Honoring your word

I received an email on Monday morning from a first-time potential seller:
(these read exactly how they were sent, the seller will remain anonymous, and no the set is not on the PSA registry)
Seller: 1969 topps basketball psa graded set
hi reed per our conversation on the phone here is the info on this set, 5, 42, & 69 are graded 8.5, the following 6 cards are graded 7: 1, 2, 20, 25, 72, & 84 the 99 is graded 7oc the rest of the set are graded 8's with no qualifiers (92 cards) please advise at your earliest convenience thanks in advance
I replied Tuesday late morning with this response:
Reed: Thanks for providing the specs about your set. We can offer $3,900 for your set. Let m e know if you have any questions.
The seller calls me up about a half hour after I sent my email and tells me, "with regards to your offer, if you can make it $4,000 and pay the shipping, I'll ship the set to you tomorrow." I agreed, and we had a deal. I was to expect the set to arrive via USPS Monday morning. Wednesday morning, I get off a plane in Phoenix and this email is waiting for me:
Seller: hi reed last nite i received 2 offers i committed to you but i have to back out another dealer bought a bunch of my stuff and that had to be in the deal i am sorry but i couldn't pass up the deal once again i'm sorry
My question here is how would you respond to this situation if you were me or representing BBCE? The one thing I'm not so good at is dealing with impossible people or those who try to take advantage of a fair situation; being tactful when someone does something like this often gets my mouth in trouble. I greatly appreciate your input.

<< <i>Probably the best thing to do is nothing, and never deal with them again. Anything else might be regrettable after a while. >>
Good advice IMO.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

I agree with my distinguished colleagues. Unfortunately, not everyone sticks to their word. A good reputation is a hard thing to earn, but easy to blow.

Collecting:
Any unopened Baseball cello and rack packs and boxes from the 1970's and early 1980s.
<< <i>Really? >>
Kinda what I thought too - Reed, why are you asking a message board and not your boss about this?
I would not say a word to them and move on.
<< <i>I guess he is asking because he wants to. >>
and maybe it's a compliment. he must think someone here is sensible enough to respond appropriately.

Like Mike said, a good reputation is difficult to earn but easy to blow.
That said, I would have kept this episode private, personally, or just asked Steve what to do.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
<< <i>he must think someone here is sensible enough to respond appropriately. >>
That's wishful thinking.
Also, I wonder how long it will take the forum detectives to find out which set he is referring too?
Oh about 24 seconds.

Reed obviously values many of the folks on here, and I know some talk with him from time to time. I think it's great when Reed posts here. Even if he's asking a qusetion like this. Think about it... Your on the road all the time and your only interaction is with Steve(lol, could be worse, JK) and with seller's that want huge money for their 80's and 90's stuff.
As I've said before would love to here more about good and bad deals that occur while your out on the road. We, well most wish we had the opportunities to do what you do, and come across some of the amazing stuff you find.
Keep the post coming!

better to know now the person is a flake, then later on down the line
Or, have sex with his wife and take his dog.
You are far from being the only person ever disappointed by a deal gone bad. I suspect everybody on this board could write a narrative about who screwed who and why and how it impacted them. The bright side is this...you still have your money and didn't get ripped off. You can also duly note the seller's info and perhaps share with your associates, which in time will have this clown treated as a pariah.
So, here's da deal. Take a deep breath, go to your favorite watering hole or restaurant and treat yourself to a nice evening among friends or associates with whom you enjoy discussing nicer things in life. You gotta let go of the anger and just move on, no other way to deal with it...well, there is, but why suffer the potential consequences, just move on.
Life's a very short ride, this is merely a tiny blip on the radar scope, aggravating as it is.
Long ago and far away, I volunteered to go to Vietnam. I had "friends" in well positioned places in Saigon headquarters that were gonna get me some cushy administrative job. Well, upon arrival, I was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division in Lai Khe...THAT my friend will give you a real OMG moment !!! I had a few moments when I truly prayed, but thankfully I made it home ok...many others did not.
Compared to a sour baseball card deal, I think the latter would be considered a piece of cake.
<< <i>I get disappointed all the time by sellers offering $5 shipping. I just ding the hell out of their stars, write some nasties on message boards, and move on. >>
LOL....move on???????
That was funny Dan. Hope you are well.

Did you ever get a chance to get into Saigon and pay your pals a visit?
Also why not out them so everyone can benefit?

Agreed, or it never happened.
May be, Maybe...

Perhaps that is the motive from the beginning.

Well for one you had an agreement and the cards were supposed to be shipped and then they backed out for another offer of more money. In my eyes a deals a deal, both agreed to it and the party breaking the agreement could be taken to court and is bound by contract law (I assume some of this was done in writing). Second is this really a person you want to deal with again in the future, imo not at all as I can see them doing this every deal even when they dont have a second buyer. Its just bad business and no reason for a reputable company like BBCE to waste their time on it.
I will say again, please out the person as its only fair to all your good customers who are on this forum and that info is very useful to them.
This "Hobby" is filled with sharks and Im all for the collector making the best decision for himself.
<< <i> My question here is how would you respond to this situation if you were me or representing BBCE? >>
How? Not bringing here, that's for sure. WTF were you thinking?
Reed probably sees your daily bit*ching, least you could do is let him sound off now and then.
<< <i>LOL @ those who think that BBCE is somehow precluded from complaining on message board.

And KaKa you don't have a clue, but I see you want to fit in, so you jump on any train strolling through. At least your trying. How about you introduce yourself with what you collect, how about posting some pics/scans, how about your favorite team?? Maybe your favorite pet? I always wonder why someone joins a forum and just starts posting about negative stuff and like they no everyone. Really odd to me, but these are my feelings I'll own them...
Anyway I can almost bet you it's someone on these boards or forums that backed out on the deal. I think it's great to see the other side. Reed simply created an open ended question which creates responses.
Not bad for business it's real, it happens. Post more Reed!
