In hopes that I'll get my grades soon...how about your grade opinions on a couple coins? **TrueViews

ModCrewmanModCrewman Posts: 4,041 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm awaiting grades and TrueViews on an economy submission, that are due any day now; so to help me pass the time and get a grade opinion to help me be more patient (like that's possible) I figured I'd post a few coins for the board's opinions. These are all outside my primary collecting area, so I'm hoping to avoid any BB's. I'll post PCGS's opinions as soon as they get them to me.

** GRADES POSTED - 3/5/2012 ** TRUEVIEWS ADDED - 3/6/12
1. 1913 Type I Buffalo - PCGS MS63 - I'm a bit disappointed in this one. Looking at the TrueView, I think 63 is probably about right; I've asked Phil to tone down the color a little bit as I don't think the coin is quite as red/dark purple as the TrueView shows.
2. 1925 Lexington - PCGS MS63 - I'm okay with this one.
3. 1935-S San Diego - PCGS MS66 - I'm very happy with this one.
4. 1966 SMS Lincoln - PCGS SP67 RD - I'm okay with this one, the price jump to 68 is pretty sizeable, so knew it to be a long shot.

Photo is a tad dark, but I like the look of that San Diego. Could easily go 65+, IMO.

I think the board's grade opinions line up with my expectations. My expectations are:

    1. 1913 Type I Buffalo - MS65 shot at MS66
    2. 1925 Lexington - MS65
    3. 1935-S San Diego - MS65 possible MS64
    4. 1966 SMS Lincoln - MS68

Someone commented that they thought the Lexington looked AU, I agree the flatness of the militiaman causes me some concern, but not noting flatness on any other devices, and the relative cleanness of the rest of the coin I'm still thinking it's MS; but wouldn't be totally bindsided by an AU grade either. The Lincoln really is an exceptional coin, and if it doesn't get the 68 grade I'll have wasted my grading fees, but I felt it was attractively toned and lustrous enough that I wanted to give it a shot.

Now that the coins have been thoroughly discussed...I'm ready for my grades now. image

    Absolutely, Love that Buff!!!
I would go on a limb and say Buffalo goes 66, Lexington 64, San Diego 65 and Lincoln 67
    Best of luck.

I've never seen a toned sms cent get the (PCGS) grade of 68, but good luck anyways.

1913 buff- MS63, TAIL ON REV A LITTLE FLAT
LEX- AU53/55, FLATNESS/LUSTER (looks like there might be some corrosion)
    SD-MS64, WEAK HELMET
    CENT- 65RD, SPOTTY FIELDS

Now, the comments aren't intended to add any negativity to your coins, just an explanation of what i think will hold it back from a higher grade.

You have to remember I'm basing my opinions on pictures, but ...

    << <i>1. 1913 Type I Buffalo - PCGS MS63 - I'm a bit disappointed in this one. >>

Yea that one looks a lot better than MS-63. Given the eye appeal combined with a couple of small marks, I would have said MS-65.

    << <i>2. 1925 Lexington - PCGS MS63 - I'm okay with this one. >>

I think you got lucky on that one. I see a rub on the minute man's body and on the bellfry.

    << <i>3. 1935-S San Diego - PCGS MS66 - I'm very happy with this one. >>

I think you got lucky again. San Diego half dollars come nice, and that one has enough marks for me to be thinking MS-64 or even 63.

<< <i>4. 1966 SMS Lincoln - PCGS SP67 RD - I'm okay with this one, the price jump to 68 is pretty sizeable, so knew it to be a long shot. >>

I'd say that grade is dead on.

JMHO, but the trouble with that T1 is that PCGS graders see quite a few so they have a good, subjective idea of what the coin grades. it may look nice to us(andit is) but those graders have seen probably hundreds with the same look.

The Buff in the image looked better than 63

The Lexington did not image well and I was banking on that one looking better in hand

66 on the San Diego is okay and I thought it could 66

  • The Buff is awesome! I think you got a gift on the San Diego though especially with the marks below the g and o in San Diego on the reverse.

I've added the TrueView Photos for your reference.

Nice coins. If the Trueview photos mare more representative of the way they look in hand, the PCGS grades now make perfect sense.

Does the Buff 5c look like your photo or the Trueview in hand?

    Great looking San Diego, BTW.

<< <i>Does the Buff 5c look like your photo or the Trueview in hand? >>

I think the color is more like my photo of the Buffalo. I'm hoping Phil has some alternate shots that tone down the color a little bit; as I think it looks very AT in the photo, and it really has a very pleasant classic album toning to it.

The MAX sized photos are truly a pleasure to view, and see what the graders saw. I especially enjoyed looking at the toning on the Lexington and San Diego.

Unfortunately, (or happily that I didn't get hosed) the grade on the 1913 Buffalo makes a lot more sense looking at the Max sized photo.

I like Your pictures of the coins MUCH better than the Trueviews.

I like to see some of the luster in the pictures and the Natural color.

The nickel and the penny look Orange to Me in the Trueviews.
  • jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,527 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am in perfect agreement with all but the Buff. Way low in grade--no one grades a coin with that high of an enlargement, if they did all coins would grade 1-2 grades lower.
TMI at that size. I think you got hosed on the Buff. Probably cause Joe(crazyhounddog) has had 2 million of them graded. lol
    Nice group of coins regardless.
