POLL: Do you showcase your coin hobby on Facebook?

PrethenPrethen Posts: 3,452 ✭✭✭
I'm curious to know if any of you show off coins on Facebook. Personally, I'm a little paranoid about doing this, even if only my "friends" can see my site.

No way! The way facebook is going, everyone is going to be tracking your personal life and everything you do. I would not recommend it.

For security reasons, I do not use Facebook and would not recommend it.

I don't show my coins on FB, though I am thinking to link my blog there (which doesn't have my coins but only general info about US Numismatics).

I use it and quite like it , friends from as far back as 30 some years ago have found me there as well as many old shipmates. I have noticed a lot and i do mean a lot of coin sellers on facebook , you can open a shop there ya know, ive bought bullion with no hassles and no fees, it's no ebay but the bullion dealers are raking it in there.

Luckily, I am not paranoid nor am I high profile.
I may well use FB but I don't mess around with hobbies on there. Friends/family, yes. Hobbies, no.

Using anything makes one less secure, however understanding what issues may arise, and how one handles things like information in the first place is the key to being reasonably secure and safe.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I was showing pics and talking about them readily on FB for a brief period, but got several warning messages from friends about security. And they were correct, as you tend to say when and where you may be, or going away for a weekend, then what you have... So now, I don't keep anything but the day to day stuff in the house.

So I erased the pics and topics off my timeline, especially being careful not to talk about investment or PM type topics. Shame, I wanted to share the fun and knowledge with friends, but on FB your stuff goes far beyond an inner circle (not that I trust my inner circle hah!). I mean nothing is secure. Even here, its an open place for someone w bad intentions to snoop around for info, so I try not to give personal details. Glad to have this forum for sure!

Exactly Ron , its no more a security risk than selling on ebay or opening up shop anywhere online.Any security risks are provided soley by the user, theres intricate security levels on FB there to be used but few do and then wonder how their pics got nicked etc

I do not discuss on FB.

HOWEVER - if you friend a lot of collectors on FB, and I suspect most of us do, this information can probably be derived by someone who knows what they are doing.

They are already using FB to do bizarre things like predict who is gonna hook up w/who, w/startling accuracy.

Advertising that you collect coins on any social media is a serious security breach and just plain dumb.

Absofreaklinglutely not. While my page is not public, and is only visible to "friends", I still do not disclose anything. Its not being paranoid, its being safe.

I enjoy FB for reconnnecting with lost friends and sharing news about the family (mostly pics of my kids). Aside from that, the bulk of my FB posts are political. I enjoy the debates and especially enjoy baiting certain co-workers into political debates. It can be fun, but like anything else, you need to use common sense.

I do not discuss coins on Facebook... it is a good medium for keeping in touch with grandkids and relatives out of state...security is what you make it, and it is a personal responsibility. Cheers, RickO

I have 1 friend on FB, my daughter. So I can keep up with the grandbaby.

And listing coins on FB would be the absolute last thing I would do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do. It is done through my business page there. There is enough public info about what I do where I am not paranoid to think there will be an issue through Facebook.

I take a lot more measures on security offline, so I can feel comfortable online.
