What are the top 5 collected series in the U.S and the top 5 less collected series?

I have no idea here in Canada the 50 cent series is #1 then the 1$ and 1 cent are # 2 probably tied. The worst been the 10 cent series and probably the 25 cent series. The 5 cent series been probably in the middle.

Lincoln cents, then Morgan dollars if we're talking type of coin (and we discount currently circulating coins.)

I would imagine if you were talking strictly by denomination (including currently circulating coins) I would say:

    Cents #1
Quarters #2 (because of the state quarters program.)
    Halves #3
    Dimes #4
    Dollars#5
    Nickels #6

Just a shot in the dark.
  • Where do the 1/2 cents belong on that list?

I would think there's quite a gap between the former 6 and the latter 4.
    Half Cents #7
    20 cents #8
    2 cents #9
    3 cents #10

    (No gold.)

Morgan $1s, Lincoln cents, Washington Quarters (due to the state quarter program) are likely the most popular.

Also add Franklin halves and Peace Dollars to the list because they are so affordable.

Walking Liberty Halves, Saint Gaudens $20s and Standing Liberty quarters are very much up there and valued, immensely, due to their rarity and aesthetic appeal. What keeps them lower on the list is their prohibitive cost. Same goes for Seated Coinage and Capped Bust Coinage.

No real idea. I think you could get a lot of different answers failing to omit moderns, or anything dated after 1933, so let's leave those out. I'll leave out gold as well, since I have no idea how it fits in with copper and silver.

    One list:

    #1 Lincoln Cents (eternally popular)
#2 Morgan Dollars (partially as bullion)
    #3 Buffalo Nickels
    #4 Walking Liberty Halves
    #5 Mercury Dimes
    #6 Indian Cents
    #7 Barber coinage
    #8 Large and Half Cents
    #9 Seated coinage
    #10 Bust silver coinage
#11 Earlier Nickels (Shield and Liberty)
    #12 2-cent
    #13 20 cent
    #14 Trimes
    #15 Trickels

Forgot to include SLQs which probably fit below Large Cents and above Seated coinage. Also Silver Commems, which are likely as popular as Indian Cents.

There is a dedicated group of half cent collectors who belong to the Early American Coppers club (EAC). Most of them are looking for rare varieties and die states. Many of them prefer raw coins, although I think that slabbed half cents have more followers than slabbed large cents.

I'd say that half cents are in the quiet area. They are better than Two and Three cent pieces, but definitely not "main stream."

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Judging from the numbers certified by PCGS...I'd say...1) Morgan dollars. 2) Silver Eagles

I would agree in general with renomedphys' list, with some commentary.....
I don't know that I'd have buff nickels at #3, that seems a little high.
Large cents I believe are far more popular than half cents, and may deserve a #5 spot on their own.
Barber coinage is also very popular right now; if you consider just the halves, it's probably up there pretty high.

I though SBA collectors numbered 13,297,043. Someone has fed you the wrong numbers. imageimage

Where do you get these numbers???

I can not believe that SBA's are the most collected series.

I also can not believe that Mercury dimes are not way up there.

You know your series is among the least collected if your registry set competion is mostly comprised of sets with names like Bass, Eliasberg and Brand.

I think it also depends on your definition of the word "collect." Cents are the coin that most people set aside, usually in some sort of Mason jar, until they accumulate. Cents are #1 in this case...no question about it.

I was talking about the post concerning SBA's being the most collected series including an exact number of collectors rather than your comment on Mercury dimes being popular. Sorry I wasn't more clear.image

The answer will just simply vary according to the collector. I would say Lincoln cents and Morgan dollars, most likely. As a collector of both, I don't really have any key date Morgans, but can't imagine not owning a 1909-S VDB. Yet I know a well-known and respected collector on the boards, roadrunner, has never bothered or sought to own one. To each their own! image
  • If you would like the hear my list SBA are way at the bottom. I would like a cheerios dollar, but I would end up just selling it for better coins.

My 5 favorite in case anyone wants to know are as follows.

Quarters ( I like them all)
Halves ( I like them all)
Dimes/half cents ( Dimes anything pre -1964, half cents- I like them all)
Large cents ( I like them all)

    next would be Indians.
Gold not included. I like all Gold.
