Do AGEs "tone" in PCGS slabs?

derrybderryb Posts: 36,791 ✭✭✭✭✭
Came across this ebay listing and realized this seems to be not an isolated case with AGEs in PCGS slabs. I collect AGEs and have noticed this with a few of my own PCGS graded AGEs as well. My AGEs in competitors slabs as well as my numerous raw AGEs have not displayed this toning, which actually appears as a brass color to the entire coin. Anyone else with AGEs experienced this? My appologies if I have offended PCGS with this post, but I feel it to be a valid question.

I have some .9999 Fine First Spouses (70's and 69's) that have turned in the holder.

they have a splotchy brassy/bronzey color on them.

don't ask me how .9999 Fine toned over such a large area (splotches >>>> small specks and spots)

    Stop slabbing bullion!

    This!
It does happen in any slab, not just PCGS.

Surface contamination? Perhaps a rinse in acetone prior to slabbing would help.

I have noticed the same issue, but never really thougth about it until now. PCGS AGEs do have a tone to them, while ATS slabs (same year), do not.

I have a 1/10th oz that has very nice toning (Though mild) in a PCGS slab. Held onto it for that reason when I sold the 1/4 and 1/2 oz that came with the set.

Which is ironic because I thought one of the special qualities of gold is that they do not tarnish.

A few years ago PCGS mailed out flyers warning all PCGS club members to stop using the poly bags for submitting coins. Before that PCGS insisted that all coins submitted were to be placed in a seperate poly bags within the 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 flip. The flyer stated that the poly bags could coat the coins in a thin layer of PVC causing the coins to tone.
PCGS used to sell the poly bags and 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 polyvinil flips to submitt coins inside of.

How can a polyethylene (poly) bag coat a coin with PVC?

derry, your not the only one. Ask Chris from Hawaii........he bought a set of PCGS 2008 PR70 buffs and a set of NGC 2008 PR 70 buffs. Both had no spots, well when it came time for him to sell to buy your coins, he took them out and the pcgs developed nasty spots all over and the NGC ones had no issues. AND he has had them on other slabbed coins.

We know that the 24K buffalos can develop the dreaded red spotting before and after slabbing, the slab appears to have no affect. The "toning" i am referring to is a change in color of the entire AGE to what looks like the color of brass and lighter in color than the original gold color. I have only seen this occur once the AGE is slabbed (never in a flip or airtite) and only in PCGS and ICG slabs with ICG showing a high percentage of occurence. Can anyone with an extensive AGE collection in PCGS or ICG slabs confirm this?

I actually like the way it looks and decided to keep it because of this reason.

yes, i believe AGE's tone in PCGS holders. i have a 1989 1/10 that i had slabbed because i thought it had a shot at 70...well, it's ms68 (damn), but it turned a very pleasing coppery orange color all over the coin (no spots). i like it. but, i'm the kinda guy that would slab bullion and like toned coins. so, take that for what it's worth! image

btw, i'll take $300 for it. i know you bullion guys will jump all over that! haha.

I had a 1989 1/2 ozer that hadn't toned all those years until I had it slabbed at PCGS. Then it toned splotchy. Then it got spot reviewed. Then it got conserved. Now it's toning again, but the toning is more uniform.

Can we assume spots, milk spots, and poor toning affects the value or sell price later?

Yes since they affect the eye appeal and result in a less desirable product.

(coinman420 - Picture) That is it! I have some AGE's plus some Gold Commemorative coins that have this toning. The Commemorative Gold went straight to PCGS in Mint Capsules, slabbed came back and was placed in a SDB........ 6 months later copper toning! ????
