Here's to remembering and living-up to the significance of their sacrifice.

Today we honor all our military men and women...without their service, it is unlikely we would be enjoying life as we know it today. Cheers, RickO

I strongly disagree. In the spirit of fight/military/death today, people say things that make no sense. There are many things more patriotic than getting yourself killed, or killing somebody else. Like helping cure diseases, or making great discoveries that help other people. Or helping others in your free time. You can do these things to help other people and show you love your country as well.

The quote doesn't say "There's nothing more noble than getting yourself killed", it says giving your life FOR OTHERS, aka Supreme Sacrifice. You can't do more than that.

The way I see it is that those who have the freedom and prosperity to search for the cures of diseases and other helpful discoveries are enabled by those who fight for the freedom needed to foster that creative environment. How many medical breakthroughs come from dictatorships? Slim to none. God bless soldiers who endangered themselves and paid the price to defend the fragile freedom we still have in spite of some of our political leaders. This is their day.

"Freedom" does bring sacrifices that most can't understand unless they've lived it.

I come from a military family and am very grateful and thankful to all those who serve our country. My Dad will turn 92 this week. He was in the Navy and stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. He was on the docks near the Shaw at the time. His story appears in the book "Day of Infamy." Thanks to service men and women who sacrifice for our country, like my Dad, I am very proud to be an American. My Dad is my hero.

Here are a few photos of my dad in Pearly Harbor shortly before the bombing.

Well said, Cs. Freedom is not free. God bless the loved ones of all of those who have paid for our ability to remain free with their lives, and those who currently serve in our Armed Forces.

My dad fought in WWII. At his funeral in 1999 I found this article from when he was in Europe and Northern Africa (1942-1945). He was a funny man. I can almost hear the laughter when he was "present". Today he is "absent."

To keep it coin related, my business is coins.

  • When you look to your buddy and decide you would rather die together than abandon one another and condemn you buddy to death....... that is what memorial say is about. Most will never get it, a few will.

I agree with the line from the Movie “Patten,” and I will have to paraphrase:

“Yes, there is something noble about giving one’s life for a just cause, but there is not wrong with having some poor “born out of wedlock” person who is fighting for the wrong cause give his life instead. Somehow remembering only those who died on Memorial Day and not remembering those who served nobly and survived the conflict does not seem adequate.”

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

A great time to remember why we have our liberty's today, to think otherwise is misguided.

To all who have sacrificed, bless.
  • Yes, this is a good time to remember those who have sacrificed for our wonderful country.
