The Tragically Hip wrote a song called "Escape is At Hand for the Travellin' Man" as a tribute to Jim Ellison of Material Issue. The 2 met briefly at a festival and struck up a friendship. Ellison's suicide hit Gord hard.
I remember seeing them around town with bands like Simple Simon and Trippin' Daisy opening. Ellison and the band are still missed.
My first RUSH concert was the Grace Under Pressure tour. I have seen RUSH the most. Watching those three play is something to see.
Like others have said, U2 is excellent in concert.
Best concert I ever saw was in high school when Eric Clapton toured with Roger Waters doing Pink Floyd. OMG. Clapton was unreal that night. Roger Waters let him do his thing during guitar solos, and Clapton went on and on and it never got boring.
Too many to list but I've probably seen Journey the most, probably 7-8 times. I saw them in '86 when they did the Mountain Aire concert that was used to film the video to Girl Can't Help it. I also saw them at the end of their tour at the SF Cow Palace which I believe was their last live performance with Perry. I also saw them in Marin when they broke in Steve Augeri in front of friends and family. The venue only fit about 2000 people and Steve Smith was in the audience. I got to sit in the front row in front of Neal Schon and got a guitar pick, drum stick and the set list. I also saw many of the other Schon projects like Bad English, Kevin Russell Blues band and solo gigs in small clubs. I'll use this as an opportunity to try to boost my Youtube views. I shot some video of me playing some classic Journey tunes. There's four videos I've posted so far. From this link you can get to the other three if you're really bored.
I also saw Van Halen with all three singers, Rush, the Who (1989), SoundGarden, Alice in Chains, Boston, Kiss, Nugent, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner with Gramm, Neil Young, Knopfler, Page and Plant, Y&T, Night Ranger, Pearl Jam, Blue Oyster Cult, Rolling Stones, the Police and many others.
Nice video and good guitar work! Journey is a fun band to try learn when learning piano as well, albeit too hard for me! They have such classic, recognizable sounds.
I saw Lou Gramm in concert once a few years back - it was funny, he said something to the affect of "I'm going to do stuff from my solo career, from Foreigner, and from ShadowKing", and there was a big cheer when he said ShadowKing, but then he never did do any songs from ShadowKing.
I remember that Girl Can't help it video as well. Cool.

Thanks JJacks. If you see the Girl Can't help it video again, look in the crowd shots for a guy waving crutches in the air. I was standing about three feet from him. I can't see mysel in the video because the shot is too far away but it's pretty cool that they filmed the spot I was standing at.

I sat right behind Omar Vizquel at a Metallica show once. It was back when he played for Cleveland and he had his arm in a sling. The concert was during the All-Star break. The woman who was with him was HOT.
That's my cool story.
Oh, and for my Ohio peeps, I saw Dick Goddard at a Marilyn Manson show in Cleveland once! For those who don't know, Dick Goddard is an OLD weatherman in Cleveland. Anyway, turns out Goddard is good friends with Marilyn Manson's parents (who were also at the show). At the time, Goddard's neighbor was a teenage girl who loved Manson, and Goddard promised her that he would introduce her to Manson. Anyway... yeah.

Rush, Rush and more Rush. Have seen then over 50 times, the first in 1981 for Moving Pictures, which made the recent Time Machine Tour something special for me. I'll have to root around for the stub, but I saw them front row in December 1982 at Nassau Coliseum at the last of four local shows and the face value was $12.50. I scalped a pair of tickets for $79 and was an absolute celebrity in high school in the days that followed. Rush was HUGE back then.

Great moments in County Fair history:
- Eddie Money in St. Petersburg - Dr. John and George Clinton at 2 different Champaign county fairs - In Essex county we saw Benny Mardones who had a minor hit with "Into the Night" with the very creepy opening line, "She's just 16 years old. Leave her alone, they say". He played it twice that evening.
My fondness for this thread continues to grow daily.

Lived in Buffalo growing up in the 70's-80's, College in the 90's, and started going to see The Hip maybe around 88 or so. It's been over 30 shows I'm sure. I've seen them at places like the taste of columbus with 30 people in the crowd, and in the Air Canada Center with 20,000.
Oh - on the REO - just saw them with my wife a few weeks back here at Huntington Park (Columbus Clippers). Was just like a "County fair" show, and it was good. Worth the trip.

