 games of the NLDS, Blanco hit .286/.375/.571. in 2 games of the NLCS, he's hit .286/.375/.571.
<<A reckless "accident." Holliday's intent was probably not "I'm going to hurt this guy and knock him out of the game", but based on how he slid, it was probably "I'm going to make as much contact with this guy as I can and see what happens.">>
Um... it's called "breaking up the double play" for a reason. Welcome to the majors. This isn't Little League. To hear the Giants fans whine about it, you'd think that Holliday stomped on him, he had a compound fracture and was near death.
<<Official diagnoses (sic) for Scutaro is "left hip muscle strain." Looks like they're taking this day to day.>>
Translation-his butt hurts. He had no problems hitting and running bases later on. And I'm sure it does hurt; he took a good whack there...might even have *gasp* a bruise... but like I said, welcome to the bigs. I suppose he will have time for Mommy to rub some lotion on it when he's at home watching the World Series.

Plus, looking at the box score, every Giants starting position player got a hit... except for Posey and Panda. Both went 0-fer with a walk.

Good to see the Giants finally win a game in SF.
Not good to see Holliday injure Scutaro. No broken bones, but MRI results still pending.
I'm a little surprised that Holliday didn't get on in the ribs. We still may see that in StL though.

I haven't seen the Scutaro video yet but it sounds like a dirty hit. If he stayed in the game afterwards and got a hit that could be a good sign.
Ribs? Too impersonal. I prefer skull.

Again, with 3 different broadcast calls.
The KMOX call is a bit... interesting.

Scutaro was in a tough position and not able to cross second to avoid him. Still it doesn't give a free pass to take a player out with a stunt like that.
<< <i>Just saw the Scutaro footage on the news. That wasn't a slide as he wasn't even trying for the bag. That was a tackle. >>
Starlin Castro likes the way you think.

Not a tackle. That was "Sweep the Leg."

<< <i>This was an accident. >>
A reckless "accident." Holliday's intent was probably not "I'm going to hurt this guy and knock him out of the game", but based on how he slid, it was probably "I'm going to make as much contact with this guy as I can and see what happens."

According to Bobby Evans:
"We talked in dollars and years, but ultimately the timing was not right. They wanted to wait and feel out the market, and we needed to execute business. All I can speculate is that Lozano (Beltran's agent) didn't convey the conversations to (Beltran)."

Game 3: Matt Cain
Game 4: Tim Lincecum (?)
Game 5: Barry Zito or Madison Bumgarner?

We'll see if the Giants can continue their road-warrior tenancies.
Lohse is having a career year, and does very well at home (8-1, 2.33 era, 1.065 whip).
Cain is also having a career year, but isn't as sharp on the road (8-2, 3.56 era, 1.178 whip).
As a perpetually insecure Giants fan, I'm bracing myself for something ugly involving obnoxious Beltranning and Hollidaying.
WTB: 2001 Leaf Rookies & Stars Longevity: Ryan Jensen #/25
Cain in enemy territory, where he's not always his best. He pitched well in Cinci though, but there's always the threat of the Giants offense getting shutdown again, as it seems to be a very finicky machine.
Blanco's been solid during this post-season, and that's vital. Curiously, in the 5 games of the NLDS, Blanco hit .286/.375/.571. in 2 games of the NLCS, he's hit .286/.375/.571.

Um... it's called "breaking up the double play" for a reason.
