Is It Harder to Find a Coin, or to Pay For It?

CoinosaurusCoinosaurus Posts: 9,630 ✭✭✭✭✭
Do you always have cash available waiting for the right hard-to-find coin?

Or do you more typically find the coin before you find the cash to pay for it?

To me it is not a question of just finding a coin or having enough cash around. It is finding a coin at a price I am willing to pay. The pieces cannot be separated.

With Mercury Dime Varieties it is mostly the difficulty in locating the right example and by right example I tend to mean Top Pop examples....but in some cases ANY example would be nice to locate. Some of them are very rare.

Although with some coins...the cash just isn't around these days unfortunately. image

On one project I am working on it hard to find the money and on another it's the coins.
My date set of halves have hit dates that when the coins become available I'm often out bid on them.
And on the Classic Commemorative s in AU I am now at the point that the coins just are not on the market in the grade I want for the set.

A hard-to-find coin is not "right" if the price is all wrong. In my universe, anyway...

This. At the last major show I attended, I found three (to me) expensive type coins, all of which would have been acceptable for my collection. Pricing went from to much too something I can't write on this forum, at least not in English.

One dealer priced his material so high, I think he cared for his coins more than he cared for his children.

For me I've had the cash but was afraid to jump. Now I'm justing looking for the right coin to come along regardless of price, preferrably with a CAC sticker.

Initially, it's harder to find; once found, the emphasis may move to the other side.

As a colonial coin dealer who comes across some really rare pieces a few times a year, I find the following statement fits the OP question. "The opportunity to buy the coin sometimes is rarer than the coin itself."

Not quite a full answer to the original question, but I think from a collector POV, we always find a way to pay for the coin if it is something we have been searching for and really desire owning.

    Equal.

Funds availability vary by collector as much as coin availability varies by series/grade.

Some on this site are looking for a population 1 in a grade. Some collectors are looking for a coin of population 1. In probability terms, that is the same end result. For those wanting to argue the math, don't bother....a case can be made on either side of this debate.

It depends on your perspective. There are very few coins that I both want and could realistically afford, and for those, I'm very, very picky about the right look. Thus, finding the coin is much harder than paying for it. If I were to expand the question to coins that I couldn't realistically afford (maybe I could pay for them, but it would be irresponsible to put the funds in coins vs. savings or some other more necessary endeavor) but would love to own, then the money issue creeps in. I'd love a mid-grade chain cent, but even a low-end one would be a poor use of my funds right now. I bet I could find a nice one with some looking, but there's no point in that exercise.

Many of my favorite pieces are the ones I've waited the longest to acquire. I wanted an NJ copper for a solid decade (maybe longer, actually...) before I got one that had the right look and was in my budget. But I love the coin and have no regrets that I didn't settle. The same goes for many other pieces I hold. So if I don't have a coin to spend the money on, no big deal. There's no shame in not settling for something less than the ultimate prize I'm after.

Virtually all the U.S. coins I am interested in tend to be relatively common, typically up for sale or auction several times a year or more. What makes it difficult is finding the right ratio of quality to price, for coins in a certain grade. So in this poll, I would vote pay for it. My want list could be filled within a month, if I wrote a blank check, but I have zero interest in doing that and being buried in coins at an immediate 50%+ loss.

Probably harder to find the right one. Affording it usually isn't the problem in the first place because if I couldn't afford it, I wouldn't have looked to begin with

when i got the cash then i do the looking. no cash, no coin.

I'm extremely selective and probably buy 1-2 coins per year so finding a satisfactory piece is easily the most difficult.
