start of a five dollar gold type set in OGHs

fishteethfishteeth Posts: 2,264 ✭✭✭✭✭

Looking through my collection I realized I have inadvertently built the start of a five dollar gold type set in old green holders. Looks Like I need to find an heraldic eagle
and an Indian.
The 1860-C just came home this week. The eye appeal of the coin in hand just jumped out at me while looking through a collection of coins that I believe has been off the market
for a long time. I think the coin came from the same set as the 1834 posted here.

Great start to the set! IMO my favorite is the 1834 in terms of eye appeal but if pressed to choose one coin from the set it'd be the 1813 for sure because of it's age and scarcity.

Holy Cow! That is a spectacular little group of coins. Oddly enough, I have found that in the limited number of coins I have kept in my own collection that OGH half dollars are waaaaaay over-represented.

Nice - now you need to get them in the same generation holders to have that nice uniform look. image

Your 1813 is BD-2, the scarcer of the two varieties.

Building a type set of $5 gold pieces is a wonderful accomplishment, but it gets really tough to get them all. The Small Eagle coin is tough, but the Reduced Size Capped Bust (1829 to mid 1834) is even rarer. It's not a pretty coin, but it's a rare one.

nice coins. but, wouldn't you also need the 1839 with the obverse mint mark (C, D, or O)?

That one usually is not included in a type set unless you are going by Doug Winter's plan for the C or D mints. Usually the mint mark location does not constitute a type. If it did the Seated dimes and half dimes with the below and within the wreath on the reverse would be types along with some other coins. Even that JFK half dollar had the mint mark on the reverse in 1964, but it was moved to obverse in subsequent years.

Great coins fishteeth. It must have been fun when you realized you had an OGH type set! image

I especially like the look of the holders with the solid rings:

Good point Bill. I've never heard of mint mark location signifying a type for type collecting purposes.

I am interested to hear of DW's interests in this area and will have to search for it on his blog sometime.

Yeah, those are nice, of course what really stands out is the 1813, I still need that type and the next type that Bill posted... and of course the capped bust right small eagle!

How about the prettier of the two Capped Bust facing left, the 1807-1812?

    Those are some outstanding coins!
