Nice coin! Looks like an MS62 with what appears to be slight high point rub which may drop it to AU58 if the graders are feeling particularly conservative while grading your coin. In any event, I like it a lot..

I'm not even gonna guess bucause on ten submissions it would come back with five different grades. What's in a grade anyway? Someone's opinion. What DOES amaze mid that a piece like this.. A fortune in late CW era South...sat somewhere untouched and unused

Definition of a slider, I'll go MS61 even with the Obv field rub (note halo's around a few stars, flow lines aren't circular)

I voted MS-62 although it could be MS-63. It appears to have tiny surface marks that would could knock a point off the way it looks in the photo. It's nicer in a way than the one I have, which is graded MS-63, because my piece is a later die state.

I'm not really a "gold guy", but I'd WAG MS62. I like the look of it overall.

I love it and I'm jealous because it blows my example out of the water. Grade- AU-58- MS-62. Congrats on a beautiful coin. Just out of curiosity, where did you get it? BTW here is a pic of mine PCGS AU-55. imageimage

    I voted MS62.

    FWIW, here's my AU58 CAC.

thanks for all the positive comments and votes...except for the person who said "cleaned." who was that? let's get 'em! image just kidding.

i think the coin might be undergraded...which is why i decided to have a poll. here's the slab:

    image

the only thing that might be holding this coin back is that it has somewhat subdued luster. it's there...but it could be better. perhaps that's why it's graded as such. to me, it's at least au55 though. i think au50 is a little harsh for this piece.

also, thanks to those who posted their examples in the thread. all of them are very nice and good for comparison!

Agree that PCGS undergraded this coin. They may have seen something like the dull surfaces from a light cleaning or over dipping that caused them to silently net grade it down to a 50. Looks like it may be a good candidate for a gold CAC sticker.

I voted AU58...fields and hair above ear indicate wear to me (you never know by looking at photos). AU50 sure seems under graded from the photo. Nice find.

yeah, they are. i'm surprised not more were lost...and the ones that did survive were probably put away just so they wouldn't get lost.

I like it as an AU-58 with exceptional surfaces.

I bid on this one but let it go because I have it's twin in an OGH. Man, PCGS was brutal on C and D mint stuff back then. Nice coin from the pics. If you look back in the Heritage records you will see that this same coin sold for considerably more a few yers ago.
Congrats! But be careful they are contagious.

I voted AU58 for the same reasons and there are more MS62 votes than AU58 votes. I see a gold sticker opportunity for this one.

    Go get it beaned.
Likely to get gold on gold image

I see it as a high AU (58) or a potential slider.....so, keep the OGH (helps show stability) and get it beaned.

There are folks who could help you get it sent in.

I voted AU55, but I definitely think you ought to get that one beaned.
  • stevebensteveben Posts: 4,616 ✭✭✭✭✭
i know you guys might think i'm crazy cause i didn't go the bean route and i lost the OGH...but it upgraded to AU53. so, i'm happy because that helps my registry set a little bit and it's finally a small victory for me. plus the coin looks a little bigger in a pronged holder and i can see the third side now.

You removed the original pictures, so some of us have no clue what it looks like. But, good job if it upgraded I guess.

Your coin, so if you are happy, that works.
I think you lost potential resale though. Also, as I stated above, the OGH showed stability and if something was going to occur due to air/environment, etc, it would likely had already done so, or started. Now, it was cracked and re-exposed to air, etc, and reslabbed.
I used to think of things in terms of the registry, but once I started appreciating my coins for what they were, and how I saw them, I let go of taking chances just for the registry game (I still have the registry sets, and put coins in them, but I don't crack out anymore, or try to max out the registry).

Again, glad you are happy with it.
