I go to the bank today %#$&*?#%! Update

Two days ago I got a letter from my bank saying that they were going to redo the vault area and that I needed to come in to relocate my lock boxes to another place in the vault or to another one of their branches. I go in today to find out what this is all about. They have put in some new boxes and are going to take some old ones ( mine ) out. They had the right sizes that I needed so I filled out the paperwork. I removed my first box and placed it on a rolling cart to push it to the other side of the vault. It is a huge vault and my back is not as good as it once was. The box was the very large size ( and heavy ) and mostly had full PCGS blue boxes in it. While the lady opened up the new box around the corner of the vault I started to push the cart. The floor of the vault has a thin carpet on it. All of a sudden the wheels of the cart get hung up. The box goes tumbling off of the cart upside down. PCGS boxes spill out and several pop open spilling about a hundred PCGS slabs all over the floor. I say %#$&*?%!. The lady comes around the corner and we both get down on the floor putting the slabs back in the blue PCGS boxes. I did not have time to see if any of the slabs are cracked. I had each of the blue boxes numbered and had an inventory sheet listing what was in each box. Now the coins are all messed up in the boxes. I will have to spend time next week at the bank redoing my inventory sheets and checking to see if any of the slabs cracked. When I got that first lock box into its new place the next one ( which is much lighter ) presented no problem. If this was next Friday ( the 13th ) I could understand this happening.
I got the coins back in the right boxes today. None of the PCGS slabs were cracked or damaged. While I was going through the coins I looked at my 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. The PCGS coin number lists it as a 3 leaf variety but it is actually the rarer 2 leaf variety. I will get it into the correct slab in the next few months. I guess some good did come out of this after all.

sorry to hear
glad you're alright though
The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

I'm sorry to hear about it because that is mortifying (you'll remember that moment forever in a flashbulb like "where were you when Kennedy was shot, shuttle exploded, 911, etc.. but it's your personal one) and you'll have some work to do to fix it, which will be inconvienent.. but I got to say it first...
it's a rich man's problem

<< <i>A couple years ago, my bank built a new bank on the same property. They had to move everything and sent a letter stating we could make arrangements to move our own stuff or they would do it. I meant to do it myself but kinda forgot and so they did it for me and everything worked out just fine. Sorry to hear about your experience. Good luck with the clean up. >>
Oooooh, I wouldn't want any bank digging around inside of my SDB. Isn't that why they have two keys?

does someone have the cipher, key or primer.

They only have 1 key now. In order to get into the SDB vault now all I do is type my box number into a keypad and place my palm and fingers into a scanner. Then I just use my key to access my box. I never have to bother anyone at the bank. It is very nice to access my box whenever the bank is open without having to interact with anyone. It gives me more privacy...I can access my box several times in one day if I want and I bother no one.

I'm so glad I don't have to worry about this kind of thing happening any more. Since I sold my collection, my insurance payments have been greatly reduced and I no longer need an SDB.
<< <i>Dude, that must have been spectacular!

Oh, the crap on the floor is a downer, but be glad it's sooo heavy you needed a cart. Most

I hope SDB here means safely dropped box.
<< <i>That's one reason PCGS tapes every blue box before they mail them. >>
So does CAC and it's a beyatch to clean off. I just wrap in a piece of newspaper before taping. Works great, box stays clean and is lots easier to open/unpack.
<< <i>I don't see that as a bad thing. You get to revisit all your PCGS slabbed coins once again. >>
That's what I thought when I read that.
Just pick out a day when you don't have much to do. Go down there and leisurely rearrange all your coins in your boxes, taking the time to look at them, admire their beauty, reminisce how you got them, etc....all the stuff collectors like to do with their little treasures.
The disaster may turn out to be a pleasurable opportunity.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...

Just don't stay beyond bank closing hours as they might forget you're in there, and lock you in until the next day!

<< <i>Look on the bright side, you have hundreds of PCGS graded coins in worth putting i a lock box. >>
<< <i>Just one more reason not to have an SDB.
Not true! This past week I was in my bank(one of the big 5) for another reason, and they asked me if I was a veteran. After I said yes, they immediately gave me a FREE safe deosit box, free checking, and no ATM charges, and more freebies. All veterans should check with their banks about this.