I don't go to many concerts so have only seen two bands multiple times:
1) Foreigner - 3 times. What's unique is that each time was with a separate lead singer. Oddly enough, the worst show of the 3 was the one with Lou Gramm, the original guy - and this was before he got sick and lost a lot of his voice.
2) America - 2 times. First time was among the best shows I've ever seen.

<< <i>Rush - and why the he11 are they not in the Rockin Roll Hall of Fame yet!?!?!?! >>
I can speak to this as a big fan of RUSH. Like I've said, it is the group I have seen the most in concert.
However, unlike most RUSH fans, I also listen to other music, and enjoy listening to other music as much, if not more then RUSH. So while I'm not a RUSH only fan (as most of their fans are), I am still a huge fan of theirs.
Why isn't RUSH in the rock and roll hall of fame ??? Well, it's not for their musicianship, because they have three guys who can play in any band in the world, past and present. It's not for their album selling performance, because they're right up there with the big boys.
It's got to be because they just haven't had many hits that go outside the RUSH following. Tom Sawyer ??? Yes, that's one the casual rock fan can recognize. Limelight ??? Yes, that's another one the casual rock fan knows. Subdivisions ??? Most likely.
Other then that, what other RUSH song is known as a big hit with the general rock crowd ?
If I had a vote, they'd be in in a heartbeat. Guys are simply the best in my opinion, but they sure didn't write beautiful songs the way Yes, Elton John, America, and other groups did. I would also think Geddy's voice didn't help. Neither did their conceptual albums from the beginning of their careers. I
From the "Way to make me feel like an old fart" category, my wife gave me tickets to see the Police in their last tour a year or so back. I am almost 42. I took a friend of mine who just turned 30. When I asked him if he wanted to go he asked me "Who are they and what do they sing?"
Don Mattingly, Yogi Berra, Thurman Munson, Brian McCann and Topps Rookie Cup autograph collector www.questfortherookiecup.com
My wife and I saw the Police on that tour (their big reunion tour of recent date). We won tickets from a radio station otherwise couldn't afford to have gone (because they didn't come to our city, we had to fly to Phoenix for the show).
Anyway my most-seen bands are Yes, Rush, Journey, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Chuck Berry, REO Speedwagon, Little Richard, Joe Satriani and Chickenfoot, Moe., String Cheese Incident ... I could go on but I'm not being fair because my day job is Professional Musician and I see concerts all the time.
I can say that the reasons I've seen those bands more than once is because each time they were AMAZING. Night Ranger and Def Leopard were on the top of their game, too. Also seen Bob Dylan and Crosby-Stills-Nash, sadly those guys were not so top. My most disappointing concert of all-time was Damian Rice, but I wasn't a huge fan of his to begin with so ... partial bias.
I have seen U2 and Tom Petty 3 times each. The best concert, was when I saw U2 during their ZooTV tour in Foxboro, Ma. Bono was talking to the crowd about halfway through and he said he wanted to give a shoutout to one of the greats who just retired. The lights went out and on all of the screens the number 33 started flashing and the crowd started chanting "Larry, Larry, Larry." The day before Larry Bird retired.
Going to the under the influence tour this weekend. Glad to see the hometown boys team up for a tour.(Mac miller and wiz Khalifa) along with Kendrick Lamar and another hometown boy, Chevy woods. Should be a great show.
As far as national level bands I was lucky enough to see Pantera 5 times and Ozzy 8 times. Love the hard rock/metal!!
BTW, I suppose this would be a good time to plug my band - here's a video of us live onstage...if you're down with solid hard rock check it out & lemme know what you think!
This doesn't answer the question (the real answer would be lame and boring and predictable), but the BEST show I ever saw was Mr George Thorogood.
Lots of guys/groups phone it in, especially after the drug-induced fighting and wife-swapping and child-having. But ol George and his boys still play like they're 22 and hungry. Go see them at your city's Summer Showdown Series if you can.
Fugazi - 8 times NOFX - 6 times Violent Femmes - 12 times Avail - 7 times Dillinger Four - 10 times Decendents - 5 times Ramones - 2 times Marked Men - 12 times Green Day - 7 times At The Drive In - 5 times (first time with no more than 20 people, opening bands included, in the crowd) Yesterday's Kids - 30+ times
