1839-O Classic Gold Variety?

cameron12xcameron12x Posts: 1,384 ✭✭✭
Can any of the Classic Gold experts here tell me if this QE:

Is it a "High Date, Wide Fraction, Breen-6512, Variety-27" example?

And if so, what is its relative scarcity and premium, if any.

Technical grade?

Thanks!

Yes. I'm not sure of the relative rarities of the two varieties, but I don't think there is much of a difference there.

Thanks... what is the ratio between the two?

    Technical grade? VF-20?

it is estimated that the ratio is 2-1 with the variety 27 being the more common

very very very few people collect these by die marriages and those few that do can finish the set probably rather quickly

gold going to 1600-1800 an ounce certainly didn't help matters any - it erased numismatic value on a large number of coins including a lot of die marriages, and of course helped a few others

    Probably about $300 to $3,000.

Thanks I actually threw this together rather quickly. Canon 5Dmk2 camera, Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS macro lens, simple desktop lighting, hand-held.

Thanks for the information. What do you estimate the technical grade to be?

That is the wide-fraction, low "3" variety.

The other variety for this date (narrow-fraction, high "3") is a bit scarcer, and I believe that all of them have medal alignment (reverse rotated 180 degrees from normal).

Thanks for the information Daniel... much appreciated.

Anyone have thoughts on a technical grade?

My technical grade would be "Fine-18." If someone called it a VF-20, I would not put up a fuss because the piece is so clean (lacks major marks) for the grade. The lack of serious problems is a big plus for this piece, and for that reason it’s worth VF money regardless of the technical grade.

Thanks everyone for your input... much appreciated.

So, for now, I suppose I'll call it:

1839-O Classic Quarter Eagle (VF-20), High Date, Low "3", Wide Fraction, Breen-6512, Variety-27

Do many people collect this series by die variety?
