that is not a mint state coin.....my belief is that the slab has been tampered with (notice what looks like a saw or file mark on the lower left of the slab)

proceed with caution (also be cautious when laying blame at the feet of PCGS when it may not be deserved)

the more i look at the coin what appears as file marks may be part of the top-loader that is layed on the scanner.....i withhold judgement.....it certainly doesnt look MS but if it is a scan rather than a photo the luster could appear muted

Not really worth the effort to monkey around with a 64 BN 1909-VDB.

It must be a bargain since the seller has it listed for $60...must be a nice example too.

That sucker looks to have verdigris all over the reverse and doesn't look MS to me either...
I've got about ten of these with similar damage that I'm trying to 'conserve'... Raw... Not worth grading and they'd be 'environmental damaged' if they slabbed i would guess..

Those are horrible scans of a coin that probably looks reasonably decent in-hand.
  • GrumpyEdGrumpyEd Posts: 4,749 ✭✭✭
Like I said nobody would bother messing with that coin, not worth it.
Probably just a brown coin that looks ugly in the pics.

I actually think that might be an okay-looking piece that has just been horribly photographed. The stuff that looks to be corrosion is probably just blue toning IMO.

I know what you're talking about... I've bought a few higher grade BN 1909 VDBs off eBay in 64BN-66BN over the past few years that had horrible looking auction photos/scans that turned out to be very attractive in hand. That said, I'm just not seeing that or any potential whatsoever with this particular example. The reverse looks very problematic... I almost want to buy it just to see how bad it really is image

The discoloration / halo surrounding the coin looks odd, maybe it's the lighting from the scanner.

    This.

Bad scan of a coin in some kind of slab album page, is my theory.

I think it is probably still an ugly coin, but could technically be Mint State. Who knows.

Most likely the worst possible picture that could be shown of what very well may be an attractive, brown coin.

That has to be a fake slab, a slab that has been opened or a Photoshop job.

Anyone else notice that it is being sold by a PCGS Authorized dealer at least according to the listing.
