Like driving on a freeway: Are You better at collecting than the average collector?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,744 ✭✭✭✭✭
Within your specialty- the series you specifically collect, are you better at it than the average collector?
Do you know more about the coins you specialize in than the average dealer?

Are you sometimes surprised at the lack of knowledge dealers have?
Ever wonder how they stay in business, or do you realize the typical collector and/or dealer are like general practitioners and you're a specialist who
has dedication time and attention to hone your skill set and knowledge within your series so yes, you wouldn't expect others to totally 'get it'?

    over a million miles ... yes, I'm quite confident I'm a top-level driver!

maybe if I pay attention, after a million coins I will be a better grader

I am an average driver and, overall, an average to below average collector. In my specialty area, I am above average, but I think that most people who spend time and effort in a narrow area achieve above average status.

That goes with just about everything. Hard work, a willingness to learn, the right environment and influences, a little bit of intelligence and a little luck, and anyone can be well above average in many of life's pursuits.

I drive to fast, change lanes without signaling, curse, use hand signals, text, read the paper, use the shoulder to pass, that is about the same approach i use to collecting.

I feel i am a good collector for what my goals are.

My answer would have to be Yes.
I have spent over 45 years on the series I collect.
Read every book published about them that I have found.
Constantly researching proof varieties hoping to find new ones.
I spend at least 4 hours per day glassing Kennedy Halfs photo documenting diagnostics.
Hope to have a complete dvd processed later this year.
Knowledge is the Key to being sucessful in having a great collection.

I plan to finish my complete variety proof collection before my 65h birthday in 2014.
I think I only need to find 7 more as of now.

I'm much much better than the average US coin collector; but I don't have enough money to be a better collector than the average "well-respected" U.S. Coin Forum member

I read about a study that discovered that really intelligent people are lousy drivers because when they are driving which is a mundane and boring activity, their mind wanders while thinking profound thoughts about anything other than the road in front of them.
