    I don't need people to close their ears and eyes when I'm doing a deal...just their mouths...and it would help if they kept their hands to themselves as well. I can recount several times where a lookie-lou hangs over the guy's shoulder and simply reaches over and starts picking up stuff. It gets even better when they totally take over the conversation and try to make offers on the guy's stuff. Wow. What happened to common courtesy and common sense? I can't believe that some people seem to think that by entering a shop they have some god-given right to interfere with other peoples' business transactions.

    I don't have such a sign but I've considered it. And frankly if such a sign offends someone...good; it's doing its job. People who don't respect the privacy of others and think it's OK to butt into deals, I don't need as customers and I want to offend them so they don't come back.
    People with brains know that if there is a selling or buying deal going on, it is none of their business, know not to stick their nose into it... and will simply browse around, etc. while waiting their turn.

    I'm always surprised (although I guess I shouldn't be) by the "Can you beileve what I heard at the coin shop the other day?" threads that get posted here. I've been in lots of coin shops over the years and have found it pretty easy to ignore other peoples' transactions.

    and going on day #4 of my posted sign, not one complaint,
    I even ask several customers about it, and they all had no issue with it...
    It stays posted :-)

    and as for the "ripping off old ladys"... I'll leave that stuff to to Hotel Buyer, I'm here to stay...

    I use a sign for the deaf, but the dumb still need it vocalized. It's not that they cannot read. They cannot change.

    If I'm bringing in 100 oz of gold or 2000 oz of silver to sell, that is nobody's business and that should be taken to the back. Privacy problem solved. If that can't be done than an appt. should be made.


    If the dealer thinks the merch and cash should be spread all over the counter with customers in the store. Then don't be surprised if there are onlookers. No matter what the sign says.

  • I agree with the short, simple, and polite approach, but I also think you've all overlooked an opportunity to speak to your customers in a manner that will catch their eye:

    You need a large color poster of a Fugio Cent with a highlighted box drawn around the "Mind Your Business" at the bottom ;-)

    If you're bringing in 100 oz. gold/2000 oz. silver, then common sense would dictate that you would have already made an appointment and are not just randomly showing up to drop $260,000 worth of gold & silver on us without notice... and the size of the deal is irrelevant; it's still no one else's business regardless.

    Many B/Ms are small one/two man operations so most deals get done at the counter out of necessity; they don't necessarily always have the time or ability to take people to the back room or office (unless they're doing the deal before or after hours, which would make the problem moot). A 100 oz. deal such as that which you hypothesize should actually get handled fairly quickly as consummation of the deal would basically only involve examining/counting the items, signing paperwork and cutting a check. That's not as time consuming as, say, someone bringing in a large collection or big batch of randomly mixed unsorted coins that one would have to spend more time going through. We try to take such deals to the back, but if it's a surprise deal where they just came in and dropped the stuff on us without notice, if customers come into the front end I will obviously have to excuse myself to deal with them while they wait in the office.

    I doubt to many B&M's would be able to handle that much on top of the counter in front of everyone. I would not accept a check either.

    I am self employeed and 1% of my customers take up 99 percent of my time for little gain. It is that 1% that cause me the most grief. They see fit to tell me how i should run my business and why i need them. The funny thing is they come to me and i do not actively look for them.

    My favorite customers are the ones that know it all, bash my stuff and then still want it.

    Actually, it is the closest LCS in my area that "knows it all,bashes my stuff,and then still wants it all"! (no smiley face)

    It is amazing that these "experts" have never run a business in their lives, yet see fit to tell you how to run yours. When I used to set up at shows and someone would bash my coins (including, in particular, one arrogant vest-pocket dealer who was obviously trying to get a better price), I would politely put the coin back in the case, and tell them there was no need to waste each other's time. Any time they would show up at a later show, I would tell them, before they opened their mouths, "I don't have anything for you." A very polite way of saying "Hit the road!." Such people, whether collector or dealer, deserve neither respect, courtesy, or time.

    I do,Millers Mint! Harry is my favorite dealer,which I've mentioned in the ANA announcement thread. It's worth driving a half hour to a much better LCS.

    Seems a little patronizing to me. Might turn some potential customers away. Everyone hates signs telling them what to do. (remember that old song "signs") From their perspective they may think "I am here to give this guy some business and he is treating me like a kid". Where do they wait? How far do they have to step away? Is someone going to tell me when it is my turn? A little confusing.
    Gold and silver are valuable but wisdom is priceless.

    You're right! I haven't ever seen a sign of the type discussed here in ANY coin shop here on Long Island,which is no small place for collectors and dealers alike.

    You mean the one where the guy who hates signs ends up making one of his own, and seems pleased with himself for doing so?
