That's a nice-looking piece! I can't help with the identification, but I'm sure you are trying to verify its composition. If it's sterling, I'd be tempted to keep a piece like that.

More details? Size, weight, can you show it with a known object for scale?

My WAG is that it's a sterling sugar caddy. My first impression is that it is middle-eastern based on the design and particularly the rim. But the "97" on the bottom certainly looks more 20th century European or American. The metal work is called "repousse" and/or chasing.

Google repousse sterling caddy and you should find several similar pieces.

Recent eBay closes show similar pieces aren't bringing huge dollars. Still for melt it's pretty neat. And if it's found to be a rare maker or older than my guess, then it could certainly be worth more. Nice find.

It looks like what is called a 'salt'....and was used to contain salt on the table before 'shakers' came on the scene. They are usually accompanied by small spoons.. I cannot judge the size from the picture, but if it is small, it is a 'salt'.

That's what I was thinking also. It's not a known Hallmark.

  • i figured the 97 stood for the year such as 1897,1797,or so on it is maybe a inch and half tall wt. 26.1 dwt.
