  • << <i>Uhm.... And the grades are? >>

Read back 2 or 3 post Sean, I posted them.

  • Gratz on the 8, why did you send only 4 in?

  • << <i>Gratz on the 8, why did you send only 4 in? >>

Well for a few reasons..... I just joined the collectors club or whatever it's called. I had a voucher for 15 free subs....I had some other cards I wanted to grade too (The Munsons, Jeters, and Riveras I mentioned earlier). Also the total PSA pop on this card was 8 before I subbed my 4. I didn't know if subbing 14 of the same card would effect the submission one way or the other since the total pop is so low. I don't know if that makes any sense, but it just didn't feel right sending in all 14 at once. Lastly I wanted to make 100% sure they weren't reproductions. I was only 99.9% sure before the grades popped. I didn't want to take the slim chance of 14 cards of my 15 card sub come back bogus.

Of the 10 raw ones that I have left, I think realistcally 6 or 7 of them have a legit shot at of coming back PSA 7 or better. I plan on subbing those 6 or 7 cards later in the year when I get together a 80-100 card sub to send in during a special, so we'll see how I do. I may actually have two orders of 80 cards each, so I may send another 4 with one order, and possibly 3 with another a few months apart. Not certian yet.

Just re read a few pages; plenty calling for them being fake.

Either way I like hearing success stories and glad this is working out in his favor.

    Thanks David.

To be fair, I think most people just thought it was weird that I was able to get so many in one shot, therefore questioned the authenticity of them. Others were obviously just joking around (CdsNuts), and that's ok too. After having some fun he said he thought they were real.

However there were a few members who seriously wanted me to think I was scammed just for their own amusement. I chalk this up to the fact that there are people out there who are just negative. Period. No matter what they will try to rain on your parade...no matter what that parade is for.
One member was PMing me trying to buy one at first, when I declined his offer he trashed the card on the thread. Lol.

It's funny, none of those negative members have posted since the grades popped. lol

    That was more my point.

People love to run their mouths and then they disappear.

I just like the fact this was something you were thrilled about that worked out. At the end of the day cards are supposed to be fun. Nice going.

  • << <i>Congrats on your first sub and nice to see the good attitude. It looks like those cards are all pretty nicely centered so I can only imagine there were some significant surface issues on those 3 6s and some more minor ones with the 8s. Not sure if this has already been suggested but get a single light source and do a good old tilt and turn on all the cards you wanna submit ... this will help you catch many of those veins, wrinkles, spots, bumps and scratches that bring a nicely centered card with sharp corners to its knees. >>

Thanks, I will try that. I think judging the surface is my weak spot. I want to get better at it. Corners, edges, and centering are much easier for me.

+1 for the picutre of Abby. lol.

  • more importantly, I didn't know if I had a username so long as MyDaughtersNameIsMattingly It could actually make the message board visual go all out of whack. (at least with the browser I am using) Anyone else give cred here to MyDaughtersNameIsMattingly for this ? That in itself should get near POY.
  • After much ado (about nothing)......here is the pic of the 8 i got back in the mail today

I'm quite late to the party, but find this card really interesting. Congrats to the OP on finding so many copies of his White Whale. I'd guess you could do well trading your extras to other Mattingly collectors.

I really wish someone had some more knowledge about this issue. I'd love to hear the story behind its creation and distribution.

Hey MyDaughtersNameIsMattingly, did you ask your source how he got his hands on 14 copies? Seems to me that's the logical place to start. I don't regularly read SMR, but it also seems like something that could end up in a short article in a future issue, if you were able to track it down and clear up some of the mystery.

That's because if some of the board members don't get their daily dose of insults and trolling out they might explode.

Over the years, I have tried and tried to get solid info on its creation and distribution. At shows, on line etc... No one seems to know for sure.

When I bought the cards, the guy told me he got them at an estate sale. He said he bought over 25,000 cards at this one sale ranging from the mid 70's to the early 90's. I have his email, but I am very reluctant to contact him on the matter.

I mean, what would I say to him? "Excuse me, but I bought 14 rare cards from you for pennies on the dollar.....now could you help me track down the source of the cards?"....... It would just be too weird of a conversation to have.

I don't know if I'll ever get concrete evidevce about the story of these cards. I'm going to bring a few to the national......I'll see if I can come up with anything when I'm down there.

  • << <i>Very nice centering. I'd call it a blazer!

So it got an 8? ... is it just the photo or is the border a little yellow compared, for example, to the white of the flip? Or is the border supposed to be that shade?

I see a few white specs ... and 1 or 2 black ones ... you can usually still see any surface issues if you tilt the holder under a bright light ... it's more difficult than with a raw card but you can still learn from it.

Great looking card ... Mattingly has the "i'm gonna destroy you" gaze image >>

I think the border is supposed to be that shade....they are all about the same. The white certainly isn't as bright as on the flip, but there is no yellowing either.

Thanks for all your advice bubblebath!

Why not contact him? You don't have to say that they're worth a lot, but if you really want to get to the bottom of the mystery, that seller is your best clue right now. Send him a scan, say they are unusual cards and that you're hoping he might have some more information. I'd even give him some context if possible to help him remember how he acquired them. Were they in a binder with other cards? Were they in a box with anything else? Hell, if the guy is upset because you got a deal, I'd be willing to give him one or two of the cards in exchange for more information about their origin.

But maybe that's just me. I really love the mystery and story behind oddball issues like this. I'd love to talk to someone that had an original set of 1992 Donruss DK Supers or someone that really knows where the 1990 Donruss Aqueous cards came from.

I'd like to find out about the Aqueous cards too. I don't even know if there is a Mattingly card for this set. I have heard over the years that they were not made for all players. I've never seen a Mattingly Aqueous, and to date PSA hasn't graded any of them.
