While I'm rarely impressed by artworks that sell for big money, this is a work that I've always respected. I didn't know any of these were in private hands. There are several versions in the Munch Museum in Oslo.
I like that painting. Weren't there several versions??
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.

I went to the Munch Museum many years ago. My recollection is that there were at least three on display. I believe there is at least one more in Oslo's National Gallery.

I have needed this piece to complete my EM registry set. Once purchased I had established my position as all time EM and flipped it for 2 Picasso Blue period pieces which is my new passion. Once a collector......
Hmmm, isn't the Van Gogh purple flowers, or whatever it's called in private hands and sold for about 150 mill? A far more significant piece, absolutely, than this and not just my opinion. Also many, many Monets in private hands and most would consider far more significant (other than price) to repeat myself.

There are a few that have sold for more than the Munch outside of auctions. I believe the Pollack that David Geffen bought is still the highest price ever for a private sale.
Scratch that, a Cezanne sold to the Royal Family of Qatar at an estimated 250-300mil last year. Until then the Pollack was tops.

I can't imagine handling that thing. You know...like being the guy in charge of packing it up for shipment and stuff. I think my hands would shake too much for fear of ripping it.

Steve Wynn accidentally punctured a $139 million Picasso while showing it to guests in his office. Ouch. MJ

I really like this piece, I was first introduced to it in college in a psych class (probably like most psych classes). A few weeks ago I was discussing it in an elective class I teach called "The Art of Pharmacokinetics" using it to illustrate the anguish most students feel about applied mathematics. The students will get a kick out of the sale.
I would prefer to pay a few hundred for a nice reproduction and pick up a few nice double dimes with the balance ... and then maybe buy a small country.

I discovered that the cleaning staff accidentally punctured one of the paintings in my office and I was mortified. Oh ... yeah ... not quite worth the same as a Picasso, but the pain was still there.

I never really liked this painting... and do not understand the fascination with it. However, for those that enjoy it, fine. It does seem a lot of money for it though. Cheers, RickO

If somebody said to me here is 120 million to spend on one single item that you had to either hang on a wall or keep in a safe deposit box I would have honestly picked this piece. Iconic and mesmerizing. MJ

Edvard, could have done it in 1/2 an hour, then written a neat story about the blood red sky on the back for effect. Charged 50 francs for the work, maybe.
Art dealer friend was telling me he shipped a $2 million dollar painting to Texas a few years ago.
He's not sure why, but he decided to ship the painting in a crate seperate from the frame.
Some idiot put the tine of a forklift through the middle of the frame.
More than one way to damage a painting.

$120 mil is pretty good for that one, not nearly close to the top, but iconic to be sure

I think the $120M is nuts, but conversely, most of our spouses think what we spend on coins is nuts.

It reminds me of the old "Nancy" cartoon where Nancy asks her aunt for money to buy an elephant.
Aunt: "What would you do with an elephant?"
Nancy: "Oh, I don't want an elephant. I just want enough money to buy one."
