Maybe a 4' high pedestal sign stand, that says "please wait here".

I see nothing wrong with it, and yes, the WRONG customers may find it a bit insulting, but those are the kind of customers you'd probably rather walk out of your shop than to butt in and be a part of the current transaction that is involving someone else. Good luck! Love it!

The sign is a good idea, IMO. I'd keep it short and simple (unless it's NY/NJ): "Please respect the privacy of customers."

First, people can't be expected to read your signs, much less obey them.

Second, if you're going to keep merchandise on a counter, you can't expect customers to step away from that counter until it's their turn.

My suggestion is to keep a section of the counter clean and put up a sign that says "Appraisals Here", or something like that. A small screen or barrier at that spot to ensure privacy might also be helpful.

And yes,I maintained a very thoughtful distance!

I'm in the group that thinks the wording should be reconsidered.

The concept is great. If I were a seller with a box of inherited coins, I would welcome the sign. If I were a buyer purchasing a significant amount of PM, I would welcome the sign.

But if I were a collector, coming in off the street, to browse, check inventory, etc..... I would wonder just how welcome am I to browse around? The wording plants a little doubt in my mind. Perhaps would do a very quick glance but depending on the atmosphere of the shop, could turn around and leave.

Personally, I wouldn't take offense to the sign you posted, but if you were to change it I kind of like this one posted by another member with the slight modification. Some of the more sensitive people might get upset with the "our patrons". I mean what? I'm not a patron? Why is that guy more important than me? You get the idea.image

I approve of the sign, I get it. I was in a pawn shop once looking for silver coins. The pawn guy pulled out a box and set it on the counter in front of me. Two guys walked over and stood right behind me looking over my shoulder. I was was not happy. Some people have no manners.

  • I feel the original sign is fine. And some of the ideas were good too. What is one mans manners is not allways the same in everyones book. Should you have to stop and say anything every time someone walks in? The shop I go to often, I stop and tell the owner to take care of them and then we resume what we are working on, he has never had a problem with that.

Then maybe you should lock the door to your shop when you have just one customer in there.

That'll be real good for business.

If ya google DVT "You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches", you can see the basis of the quote.

What it has to do with people snooping in on private transactions in a coin shop where a sign is posted that you should not snoop on transactions is beyond me.

Since he quoted my prior post, I would guess it doesn't have anything to do with snooping in on private transactions and everything to do with the capacity for people to dislike just about anything.

You forgot the part where the phone rings and everyone standing there has to wait while the salesperson goes over how to tell what a 1909 wheat cent is worth or why "trust" is spelled wrong on a peace dollar. All this phone attention for a person that will probably never show up in person.

A sign saying simply PRIVACY PLEASE was at the coin shop I started going to as a 10 year old in 1967. I didn't know what it meant until the 2nd or 3rd time my Dad took me there, a man came in to sell Mr Causey a 1919-P Buffalo nickel, probably XF. Mr Causey offered one dollar, and I immediately yelled "Wow, Mr Causey! You're just gonna give him a dollar? It looks like it's worth A LOT MORE THAN THAT!!" Mr Causey handed me the nickel and said "What a smart young man you are. You pay the man what you think it's worth, and then you pay ME something for use of my floor space and air conditoning so you will have a nice place to buy coins from people who come here from the advertising that I pay for. Not realizing extreme sarcasm, I asked Mr Causey how much he wanted just as my Dad grabbed the coin out my hand and handed it back to Mr Causey telling him "We are so very very sorry." As he was dragging me out of the coin shop I remember saying "Why are we sorry?? I almost made a deal!!"
